Reachign For The Stars
Excellant view of breeding in England. If you are considering becoming a breeder this will make you look at some hard choices you may have to make about keeping your own stock down to a manageable number.

A great read, the author is obviously an expert in her field and an entertaining writer too.

If your looking for genetics info it isn't here, this book is written from an older pre-genetic perspective.

A "Must Have" for the serious dog fancier.
If you could only have one book to guide you as a serious breeder and/or canine judge, this would be it! All the knowledge, experience and wisdom is contained in this one book and all you have to do is absorb it. Don't be put off by her Laborador Retriever background, the information pertains to all breeds. I only wish I had read this book 10 years ago.

A facinating read and highly informative
Learing about the five stages of the development of a dog breeder and exhibiter was mind boggling. Mary Roslin Williams is an excellent story teller and her knowledge cuts across all breeds. With the added information bringing the book up-to-date and adding famous dogs and breeders from around the world has made this book even more valuable.

An Adventure with Billy Bunny
This book is beautifully illustrated, as are all of Maurice Pledger's books. I have been reading these books to my now four-year-old granddaughter for over two years. She has learned colors and how to identify and count the various items in the pictures. The books by Maurice Pledger are her favorites. She never tires of having them read over and over again, although we have a very large collection of children's books.

Billy Bunny
This book is beautifully illustrated. It is my son's favorite book and we read it almost every night. He cannot read yet, but he loves to uncover the animals behind the pop-up's. He is delighted when he finds the animals. The last page is full of butterflies and he always sqeals in delight.

A cute book. We all love it.
This is a wonderful book that subtlely shows the stages of the butterfly laying the eggs through to the emergence of a butterfly. I would definately like to order a 2nd copy as the original copy has been read so many times. This is a keeper. I would highly recommend this book

not just for children
This book is a gem. It's tender, clever, and deftly written. It's wonderful for reading aloud. I had trouble finding it for years, and I'm so pleased to see that it's available again.

Present From A Teacher
I am thirty-seven now and a teacher; I probably chose this profession because of Mr. Erick Burkett, who taught me and my chums when we were in sixth grade. He was patient and funny. He held us spellbound when he read L'Engle's "Wrinkle in Time". The next year he got married and moved away, but he saw some promise in me (I was constantly writing stories in sixth grade and showing them to him for his approval) and he wrote some very fatherly and wonderful letters to me until I was a senior in high school. When I was a senior he sent me "The Bat Poet" and encouraged me in my writing. Of course I wrote reams of poems after reading it. This is a very special book, especially for timid young students with dreams of being published.

The Bat-Poet and me.
This my favorite children's book. It is as good-- perhaps not as accessible-- as Charlotte's Web. It teaches real lessons about poetry and about loneliness. It asks questions that it can't answer: why do we like to read about things that frighten us? And it conveys the distinction between writing a poem that is praised and writing a poem that evokes real feelings.

That The Bat-Poet is so little known has always been a mystery to me. Then again, considering the state of publishing in this country, maybe it's not such a mystery. And maybe it's just as well that word-of-mouth is what brings new readers to the Bat-Poet.

A Century of Belgian Horses in America

A CENTURY OF BELGIAN HORSES IN AMERICA
A very informative volume packed with hard to find information and photos. Detailed histories of the horses, their breeders and their exhibitors is included. As a member of a family once deeply involved with these fine work horses this book provided me with information and photos that I was unable to find anywhere else. With the principal people involved with the establishment of this breed in America diminishing with time, it should become an ever more valuable resource.

A Century of Belgians Horses in America
I have been involved with belgain horses all my life. Studying pedigrees was limited, until I got this book. Nearly every horse I wish to find out more about is in here including their pictures. It's a resource I would not want to be without. I hope Maurice B. Tellen writes a sequel. This is probably the best book you will ever find on the American history of the belgian horse. He is also the founder of the Draft Horse Journal, a magazine published quarterly (anyone involved in the draft horse business should have it).

Nice to see that Belgians are better known by that now
It is amazing that Mr. Telleen could put so much information in a well illustrated book like that. For someone who is interested in "Belgian horses" it is a must. For someone interested in "horses" it is a sign to get cheap information. Hope that I can find more books on Belgians in America. I do not mean only horses but also Belgian people overthere. I was in contact with someone who's father brought Belgian horses to Canada and The USA before WWI. Is there anyone by the way who know horseseller Vandenbroucke and Delannoy?

The best introduction into Chivalry you can get
This book delivers a very thorough description of chivalry, beginning with a very good explanation how and when chivalry started. It also delivers a superb definition about what chivalry reaaly is, or what it was supposed to be. Alas, the only thing missing is more pictures - then it would be the definite book about chivalry. As it is now, it is "only" the best introduction to the matter you can possibly get.

A MAGNIFICENT BOOK!
This solid volume is one of the best works on the complex institutions of chivalry and knighthood that I at least have ever seen. It is a very erudite work crammed with interesting information and written in an intelligent but readable style. Mr. Keen presents an argument for the reality of chivalric values that seems very convincing and well- researched. If you are at all interested in knighthood or European history, buy this book!

Excellent analysis of "real" (historical) chivalry
Like all of Maurice Keen's books, this one is insightful, well-written, and based on thorough scholarship. This is the place to start a study of the subject.

great classics
WE HAVE HAD THE LITTLE BEAR BOOK FATHER BEAR COMES HOME FOR AT LEAST TWENTY YEARS,AND WE STILL LOVE IT! I JUST BOUGHT ANOTHER LITTLE BEAR BOOK FOR MY NEICE, AND AM WAITING FOR IT TO COME. IF YOUR LOOKING FOR A GREAT BOOK YOU CAN'T GO WRONG WITH THESE!

Father Bear Comes Home
There are 4 different stories in this book. My favorite was Little Bear's Mermaid. I liked when Little Bear saw the mermaid when his mom and dad were sleeping. I also liked when Little Bear went fishing. Other kids will like this book because it has many stories in it.

Only the best
The Little Bear saga are truly classic. From the artwork and storylines you think you are reading a Victorian era storybook. No your grandmother didn't read these stories to you. Soon enough we will be reading them to our grandchildren. Buy the hardback versions, your grandkids will love them.

An overlooked classic -- Early Sendak for kids and adults
This book is a terrific classic -- a listing of definitions, "laws" if you will, that are really almost self-evident in childhood. Each page contains a collection of drawings that illustrate the definition of something. The illustrations tend to show the early Sendak style, but in this book, there is essentially no overwhelming background -- each boy or girl or dog is illustrated in black and white (or beige). Each picture is self-contained, but there is some flow to the text on certain pages.

It's difficult to describe this book, but there is really a separate level for adults in these definitions that makes this an enjoyable read for parent and child. For the adult, this book evokes the simplest play of childhood and a return to certain basic principles that were probably totally accepted and later forgotten. I don't know why, but this is an overlooked classic. I can't think of another book like this.

A wonderful book that my kids want to hear over and over
Or maybe it's me that picks out the book over and over at bedtime. I was really touched the other day when my 5-year-old son helped my 3-year-old son zip his jacket, looked at me and said "a brother is to help." A great book that everyone should read.

Mind-blowing! brilliant!
My girlfriend got this book as a Christmas present, and I picked it up and read it. We don't know why it isn't listed with the zen books! Simple, profound truths about the world we live in: dishes are to do.

A wonderful book for bedtime
My son, 2 1/2, loves Little Bear from the cartoons on Noggin and was thrilled that we found these books to read to him. He often selects this book (or one of the other Minarik books) from his bookcase at bedtime for my wife or I to read to him. The stories are brief but entertaining and the illustrations are rich and engaging. The books are a bit flimsy and I would prefer that they be available in a more durable format but that is a minor issue compared to the wonderful content of these books.

cute story for beginning readers and/or Little Bear fans
This story about Little Bear is a charming introduction to the world of reading for beginners, especially for those who are already familiar with this gentle cub and his friends. Little Bear is a sweet child to his mother and father, and a good friend to Duck, Hen and Cat. Minarik's simple narrative will be easy enough for young readers, and Sendak's illustrations will hold their attention.

In this story, Little Bear draws a picture for his grandmother, and asks Hen to take it to her. When Grandmother sends a kiss back to Little Bear, Hen carries it until she sees some friends, then she passes it along to Frog, who carries it until he sees a pond and passes it on to Cat .... This is a fun story with a few simple lines and large illustrations on each page. Kids will enjoy the funny ending (and so will you).

My daughter showed real interest in learning how to read
My daughter is 5 years old . She watches Little Bear on T.V. and wants to learn how to read this book because of the show . I will buy more of these books soon as long as she is interested in them . I will also buy them for my niece and nephew as well . I really like the easy to read words that don't discourage kids from wanting to learn to read .The paperback books are easy to take with us . Thank you ,

My granddaughter and I both love it!
Our 3-year-old granddaughter just spent almost two weeks with us. Reading to her has been both a daily (several times a day!) ritual since she was a baby...as well as a source of delight for both her and us. Her favorite story is still the "Goblin Story," which appears in this book. You can easily read it to your young one so that he or she is excited, giggling, and having a wonderful experience with you!

This is a charming book that kids absolutely love!
My kids have been captivated by this book from the time they were barely old enough to look at the pictures. My oldest is almost five, and she still asks me to read this book, even though she has it memorized! It is a charming tale of Little Bear's visit to his grandparents' house. The love in this bear family is so heartwarming, and the sense of fun so nicely realized that adults will love it too. Maurice Sendak's illustrations, which have a 19th Century feel, are the perfect complement to this story. My only complaint is I can't find this book in hardback, and our paperback version is worn out! Two other books in this series - Little Bear and Little Bear's Friend are also great for kids from age 2 to around 7.

Readers of all ages will thoroughly enjoy this book.
Little lost robins, ghastly goblins, and a grandmother's home-cooked meal delight Little Bear during a visit to his grandparents' house. Minarik's easy reader book features short chapters with simple sentences and a large typeface; the beautiful illustrations expand upon the storyline while providing a moderate level of text support. Never-ending rows of knick-knacks, perpetual laps to sit upon, and ceaseless supplies of home-baked goods enchant Little Bear as he soaks up the love around him like a sponge. Sendak's simple, yet descriptive ink drawings further engage readers in this refreshing tale; they are indeed worthy of the Caldecott Honor Book award which decorates the cover. This book is ideal for both upper and lower elementary school readers. Its four chapters are episodic, making them perfect stopping points for the lower elementary school reader. Moreover, when read in its entirety, Little Bear's Visit provides the older child with a large sense of accomplishment. Grandfather's campfire-ghost tale may potentially frighten even older readers; however, a clear use of foreshadowing and an explicit, upbeat resolution sufficiently reassure young readers while maintaining older children's excitement. Relevant to children across cultures, Little Bear's Visit uses hugs and loving words in order to effectiely model tender adult-child realtionships. This charming chapter narrative for beginning readers will give Little Bear a special place in the hearts of young children everywhere.

Maurice Bishop Speaks: The Grenada Revolution and Its Overthrow 1979-83

From Malcolm X to socialist revolutioary
This is the story of a big revolution in a very small country. In 1979 the movement led by Maurice Bishop overthrew the local dictator of Greneda, one E.Gairy.Land reform, free education and health care, new forms of working people's power to replace outdated parliamentary "democracy" which led to the dictator in the first place, development of agriculture and tourism as national industries to benefit the workers and farmers instead of superrich foreign bosses : all this inevitablely infuriated Washington D.C. But most of all they feared and loathed the fact that Grenada marched alongside the other anti-capitalist revolutions in the region : in Cuba and Nicaragua.Read this book and find out why Fidel Castro said "Cuba, Nicaragua and Grenada are three giants rising up in the Carribean."Perhaps most interesting for fighters against the profit system in this country is the story of the evolution of Bishop and his comrades : from Carribean followers of Malcolm X to socialist revolutionaries. The Stalinist coup that assasinated Bishop and opened the door to Reagan and the Democrats' bipartisan brutal invasion in 1983 is also well covered here.Others in the Carribean will take the same road during the new Great Depression looming in our ( workers' and farmers' ) future.

Maurice Bishop's Imperishable Legacy
Advertisements for cruises and holidays to Grenada describe this Caribbean island as a place where "nothing much ever happens". The truth could not be more different. Less than 20 years ago Maurice Bishop led a popular revolution there that lasted for three and a half years and involved Grenada's working people of town and countryside in transforming their society and lives. The Grenada Revolution's giant strides in popular education, economic production, slashing unemployment, and developing national pride and internationalism, are graphically detailed in this outstanding book of Bishop's speeches that were made in the course of the revlutionary years. Bishop and the people of Grenada wrote an imperishable chapter in world history. The speeches address not just the situation of one small island, but the entire world faced with the crisis of capitalism that has sharpened greatly in the past two decades. This book is also valuable for the introductory analysis by Steve Clark of how the revolution was overthrown from within with the murder of Bishop and other revolutionary leaders in October 1983, plus indispensable documents from the Cuban government and speeches by Fidel Castro on Cuba's role in supporting the revolution.
