Excellent book on Solaris Boot Disk Management
Summary

This is a great book for Solaris system administrators or planners. This book offers practical planning advice as well as real world demonstrations on how to configure and maintain Solaris boot disks that ensure minimal outage and recovery effort when a disk fails or when the boot disk is corrupted. This book covers using the VERITAS Volume Manager, Sun Solstice DiskSuite Software and the Sun Live Upgrade software to configure and maintain boot disks.

Details

The first 3 chapters discuss the issues involved in choosing and building a Solaris boot disk. Boot disk partitioning is covered in detail. Swap device recommendations are presented. Upgrading Solaris installations using Live Upgrade is demonstrated. Basic concepts dealing with patches, firmware upgrades and Open Boot Prom maintenance are also covered.

Chapter 4 deals with various configuration scenarios for boot disks. It clearly discusses the advantages and disadvantages of each scenario from a technical and budgeting perspective. Reference configurations are documented, which offers a great framework for customization.

The rest of this book focuses on using VERTIAS Volume Manager and Sun Solstice DiskSuite Software to build robust boot disks environments. Each logical volume manager is given 2 chapters of coverage on the configuration and maintenance of a Solaris boot disk environment. Commands to build the boot disk environments are demonstrated using each LVM.

This book also discusses documentation procedures, boot disk disaster recovery procedures and general boot disk backup procedures. Technical, budgeting and procedural perspectives are used to examine these topics.

I think this is a great book for Solaris administrators of all technical levels. It is also a great reference for Solaris planners to use when building robust Solaris systems.

This book is well worth the money. Any serious Solaris administrator or planner should buy this book and read it.

A remarkable anthology of twenty-four poets
The Franconia, New Hampshire, farm of the American poet Robert Frost was turned into a museum and center for poetry and the arts in 1976. From that time, "The Frost Place" has been annual event wherein an emerging poet has been invited to spend the summer living in the house where Frost once lived and wrote some of his greatest poetry. The Breath Of Parted Lips: Voices From The Robert Frost Place, Volume One is a remarkable anthology of twenty-four poets, each of whom won that honor of a summer's residency and document the success of the original concept as a means of generating outstanding poetry while nurturing the poet's muse in the rooms and views that were once the inspiration of the great Robert Frost. Poem At 40: Windwashed--as if standing next to the highway,/a truck long as the century sweeping by,/all things at last bent in the same direction./An opening, as if all/the clothes my ancestors ever wore/dry on lines in my body:/wind-whipped, parallel with the ground,/some sleeves sharing a single clothespin/so that they seem to clasp hands,/seem to hold on.//And now that I can see/up the old women's dresses,/there's nothing but a filtered light./And now that their men's smoky breath/has traversed the earth,/it has nothing to do with them./And now that awkward, fat tears of rain/slap the window screen,/now that I'm naked too,/cupping my genitals, tracing with a pencil/the blue vein between my collar bone and breast,/I'll go to sleep when I'm told.

A heavily dog-eared and marked up book on my shelf.
My thanks to Gordon Padwick. Integrated Office Application lifted the veil from my eyes and I finally understood how to control one MS Office application from another. It has great, practical examples of how to control Excel from Access, Access from Excel, Excel from Word, etc. Learning about CopyFromRecordset (an Excel Range method) was enough to justify purchase of this book! I grok it now.

Campaspe, Sappho and Phao: John Lyly (The Revels Plays)

Shakespeare's great predecessor
John Lyly's satires are brilliant works of drama not frequently read by the lay public. The characters ring true and set in context Shakespeare's comedies that followed. Most academics study these plays as precursors of the great bard's, but they are vital, humorous dramas that are worthy of attention in their own right.

An excellent book for Householders and Decorators alike.
This book is more then just a reference guide of carpets from around the world. It shows how carpets can be used in various interiors, from country houses to a city pied-a-terre. The authors go into detail about color, design, and texture and use actual interiors to show the many ways that carpets can be used. From the great rooms of Chatsworth, to staircases, entry halls, bedrooms in a small cottage, nothing is left to the imagination. Useful chapters include "Care & Repair" and an excellent international directory. There are also excellent examples of antique, traditional, and contemporary rugs from every part of the world as well as a good section on Kilms. This book is very useful for anyone who wants to get ideas about how to use and decorate with rugs, and more importantly WHICH rug is best for a particular setting.

Interesting historical perspective in this fascinating work
As 1916 draws towards an end, the war between Great Britain and Germany appears to have no end in sight. Prime Minister Lloyd George has been in office for a week when his friend Sir Arthur Conan Doyle persuades him to host a séance in order to contact his daughter, dead for nine years. Because he feels guilt, Lloyd agrees. Just as the medium goes into a trance, the lights go out. When they come back on, the Prime Minister's youngest teenage daughter is missing.

Doyle visits his friend John Darnell, a psychic debunker, to attend the next night's séance. As happened previously, the lights go out just as the medium enters a trance. When the lights come back on, someone stabbed to death an aid to the prime minister. Someone has used the cloak of the séances to kidnap a teenager and kill a person who unluckily chanced upon information. Lloyd receives a ransom note threatening the life of his child if he fails to agree to Germany's peace offering. John Darnell races the clock to save a life of an innocent caught up in world politics.

Sam McCarver writes a fascinating work that gives the audience a strong sense of the times. The mood of the British people before America's entry into World War I is fascinating yet understandable. Nonetheless, the magic to THE CASE OF THE 2ND SÉANCE lies in the hero whose actions insure readers get more than their money's worth.
