Earth. They were fresh voices who found spiritual
rebirth through nature and were in the forefront of
those questioning the prevalent doctrine of consummerism.
I would heartily recommend this well written book.

Wow- what a book. This book sheds new light on a topic I feel has already been covered. Phillips' personal interviews are fantastic. I would love to have Phillips for a professor, wait- I do. Phillips is the man, and so is his book. If you are reading this Dr. Phillips can I have a 4.0? You know who I am!

Finally, a scholar has dug through the pop culture mud of the Beats to bedrock below: They weren't just citified tea-heads as Life magazine in the Fifties (and too many academics since) would have us believe. These writers were deeply tuned into the natural world and drew upon it for inspiration and some of their best writing--even the seemingly most urban of the lot--Kerouac. Case and point: Kerouac's "greening" in "Dharma Bums." Phillips' discussion of this novel is especially astute; and it sent me digging for my old copy. Similarly, Phillips' treatment of the Beats and Buddhism (Snyder in particular) is also refreshingly clear and original--not an easy thing to do. Phillips' research, including interviews with McClure, Welch and Snyder, is thorough and convincing. Moreover, his prose is sharp and unencumbered with trendy jargon. I predict Beat scholars will reconsider certain assumptions upon reading this book--and Beat fans will find this to be a unique and excellent addition to the ever-growing Beat canon.

I truly enjoyed this book as it unfolds a story that deals with what one would think is the "afterlife". This is centered around a garden that has been maintained throughout the life time of the author. From one flower comes either a scent or a color that represents something that has occurred in life, either good or bad. There are bushes and trees that have been chosen to show how a behavoir, belief, word, act or deed was dealt with while on earth.

The most signficant memory I have is that we have been given everything we need to be successful here on earth. It is how we chose to use each gift that we have which determines our "afterlife". God gave us our "will" and by doing so we have "choices". We need to be conscience everyday of the choices we make. ...because it may bring up a foul smelling flower or discolored bush or tree. Reading this book allowed me to reflect on my "limitations" and see why I must do all I can to do His "will".

I purchased this book because of the beautiful, eye appealing cover. The purchase was made two week after a life threatening heart infection. This book along with that experience has help me realize what is really important in this life. It was used of God to heal old wounds and renew my relationship with Him. Reading this book will be one of the most memorable times in my spiritual walk. It is wonderful. A must to read. njk.

This book is very inspirational. It points out that God gave us our 'self' and we must take care of our 'self' because some day we are going to be givng our self back to Him. And every decision we make, even the smallest, most unimportant decision makes up what and who we become and is what we present to God when he calls us home. This book is very well written and easy to read, but really makes the reader stop and think. It is a very powerful, thought provoking book and one that I will be reading over and over again.

I am moved by every book in the "Journals of Corrie Belle Hollister" series, but Land of the Brave and the Free has influenced me most. Displaying God's faithfulness to one life through a sequence of dramatic and suspenseful events, this book accurately describes the struggles and questions that a young person has about life. The reader's interest is stirred by the Civil War setting and by Corrie's placement in major events in U.S. history, such as the Civil War's final battle and the funeral procession of President Lincoln. My favorite aspect of this book is Corrie's growing relationship with God and, in these portions, I learned a lot about myself. God's goodness and beautiful gifts bring the book to a close with an ending that brings tears. Overall, Land of the Brave and the Free is one of the best installments in "Journals of Corrie Belle Hollister" series and a must-read for every Christian fiction enthusiast.

This book changed my whole perspective on dating, marriage andlife as a single person. It helped me finally become secure in beingsingle, even if for life. God definitely used this book to shape who I am today. The writing style is great and you'll find you can't put the book down. The books before this one compliment it and I would suggest reading the first 6 books in the series before it. It will be well worth your time!

After a tragedy in the novel before this seventh book in the series, Corrie finds herself awakened with more questions without answers than she can figure out by herself. She must rely on her faith in God to help sort through the questions to her life. Is she to stay at the convent, is she to continue writing to help those she believes are right? She overcomes some heartaches and misunderstandings by visiting the home of her youth in New York, emerging on the other side with California beckoning to her and a certain someone on her mind. God reveals to her what is to become of her life! Though not as exciting as some of the latter novels, this book certainly keeps me reading! Very good!

Pella and Phillips never seem to disappoint with this series. I recommend all seven books with five stars.

I found this book to be a wonderful continuance of the Russian saga. At first I was upset about Princess Katrina, but it really turns out for the best. Anna and Sergei raise Mariana to have the wonderful blended qualities of them both. Dimitri leaves to find the measure of the man he never would own up to be. And we leave them again, in a humble cottage in Katyk, right where we started.

I have always loved Russian history, and I found these books an excelent way to learn more about it. After reading the series, I got the opportunity to visit St.Petersburg, Russia where much of the story takes place, and I was amazed at how accurate the books had been in history and setting. The books are so well written that you feel like you are part of the story. The characters seem like your best friend and you never want to put the books down. I found myself reading in eery spare moment I had and before I read these books, I hated to read. These are great books for teenagers to read because of their clean content. You will not be disappointed.

Once you finish reading this story of a set of young adults coming of age, you will immediately want to start on book two. You see, this is what happened to me, except I didn't know about books three through seven until I was well into book #2! I finally finished the series earlier this year and consider it to be a major accomplishment (and a very fulfilling one). I must say that after book seven I was disappointed that I will no longer be hearing of Anna Buerenin and the illustrious characters that touched her life.

This series is typically categorized by bookstores as "religious fiction". I will say that there is an underlying message about God (after all religion plays a huge part of Russian history) but it was simply woven into the story subtly and relevantly. I have read other Pella books and found this to be the case with them as well.

This book was the start of my infatuation with historical fiction and I am thankful for it. I do recommend all seven in the series - read them, although it may take a while!

When I came across this book in my church's library a week ago, I wasn't too thrilled with it. Somehow, I ended up checking it out, but my expectations were not high. I expected either a boring, dry chronicle of Russia's history or a sappy, overdone love story. Well...a week later I can assure you that that is definitely not the case. "The Crown and the Crucible", set in the 1870's, is essentially the story of two families who represent the two basic types of people that were in Russia. There is Anna Burenin, a 17-year-old whose family has always been peasants, and there is 15-year-old Katrina Fedorcenko, whose life has been that of a high-ranking Russian aristocrat. Anna and Katrina's lives become intertwined when Anna goes to the Fedorcenko household to be a kitchen servant, and by a remarkable sequence of events, becomes Katrina's personal maid. But other things are happening as well in this novel. We see how unstable life was in Russia, and read how even Viktor Fedorcenko (Katrina's father) had to guard what he said around the tsar, whom he had known since childhood. Segei Fedorcenko, Katrina's brother, also has problem. It seems that he and Anna are beginning to fall in love...and how could ever be easy since he is an aristocrat and she is a maid? And the brutal war in Turkey over Russian territory only intensify his not-so-loyal thoughts toward the government. "The Crown and the Crucible" is a magnificently written story that expertly blends history with the lives of people. The characters themselves are wonderful, and I loved seeing the changes and growth in all of them...most notably Anna's Christian influence on Katrina. There is no character who you do not like and begin to know "personally" and nothing fake about the characterization. There are few books that are so well-written, historically accurate, and filled with characters you can't forget. I'm certainly glad I came across this book! And, of course, I desperately need the sequel now...

I am a fan of Michael Phillips and his talent for taking historical facts and weaving faith building stories around them. He had done another wonder with this story of WWII and I have loaned my copy out several times.

A first step in the journey of a deeper understanding of the Father's love.

A must "read" for those who enjoy historical fiction from a Godly perspective.

I read this series a couple of years ago and I absolutely loved it - my husband was fascinated as well and he usually doesn't read fiction at all. It is fascinating how the author combines history, fiction and christian values. Myself I was deeply touched and moved by the different characters - I lived right with them. Since reading these books roses are even more special to me. After finishing one book I couldn't wait to start with the next one!

In two weeks I have read books 2,3 & 4 of the Heathersleigh series. I am purchasing #1 to read. I got so involved in the characters of the series. The thing which impressed me was that, in the process of reading them, I began to be aware of people in my life - and myself - who suffered the same spiritual afflictions as the Rutherfords and their friends; and more painfully so, was brought to a point of reassessing myself and my motives in life. I would think "how could amanda be like that" and a gentle nudging of the spirit would remind me that I, too, have allowed such pettiness in my life.. Not only entertaining and full of historial and geographical knowledge, but full of spiritual awakening.

Out of all of Michael Phillips' books, this one is my favorite! I haven't been able to put it down because it is so fasinating and captivating! If you want an excellently written book that has explicit research, this book is for you. The characters are interesting and very real, whether it is Catharine and George exploring Heathersleigh Hall, the McFees visiting, or Amanda with her seemingly endless problems. I studied World War I in school this year and all the events that happened previously are in this book, which makes the book very interesting for me as well. There is nothing in this book I did not like! Read it yourself!

This book is one of the most exciting and gripping books I've ever read! Amanda and her family are very real characters in very real situations. Michael Phillips has done a fantastic job with this series. I can't wait to read the next one! If you haven't read this series, I really recommend it. It will change you and your outlook on life. It has real characters, real plots, and a history lesson too!

The book is what it seems--a commonsense introduction to everyday business practice in a lovely little edition with a nice price--but for one thing. The authors are not what you might expect from this publisher, people interested in higher consciousness (for lack of a better term), but perfectly ordinary capitalist apologists of the same sort the business schools (and I am a graduate of one!) turn out every day. On the west coast even the bankers mouth a few bland whole-earth type new-ageisms here and there, I suppose; enough to get published by Shambhala, anyway. Buy it for business advice only and save your soul elsewhere, if you have one left to save after you're done worshipping the author's god, Mammon.

A refreshing restoration of faith that you CAN make money without compromising your ethics. An excellent read that you will refer to again and again.

I purchased this book in 1987 just before starting my business. "Honest Business" affirmed every belief I had about how business should and could be practiced. Even concepts such as a business' responsibility to the community it conducts business in is discussed in depth. "Honest Business" gave me the courage and the steps for conducting business without foresaking my personal principles, morals, and objective. Even today this book is my constant companion; my business bible.

It is the mark of an outstanding book that in today's postmodern culture, a book can grip both the reader's attention and imagination until the very last word. Mike Yon's prose shows the talent of a budding writer with vast potential. His book offers the layman a unique opportunity to understand the mentallity and lifestyle of an actual Special Forces soldier. Mike Yon lends true insight with what is probably the first contemporary objective account of the Special Forces Qualification Course and the larger than life figures that made it and Special Forces the one of a kind elite unit that it was and still is today. This is definitely an excellent read and Mike Yon is a writer to keep an eye on.

I didn't use to read a lot, I was surfing the net when I heard of this book. I got it shipped to Sweden from the nice guys at AppliePie, by e-mailing (!) them.

Seeing the fun and joy of the beginning of his life is like looking at my own at a certain age, you become one with the book. The very good descriptive way that he (Mike Yon of course) tells you his life, is amazing. The feelings coming through reading this book is tough, I had to lay the book down for a week.

The hell he went through after his first 7 years was amazing, the whole book is amazing if you ask me.

The book gives you faith, it makes you wanna fight. Parts of my life has been hard. I've had times when I thought seriously about suicide (planing it and all), then I thought it was weak and that I was a fighter so way would I do it? But then I was bouncing between those options becuz of the question "why live?". Now I can truthfully say that I won't help death dealing with me. This book gave me faith, strength and something that I really need and needed, a big brother. The brother I never had. Someone to look upto. Someone you in a way you wanna become, but in the end you don't. You realize the pain that is everywhere, in your life, and his life. Why try to get his when you can change yours? Lot's of questions like this came up but more about confidence. Now I can say "I won't give up!" "I will never give up, I will make it!". That is something I couldn't do before.

I think that everybody either needs help or some kinda encouragement. In my case encouragment. This book won't tell you you're the best and that he is a super-man-invincible-green-beret rather it will make you stand up and see how horrible life can be, and at the same time there is a away out. I guess it's not the same thing as making Special Forces training and it's not telling you what todo, it's showing you that you can make a good thing out of bad experience. That's my point of view.

A review can't justify this book, it will teach you, make you grow up, make you human, learn you not to give up. and a lot more.
