The Schemata of the Stars: Byzantine Astronomy from A.D. 1300
Published in Hardcover by World Scientific Pub Co (1999)
Authors: Panagiotis Sotiroudis and Emmanuel A. Paschos
Amazon base price: $44.00

A look into Byzantine astronomy.
This translation of an important Byzantine document, first uncovered by the great astronomy historian Otto Neugebauer from Vatican sources, gives us insight into the contributions made by Byzantine astronomers to cosmological theory. It produces evidence that in addition to preserving the ideas of Ptolemy and Islamic contribitors such as al-Tusi, the Byzantines added their own modifications to this corpus. The authors of this translation and commentary suggest that the original document made its way to Italy and may even have influenced Copernicus, who spoke Greek and traveled in Italy. Although this book is somewhat technical with its formulae and epicycles, the more casual reader can skim through these and still get the point. Also, the side-by-side photos of the original text and illustrations with clear schematics next to them, and the translations of their content, will appeal to the more visually-oriented reader. It is exciting to see an original 13th Century document opened up before one's eyes!

Planetary models in Byzantine
This book studies planetary models, described in a Byzantine article, written at the end of the 13th century by the medical doctor and amateur astronomer Gregory Chioniades. The Byzantine manuscript describes the motion of the sun, the moon and the five planets, gives parameters for their trajectories and, in addition, contains thirteen pages with diagrams. The book presents the first edition of the original text (Vat.Gr. 211 ff 106v-121r), its English translation and an extensive analysis of its content. At the exhibit "Rome Reborn" in the Library of Congress, the Byzantine article was described as "one short and confused treatise, translated by Gregory Chioniades, ..." . It is commendable that the authors Paschos and Sotiroudis make a serious effort to analyse the difficult text and compare its contents with Arabic and Persian schools of thought (Ibn-ash-Shatir and al-Tusi) and with the heliocentric models of Copernicus and Newton. They point out the influences that astronomy received from the East and the transmission of the new methods to the West. They show that Chioniades is a master in handling planar rotations and utilizes them to improve the trajectories of the moon and Mercury. The book shows that the ancient astronomical tradition flourished in Byzantium and the classical methods were modified, in a few cases, to include more accurate description of the paths of the planets as a function of time. In addition to historical remarks and comparisons, the book contains analytical methods, which are useful to students of history of sciences.

A Bush of Voices
Published in Paperback by Brunswick Pub Co (1989)
Authors: Sim E. Kombem and Emmanuel K. Ngwainmbi
Amazon base price: $7.95
Average review score:

The author has a strong mind for imagery.
The author has used a style that is rarely seen in contemporary literary works--lack of punctuation.

The poems read like dialogue. Other than pauses, we do not see punctuation in dialogue.

He has an eye for detail although he raises questions in the reader's mind when he suddenly stops in the middle of an idea and begins a new one. This makes me question and think harder.

His presentation of the political climate in Africa, especially in poems regarding South Africa is vivid, at once arresting, and even comical.

I like to know his native country and invite him to read at one of our sessions, if you or his publisher can locate him.

I found a copy of the book in the Library of Congress and wish to know where to buy some copies to give my family as Christmas present.

Communication Efficiency and Rural Development in Africa
Published in Paperback by University Press of America (2002)
Author: K. Emmanuel Ngwainmbi
Amazon base price: $32.50
Average review score:

A Book to Read
Dr. Ngwainmbi's book distinguishes itself from other books on development communication in three ways; its factual presentation of rural development problems in Africa, its critical analysis of media and the latter's inevitable role in supporting development efforts in Africa, and its unique description of characteristics of rural residents or people in more remote parts of the continent.

With world cultures converging through cyber communications, new political leadership and Generation X, Western thinkers should quickly increase their knowledge of Africa. They should pay attention not only to that continent's undepleted resources but also to its new efforts towarding democracy.

"Communication Efficiency & Rural Development in Africa" is a well-researched product with valuable information.

I highly recommend the book to small scale businesses, entrepreneurs, scholars, policymakers, and students of African New Age development.

A brilliant, canonical text on gays and lesbians of color
This book is one of the first anthologies about gays and lesbians of color. If you can find a copy, do buy it. I found myself citing this book all the time for college papers. This book includes great articles about figures such as Audre Lorde and Arturo Islas. It has wonderful essays from up and coming academics such as Sharon Hom and Martin Manasalan IV. Even a decade after its release, this book will seem fresh and relevant. This anthology also does a great job of focusing on Latinos, Asians, and Blacks equally rather than tokenizing any group. Two big snaps for Critical Essays!

Gentle, warm, and touching
Emmanuel is a collection of Barbara Revor's short poems, prose vignettes, parables, and other writings reflecting her abiding faith in God and her love and enjoyment of His gift of life. Gentle, warm, and touching, Emmanuel reflects on the sacrifice that Jesus Christ made for humanity, an insightful perspective on classical Biblical stories, and much more. A soulful and touching read. Things We Hold Dear: Fragile is the grasp we hold/To things we think so dear/Things that bring us sorrow--/Worldly things of fear//Solid is the love from One/Who died to free our fear/Who gave before we knew the love/Whose wait is ever near.//Whose patient wait we oft ignore/Pursuing things of dust/Whose love transcends the bounds of time/To vanquish our mistrust.//Teach me, Lord, to know the truth/Of what is right--what not/To grasp Your truth, to love Your Words/The world an afterthought.

A plan for peace
This book's theme is close to my heart, and is the best example of serious thought among those seeking to bring about justice for preborn children. Put together over John Cavanaugh-O'Keefe's long and storied career, _Emmanuel Solidarity_ is the magna carta of a religious foundation for adopting and implementing non-violence as the paradigm for global pro-life activism. O'Keefe draws upon not only Pope John Paul II, but also Gandhi, King, the Filoppino revolution, and Christian thinkers from Nagasaki after World War II. This readable and persuasive work is also the most thorough rebuttal of the use of violence in response to abortion. It is essential reading for thinkers and actors alike who take seriously the challenge of non-violence and the proper response to social structures ..., especially to ... abortion.
