Fighting Childhood Cancer
I see children fight cancer day in and day out, as a pediatric oncology nurse. I picked this book up one day at the book store because of the pictures. However, once getting it home and reading it...it depicts a very realistic look into childhood cancer. It is currently on my bookshelf, however, I have read and reread it many times.

This book ROCKS!
I am one of Eli Kahn's sister's best friends, and as someone who carpooled with the Kahns' every day for three years straight, I got to find out just what it was like to go through. Nowadays, when I go over the Kahns' house, Eli has no signs of anything happening to him - and he always beats me at Nintendo 64!

A very nice book to read
I am friends with Eli Kahn and his sister, and ever since kindergarten, I have liked Eli and have experienced what this happens. I remember going to his house in the morning and seeing Eli. It made me worried what would happen to him. Now, just seven years later, I sometimes go over their house, and Eli's just a normal eight-year-old. This book is very touching, and it's a good one too.

Dr. Tom Amberry Is Also The Doctor Of Free Throws
Dr. Tom Amberry has written one of the best books on the psychological and physical mechanics analysis of basketball free throw shooting. Unlike some instructors he doesn't over-intellectualize the free throw shot: which creates the impairment of "analysis paralysis".
He was in his seventies when he originally sank 2,750 consecutive free throws. Considering the fact that this was achieved at such an advanced age this has to be rated as one of the greatest athletic feats of all time.
I personally know Tom Amberry and I must confess to you that his story has greatly inspired me. I perform my own basketball shooting exhibition shows and Tom's sagely shooting advice has improved my own shooting skills.

Helps you
Read this book if you want your accuracy improved on shooting at the free throw line.
It helps you go through the steps very carefully. It's easy to understand. Just practice everyday and concentrate. I think Shaquille O'Neal needs to read this book because he needs to practice on his free throws; every time I see him shoot a free throw he always misses. This nonfiction book is full of good advice for anyone at any level who wants to increase his or her free throw percentage.

A must have
No matter what your skill level from beginner to pro, this book will help you to be a better free throw shooter. When you gain confidence in your free throws you gain confidence in your game. A must have book for youth coaches trying to teach fundamentals. This book is probably the best book you can ever buy for improving your shooting.

quirky stories
I really, really liked this book. Is it great literature? No, but it's one heck of a fast read and hard to put down. As a rule, I'm not crazy about the short story category but I found this one addicting. I found myself wishing I could meet some of the characters.

A Little Book With A Lot Of Meaning
Abigal Thomas' GETTING OVER TOM is truely a delightful read. Full of short stories that are sure to make you smile, this book is a real winner when it comes to portraying life's many sides. Including everything from remembering your first kiss, your best friend from school, dealing with tough times, and even middle age, there is sure to be a story in there somewhere that will leave you touched. Thomas' writing style is like no others with her unique and quirky look on the world, making this book worth the while, and leaving you wanting more.

thomas is a magical writer
Everything she writes has a sense of truth, and great humor and/or sadness. her vision is refreshing and painful at the same time.

The Guide to Classic Recorded Jazz
Published in Paperback by University of Iowa Press (1995)
Author: Tom Piazza
Amazon base price: $24.95
Used price: $6.99
Average review score:

Great guide for jazz beginners
I bought this book three years ago, and I still go back to it regularly. When I first read it, I owned half a dozen, or fewer, jazz albums. My collection has swelled since then, and most of the LPs and CDs I've picked up were recommendations from this book. I have not been disappointed yet.

Piazza's knowledge of jazz recordings, together with his clear, direct, and enthusiastic writing style, make this a joy to flip through. I can say I've truly discovered some outstanding music thanks to him and his book.

I concur: it's the best
Tom Piazza is both a jazz pianist and a writer, giving him a rare combination of insight and ability to express it. Musicians know that many renowned critics don't really know what they're talking about--if you don't play, you (usually) don't know. Piazza knows.

His book is divided into halves. The first half covers the recordings of the great jazz ensembles from dixieland through the 1960s avant-garde. (There's no coverage of 1970s jazz-fusion, the 1980s young lions, or later, which are too recent to be "classic.") The second half covers the recordings of the most important jazz soloists on each instrument over the same period. An advantage of this structure is that it gives an overall sense of history in a way that books like the All-Music Guide, organized alphabetically by artist, can't.

Piazza does have an ideological leaning. He is part of the current Wynton Marsalis/Stanley Crouch camp, which feels that much recent jazz should not be called jazz at all, because it is not based on the blues. The free jazz of the 1960s and the jazz-fusion of the 1970s are without merit to this camp, and this is probably why Piazza does not reach into the 1970s. (He does say, of 1960s free jazz, that "people who like this sort of thing like the following albums.") It's a mark of Piazza's excellence that while I do not belong to this camp, I still think his guide is the best for the period it covers. Fans of free jazz and jazz-fusion will want other books to supplement Piazza's guide, but Piazza's book should be the first purchase for your jazz library.

Best guide to Jazz music
I really clicked with this author's personal selections of the best artists in the wide world of jazz music. He truly cares about this music and shares his feelings. The music of the 50s and 60s is rightfully highlighted as a highpoint in the development of jazz music.

The advice in this book makes so much sense! It is holistic and intuitive. The writer clearly understands that health and well-being is more than just food. The book is an outstanding collection of information. And I like the recipes. Most of them are quick and easy. I recommend it!

Exceptional book
This is an exceptional book.

It's rare to find an author in the nutrition field
that looks at all sides of the debate
and offers an easily followable, non dogmatic diet.

The book, and the school run by the author - Institute for Integrative Nutrition - are ground-breaking.

Joshua is truly ahead of his time, and I highly recommend this book. The principles and recipes in it have really helped me balance out my blood sugar and have more consistent energy throughout the day.

As a certified health counselor, I have given it to clients and used it as a blueprint for my health program, all with consistant success. Where have all the Tom McCall's gone??
This biography of the modern day father of Oregon, makes this native long for days past. For days when Oregon was a leader on the national politcla/cultural/social scene.

Walth does an excellent job detailing not only the political successes of one of Oregon's greatest politicians, but also of the man's personal shortcomings.

I am not certain how much appeal this book will have to non-Oregonian's or people who are unfamiliar with the Pacific Northwest, but I feel that it should be required reading by all students of political science attending Oregon universities.

Our state legislators who are constantly invoking McCall's name and legacy to advance their own political gains, would do well to read this biography. Our elected officials of today pale in comparison to the individual giants of years past.

Oregonians Explained
I am a Native Oregonian living on the east coast and this book helped me understand why I feel like a fish out of water in the midst of uncontrolled suburban sprawl, minimal recycling facilities, and chemical pollution violations are repeatedly ignored by local politicians.
Mr. Walth's book was exciting to read. I recommend it to anyone seeking to understand Oregonians and why we're so proud of the place we call home. Brent Walth tells the story of how Tom McCall gave us that pride.

biography equally about Oregon as it is about McCall
Deserves a place in every hotel and bed/breakfast gift shop across Oregon -- for visitors to the Pacific Northwest to pick up. Walth tells the McCall story and in doing so coaches the reader about the things Oregonians are the most passionate about. Most of us cannot travel to another state and name their most famous governor -- yet McCall's legacy is often mentioned by domestic and international visitors to Oregon.

A great resource on the gaff rig
Tom Cunliffe has written a wonderful book, and I always have a hard time deciding if this is the ultimate resource on the gaff rig, or if another author's]Handbook should take that honor. I have both, and find them very valuable. If you are restoring or building a boat with a gaff rig, you probably will want to get both too. The review I wrote for my boat building site... said:

"At first glance, there seems to be a lot of historical information on boats using the gaff rig, but what Cunliffe has done is describe nearly every imaginable type of craft using a gaff rig. Then, selecting the gaff cutter, he continues on to describe the rigging details of every aspect of that sail plan. Because the cutter has every rigging feature the other types have, you immediately identify those rigging features you need to consider. Its a unique and very readable way of introducing details that otherwise might be dry and frankly, boring, if included again and again in every chapter on a specific type of boat. Cunliffe also includes other information: sail trimming and sailing tips, etc., all with a dose of humor."

At the time I wrote that, Hand Reef and Steer was between printings. I'm pleased to see that it is again available. Highly recommended!

Hand, Reef, and Steer
A great resource for the person who owns or dreams about owning a Gaff Rigg Cutter. The book details rigging and nomenclature, and charectoristics of sailing gaff riggs.

Excellent reference for the self reliance sailor
One of the best among the few books available in the subject. Strongly recommended for the yacht builder who is considering gaff rigged yachts for their production.

Together with Gaff Rig by John Leather is a must in your reference library.

Clear and simple to follow and a helpful guide to convert the exsisting bermudian rig to a Gaff rig.

I See by Your Outfit: Historic Cowboy Gear of the Northern Plains

It aint Hollywood
This is the real MCoy. The authors appear to know their subect well and have done their homework. I thank you for that because this is my first read on the subject of real cowboy clothing and I wanted facts. The detail was very good and in some cases too good as in the section on horse bits. What cowboys acually wore and why is fascinating. Don't get me wrong I enjoy the Hollywood costumes but it's nice to know the real story and this is it.

A remarkable reference book
A friend shoved this book in front of me during research for a historical novel, and I found it fascinating! It is a comprehensive guide to the real garb and tack of real cowboys in a real frontier, not a Technicolored Hollywood wardrober's fantasy. I found it expertly written and illustrated, detailed and enormously helpful. This isn't the kind of amateur historical pap you see so often in this category, it's the Real McCoy. Anyone who wants or needs to know how cowboys and frontiersmen dressed needs to pick up "I See By Your Outfit."

Good cowboy stuff.
I thought this book would be about what you can tell about people from what kind of truck they drive. But it turned out to be a very good reference on historic Western garb.
