A Blue Print for Integrated Marketing
Today's noisy media landscape has created an "attention economy" placing unique pressures on marketing budgets, and a return to customer relationship management. Joe Phelps' "Pyramids are Tombs" reminds us that true CRM starts with client focused work flow practices, and the flexible and scalable power of self-directed teams. "Pyramids are Tombs" is not just one man's vision of how to run a marketing and communications agency, it's a sneak peak at the "blue print" for integrated marketing.

A Must Read
This is a MUST READ for any business leader serious about competing for the best of employees and the best of customers, for the long term. Joe Phelp's concept of "self-managed, client-based teams in a full feedback environment" is applicable to virtually every company aspiring to be great. Done the way Joe suggests in this compelling book, it can be powerfully effective both in creating the kind of organization you want to run, with the people you want working at their best, and in attracting and keeping the kind of customers you want--to everybody's benefit.

An agency IMC roadmap
Joe Phelps, founder and president of The Phelps Group, writes about an agency management system that proves clients can benefit from having one agency do all their customer relationship building communication. Many clients say it is impossible for one agency to be excellent in all MC areas. This is true, but what is overlooked is that when multiple brand messages are truly integrated, the produced synergy nine times out of ten will have greater impact than a collection of "great" but unrealted brand messages. This book explains how an agency can truly integrated brand messages.

The only thing I don't understand is why Joe is giving his secret away. This book is sure to create more competition for The Phelps Group as competitors learn how to better satisfy their clients.

A full life
The Collected Stories of Colette by Sidonie-Gabrielle Colette, ed., and with an introduction by, Robert Phelps. Highly recommended.

According to the introduction, this collection represents 100 stories taken from a dozen volumes published during Colette's lifetime. They are categorised as "Early Stories," Backstage at the Music Hall," "Varieties of Human Nature," and "Love." Some, like the Clouk/Chéri stories, appear to be fiction, while many, like "The Rainy Moon" and "Bella-Vista," seem to be taken straight from Colette's varied life and acquaintances.

Whether writing fiction or chronicling fact, whether writing in the third-person omniscient or in the first person, Colette herself is always a character-rarely as an influencer, that is, one whose actions or choices drive the plot. Colette's preferred role is as observer-and it is one for which she is well suited.

An inveterate sensualist and a former music-hall performer, Colette integrates her characters (real and fictional) with everything around them-their clothes (costumes), their abodes, dressing rooms, and haunts (sets), and their neighborhoods and towns (theatres). Much of Colette's writing, no matter how mundane the surface subject, is about art-the art of living and, notably, the art of loving. In "My Goddaughter," the subject tells her godmother how she injured herself with scissors and a curling iron and recounts her mother's reaction. "She said that I had ruined her daughter for her! She said, 'What have you done with my beautiful hair which I tended so patiently? . . . And that cheek, who gave you permission to spoil it! . . . I've taken years, I've spent my days and nights, trembling over this masterpiece. . . ."

Colette is attuned to everything, every sense, every nuance. "A faint fragrance did indeed bring to my nostrils the memory of various scents which are at their strongest in autumn." ("Gibriche") ". . . set in a bracelet, which slithered between her fingers like a cold and supple snake." ("The Bracelet") " . . . the supper of rare fruits, an[d]of ice water sparkling in the thin glasses, as intoxicating as champagne . . ." ("Florie") "Peroxided hair, light-colored eyes, white teeth, something about her of an appetizing but slightly vulgar young washerwoman." ("Gitanette")

Colette does not pretend to be an objective observer of human behaviour; she does not hesitate to express to the reader her weariness with certain individuals or situations, and her stories of her vain, pretentious, overbearing friend Valentine reveal her jaded and waning affection. She knows this woman so well that she sees her almost as Valentine sees herself-a drama queen acting out stories, roles, and games without depth of feeling for them. "What Must We Look Like?" becomes Valentine's driving philosophy, to which Colette responds with "a mild, a kindly pity." In "The Hard Worker," Colette says, "I can see she does not hate him, but I cannot see she loves him either." What Colette sees-and does not see-is to be respected.

Some stories, such as "The Sick Child," are vivid and imaginative and reveal Colette's amazing ability to think and dream like a gifted child. "The Advice," with its mundane beginning and premise and twisted, horrifying ending would enhance any collection of gothic or mystery tales. Other stories, like "Gibriche," several of the other music-hall stories, and "Bella-Vista," tackle topics that even today remain controversial. "Bella-Vista," in which Colette's moods seem to wane with every familiarity achieved with her hostesses, offers an ending that is heavily foreshadowed throughout but is surprising and gruesome nonetheless.

Most of the stories, whether fiction or nonfiction, seem to come from life in one way or another. The quantity of stories and the quality of the collection reveal the incredible scope of experience of Colette, the dry, often weary yet obsessive observer, interpreter, and chronicler of human nature. As Judith Thurman says in her introduction to Colette's work, The Pure and the Impure, "This great ode to emptiness was written by a woman who felt full." As well she should.

If you love Colette, these are absolute gems
Ok. You've read the Claudine novels, and Cheri and the Return of Cheri. Now what? There are other novels (The Vagabond, Gigi, My Mother's House) but there are these short stories that are "must-reads."

Colette was one of France's most distinguished writers. Though not a writer of massive books like Victor Hugo or Proust, or of psychological novels like Zola or Flaubert, she caught that French essence of individuality and quirkiness and the golden age of La Belle Epoque before World War One changed France forever. Her books are pure joy as are these short stories. If you have NOT read Colette, you are in for a treat. (And don't neglect Claudine or Cheri. )

Perfect Intro to a forgotten female author's best work
If you're looking for a refreshing deviation from the mean of women writers, then Colette is it. Her stories offer a pleasurable clearing of the literary palate.

A vividly told, absolutely candid story
John Mantle ran his own community newspaper, the "Fort Mill Times". He was at the top of his game, as well as a successful businessman, avid motorcyclist, and pilot. Then he was felled by a catastrophic stoke and in the flash of a second nearly died, but survived paralyzed and unable to speak. He was dependent on his wife for every aspect of life from basic hygiene to exercise. Cyclops Awakes is the story of John's tremendous struggle to come back from such a devastating health crisis, and his search for sanity on the hospital stroke floor. Here also is the story of small-town journalism and the mindset of a conservative South Carolina community that rallied around its opinionated, liberal publisher -- a community that simply refused to let him curl up and die. Cyclops Awakes is a vividly told, absolutely candid story of the human condition and highly recommended for anyone attempting to beat the odds of a major stroke or other quality-of-life injury.

CYCLOPS AWAKES: It's Deja Vu a for a fellow survivor.
It was deja vu all over again! Reading this book grabbed me, mind and body, lifted me out of my motorized chair and put me back, nine years ago, in the hospital emergency room. John Mantle's vivid description of his experiences as a stroke survivor are so true they made me cry, they made me laugh and they made me take heart as well. As a fellow "stroker" I had similar experiences, and I truly appreciate his struggle and his dignity. Although I have read many books on the subject I found this one fresh, informative, interesting and readable. His writing style, as well as his living style, is truly inspiring. I recommend the book highly.

Back from the abyss
John Mantle is the perfect individual to write about having a stroke and recovering from this catastrophic event. As a professional journalist and publisher, he knows the difference between fact and feeling - and has a clear sense of what is dramatic and readable. He is also honest and willing to admit his own foibles and character defects, which gives his tale a real human touch. Cyclops Awakes is as exciting to read as a thriller. I've never known anyone who had a stroke and lived to tell about it; I feel that now I have a view from the inside. The book is a real tribute to stroke victims and their caregivers.

From the Author
I have treated over 15,000 addictive patients with the program in this book. After 15 years the book is still as valulable as the day it was published by Little, Brown, INC. I created the qustionaire and score sheet to help interested people to learn about Genetic Addictiveness and to determine if they indeed are addictive. The self-treatment program was drawn from standard Medicine and Holistic Medicine over many years in my practice. This plan enabled me to get sober and become physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually free! It works much better than any other method I have ever seen. This program is approximately 60% to 70% successful "long term"---far beyond the 3% to 10% of in-patient treatament centers. It is a self-motivated plan with strong support from Mega-Doses of Vitamin and mineral and herbal supplements, as well as many support activities. I am available for consultation by phone or mail (below) or E-mail KayleeK@micron.net

the best arsenal against addiction ever been
the outstanding book here is a must for every person who is addicted to:caffeine, nicotine, alcohol, sugar, marijuana, antidepresants, sleeping ppills, and much more. this book is dealing with a true self expirience alcohol addict that beat it with her wisdom as a m.d. who also backed it up with orthomolecular-nutrition method that described in details in this book in every specific addiction you may have. the psycological aspects of the addiction is also described very wisely in this book, and the book is written in a very easy to follow and in organised way. i must add that from my expirience i can tell you (the reader)that i treated alcohol, caffeine, nicotine, sugar, and sleeping pills in almost exactly the same way as the author of this book did. this book is very relevant in his knoledge and strategies, and practically, i do recommand it with all my heart to every addict, physician, and the lay person.the only addiction that this book didn't help is the addiction to that book. buy this book today!.

I found the secret to my emotional roller coaster, WOW!
Dr. Phelps makes such a brilliant and provocative case for the biochemistry of addiction. You either have the "bad" genes or you don't. It removes the stigma of alcoholism etc. and brings the issue down to understanding your biochemistry and managing it appropriately. Although I don't smoke, drink or use drugs, I discovered through the questionnaire that I am a High Addictor (based on family patterns of addiction). Sure enough, when I removed seemingly harmless foods from my diet, (sugar, white rice, white flour, caffeine), my focus sharpened dramatically, I lost over 15 pounds, and my emotional mood swings stopped. I managed to maintain this "eatting program" for over a year. Regrettably, I fell back during the Holidays and have yet to fully re-establish the discipline that made me feel so MUCH BETTER! You'll be glad you read this book, and like me you will recommend it to countless people. A companion book that has a similar content, though for weight loss is Mastering the Zone by Barry Sears, Ph. D. Good luck! Linda Schiller-Hanna

My Favorite Stories!
I love this book. Ever since a family friend gave it to me several years ago, I often go back and read the stories over and over again because they are so enchanting. For once, the female characters balance out with the usual "heroic" male counterparts; No damsels in distress or cunning and villainous old hags here. The Maid of the North is not, however, preachy or boring in its feminism, but it subtley sends the message out to girls that females in folktales can be just as intelligent, fun and resourceful as the males. These engaging stories are perfect for readers of any age.

Really Great
I got this book as a little girl, along with another collection "Tatterhood", written and edited by the same people (I believe). This one stuck in my mind as being the most entertaining, although both were good.

The unique, although sparse, illustrations are very interesting and wonderful, not like any other drawings in children's book. Unlike "Tatterhood", the fact that these stories were about young girls really drew me, and was quite exciting. For parents with little girls interested in legends, fantasy, and faraway places, I'd definitely recommend buying this for your children and reading it aloud.

Fairy Tales for Young Girls
Phelps created two collections of tales featuring strong women to show that not all female heroines in folklore are passive victims of circumstance. This book was originally published in 1981 to answer the feminist attack against fairy tales that appeared in the 1970s. This collection pulls stories from several cultures and will be great for reading at bedtime. Included in the 21 tales are East of the Sun and West of the Moon, Duffy and the Devil, and The Old Woman and the Rice Cakes (from Japan). The tales are interesting enough to keep the attention of both adults and children. I also recommend Phelps' other collection, "Tatterhood."

A simple guide to birth control
I was searching for a book which will help me to choose a proper birth control method. I was frustrated when I searched the internet because I could not get the answers to my questions.
I'm happy that I bought this book. In 1 hour I learned more about birth control than all the sex education classes taught me. I would highly recommend this book to any women who is having sex and does not want to get pregnant.

Great for Answering Questions on Sex and Birth Control
This book has everything we need to know about the different methods of birth control to statistics on unplanned pregnancies. It is great and I highly recommened it to anyone who is sexually active.

A practical, "reader friendly" guide for both sexes
Accessibly written by Kamal K. Dutta, M.D. (a member of the Diplomate American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology), A Simple Guide To Birth Control is an informative, practical, "reader friendly" guide for both sexes about the varieties of available birth control methods, including pills, condoms, spermicides, the NuvaRing, transdermal contraception, contraceptive implants, injectable contraceptives, sterilization, emergency contraceptive pills, and fertility awareness methods. Other than the pregnancy-terminating effects of emergency contraceptive pills, abortion in general is not covered in A Simple Guide To Birth Control. Examining the effectiveness of various methods in both preventing unwanted pregnancy and halting the transmission of sexual transmitted diseases (STDs), A Simple Guide To Birth Control is a superbly presented, easy-to-understand resource which very strongly recommended for anyone who is (or intends to be) sexually active.

fascinating
I recently visited Charleston and took the Civil War Walk with Mr. Phelps' company. During the tour the guide, Charles Hunt, enlightened me that Charleston had been severely bombarded throughout the war. I have studied the war extensively yet never knew of the bombardment of Charleston. After the tour I purchased this book and it was a fascinating read, detailing every aspect of this little known event. If you are going to visit Charleston you should read this book and augment the volume by taking the tour as well!

Outstanding book!
This book is written by an author who is well-versed in Charleston history, yet it is written from a down-to-earth point of view. It is an excellent resource on a subject that has never really been expounded previously. Most people know Charleston only because of Fort Sumter, but this book takes you deep into the Civil War giving one a sense of what really happened in this city during the War. This is an easy-to-read historical account of the Union army's attempt to break a city. Great read for any history buff!

Doc : Orra A. Phelps, M.D., Adirondack Naturalist and Mountaineer
Published in Hardcover by North Country Books (01 March, 2001)
Author: Mary Arakelian
Amazon base price: $29.95
Average review score:

Doc: a woman unafraid to soil her nails!
This timeless memoir is inspirational to me, in that Dr. Orra Phelps came into this world with life's challenges always at her heels. She persevered through Johns Hopkins Medical School, into giving 50 years of service as a physician. At the same time she lived and loved nature, and all out of doors. She was the glue that salved her family, mentor to countless women, stubborn, opinionated, and a tireless correspondent. Through her letters I learned her life story, week by week, as if it were happening today. What a ride! What a read!

Fascinating bio of an early 20th cent. doctor/naturalist!
This book is the story of Orra Phelps, a truly inspiring woman who lived in the Adirondack Mountains and practiced medicine. She was born in the 19th century, making her one of the earlier female doctors, and she was an avid naturalist. Her life was far from easy, but she struggled through hard times to earn an education and make a career for herself. One of the most interesting things about this book is the fact that Dr. Phelps was also a hiker, participating in early mountain climbing clubs in upstate New York. The biographical story was very well-written, with a fluid narrative that made Orra come alive for me. She really was an incredible woman! This book is a must-read for anyone interested in the Adirondacks or upstate New York, as well as naturalists, those interested in wildlife, and, of course, anyone who likes stories about brave, intelligent, daring women!

A Motivational Boost!
I just loved this book about improving low self-esteem. It not only defined low self-esteem, but provided solutions for developing a healthy self-esteem through a four step process. It was motivating, inspiring, and educational. I liked that this book was personal, and that the author had experienced low self-esteem while living a successful life by other standards. He reminded us that we are 'fearfully and wonderfully made' in God's image, and that we can change the image we have of ourselves. I liked that this book related from a Christian perspective, but I feel it is a must read for all - especially young professionals deciding what to do with their lives.

Made In His Image is a Must Read!
Wow! This is an awesome book.
Millions of people are the victims of Low Self Esteem (LSE). Unfortunately Low Self Esteem (LSE) is no respecter of persons! LSE will victimize anyone willing to entertain it. The results are broken dreams, unfulfilled hopes and lives tattered, tormented and torn by abuse, depression, guilt, unforgiveness, inferiority complexes, self-hatred and perfectionism.
As children of God and joint heirs with Christ, we are entitled to be healed, delivered and set free from our infirmities (our sicknesses and weaknesses) and iniquities (our sins). It comes
with relationship.

In an honest and candid way, Made in His Image, Overcoming Low Self Esteem by Discovering the Real You, written by Kenneth D. Phelps, is a frank dialog into the depths of Low Self Esteem and how to overcome it, by the power of God. Made in His Image is a message of healing, hope and inspiration, supported with real life antidotal insight, which empowers the reader to connect the theoretical to the practical.

Made in His Image An excellent life review and inspirational at passage points
• with Events • with Person • with Choices.

With values centered in God (Spiritually), Self (Emotionally) and Others (Socially).
I really liked it. I would highly recommend it.

What a treasure!
I think this is out of print and it's such a shame, because it's a fabulous book. Even for folk tale lovers who don't identify as feminist, these tales are sure to delight. I am really charmed by the creative tales which show many strong, skillful, smart, and powerful women and girl characters as the protagonists of the stories. Another bonus is the author's effort to find tales representing many different cultures of the world.

I would recommend this to be read to and by children who love folk tales, as well as adults who like this genre. What a wonderful feeling to believe a girl can be the star of her own show, the director of her own destiny!

Maid of the North: Feminist Folk Tales from Around the World
This collection of stories is wonderful. My six-year-old (advanced) daughter's favorite, Elsa and the Evil Wizard, is just one of the many folk tales in this collection. With all the elements of a good fairy tale, in addition to a strong, resourceful, and intelligent female role model, this is one story that makes girls feel good about being decisive and strong-willed. Our daughters and sons need to hear more stories like this one, to counteract the weak princess types whose only worth and happiness is too closely connected to being "saved" by the handsome prince. We also love Ethel Phelps' stories about Tatterhood. More like this, please!
