Rewarding, engaging, highly recommended reading
Emmanuel Dongala is an African novelist of outstanding ability. In The Fire Of Origins, we are introduced to Mankunku, born of mysterious circumstances on a banana plantation, we follow his personal saga in an unnamed African country from its pre-colonial era through the horrors of European subjugation, to independence and all the complexities and contradictions, ideals and disillusionments of post-colonial self-rule. The Fire Of Origins is peppered with memorable characters ranging from charlatans and saints, to workers and bureaucrats, to warriors and peacemakers. The Fire Of Origins is rewarding, engaging, highly recommended reading by a truly gifted author which will leave the reader eagerly looking forward to more of his work in the future.
ICONS: Remembrance Calendar, featuring the work of Sister Emmanuel of Maine (undated)

A gorgeous keepsake calendar -- to keep (and use) for years!
The more I gaze upon these icons, the more I appreciate them. In this Remembrance Calendar setting, the beautiful icons offer a wonderful reminder of the Almighty, as well as a helpful setting for annual family events, including birthdays and anniversaries. I really like the "Windows Into Heaven" introduction in the calendar; also, there's a helpful and inspiring "Personal Word from Sister Emmanuel" at the end which is well worth reading. I plan to give this calendar as a gift often -- not only at Christmas, but for weddings, birthdays, First Communions and at Easter!

A work of quality
Martin Srjak provides a new and intriguing means of conceptualizing Derrida's project of deconstructionism. This book is a positive and articulate discussion of postmodernist ideas, and it will serve as a means for de-simplifying many of the overly simplistic ideas about poststructuralist discourse.

Recommended for ethics studies reading lists.
A recommended picks at the college level. Jeffrey Dudiak's Intrigue Of Ethics is especially recommended for schools with strong philosophy department: it focuses on the thought of Emmanuel Levinas, exploring prospects for peaceful dialogue. Very specific to his theories, this holds broader applications for ethical discussions in general.

Africa's reply to "100 Years of Solitude"
I have read both the French original and the German translation of this book and it is brilliant. Political and private life in Congo seen through the eyes of a naive if scientifically minded young boy results in an epic without the boring bits. Compelling read. If you can read either of the two versions, do. And could someone please do an English translation as well ...

Something special
I can't compare this book to anything I read before. The author made something extraordinatu. He showed us one specific village, how it existed 700 years ago and I cannot think this is history. i read about people living there as if they 'd still be living. The reconstruction is magnificent. We learn about specific families, their loves, gossips, joys and problems. We even know what they ate and when they were making love. This is like feature from modern small town. But over the people of Montaillou there is a cloud - they are - mostly - heretics - and Inquisition is preparing the forces.... Well what more can I say. I even visited Montaillou after reading the book. And the ancestors of these families are still living there. After so many years... Read it!

Mary S. Stowell
This is a wonderful book about how the psyche believes in life beyond bodily death. It is full of stories, myths, and experiences that will wake you up. I have given away so many copies of this book that I always keep an extra on hand. I am glad it is back in print.
The Paradox of Power and Weakness: Levinas and an Alternative Paradigm for Psychology (Suny Series, Alternatives in Psychology)
Published in Hardcover by State Univ of New York Pr (1998)
Amazon base price: $21.50
Average review score:
Kunz uses Levinas to radically open up the way we live.
Kunz's book is a wonderful read without losing the thickness of Levinas's ideas. It answered the question I've struggled with for years, if you're happy and complete, why act? He makes a clear case for moving the center of existance off the ego and onto the other. We act because need in the face of the other calls us to act. In the face of that need we have no choice but to act, even if that act is to turn coldly from those in need.
He argues for a new psychology based not on the ego as the center of the world, but on the need of the other as the center of the world.
This book radically opened up my way of being with the ideas of Levinas, and I can't recommend it highly enough.
