A beautifully presented compilation of natural photography
Portraits Of Himalayan Flowers by Toshio Yoshida (botanical photographer, amateur botanist, and Associate Researcher at the University Museum of the University of Tokyo) is a beautifully presented compilation of natural photography and the compilation of ten years of travel. 108 gorgeous color pictures showcase the wondrous beauty of plants that correspond to the 108 beads of the Tibetan Buddhist rosary. Each full-page photograph includes a brief caption about the flower, as well as a knowing introduction combined to create a highly recommended and brilliantly presented work. Portraits Of Himalayan Flowers is an enthusiastically recommended addition to any personal, professional, or community library Gardening Shelf or Horticultural Studies collection.

Outstanding photography! Colorful flowers!
This is an incredibly interesting book full of photographs showing the plants in their native environment. Toshio Yoshida did a fantastic job with all 108 full color photographs that are in the book.

By getting down on the ground and looking up at the plants you will get to see a viewpoint that is rarely offered in the world of plant photography.

Each photo caption contains the botanical name of the species as well as a wonderful description. While I'm not a big fan of photography books, the photos in this book definitely made me sit up and take notice.

There are plants in there that I had never seen before which were so unusual that they made me want to find out more about them. If you like unusual plants that are brightly colored or plant photographs that are above the average then you will want to acquire this book for your library.

Primary Surgery: Non-Trauma

He saved me (and my patient) at least 3 times
This book enables you to do any kind of surgical operations, even if you are not able at all, even if you have never seen that operation done before. It is mainly focused on low technology operating techniques but shows also how to perform very complicated operations. It tells you all kinds of problems you can expect, all kinds of complication you may cause by your incapacity and how to solve them.
I used it a lot right before operations; it told me in advance the mistakes I would do and how to repair the damage.
Even if you work in a rich country you will find it great; in fact, even with high technology operating theatres, you can still use low technology to solve big problems.

Primary Surgery, Volume One
This manual for surgery in Lesser Developed Countries would be invalualble for any physician contemplating working overseas in operating suites far less sophisticated than they would be used to here in the United States. It is full of specific descriptions and illustrations covering a comprehensive list of surgical procedures one may be asked to do while doing volunteer medical work. The little vignettes about actual situations at the end of each chapter add an excellent perspective. My associate,... has used this book extensively in Haiti for thirteen years, and finds it extremely useful.

The Quiet Man and Other Stories

Lovely stories of Ireland in the 1920's
These tales are told in a manner Irish tales are meant to be told. The lyrical manner and quiet truth of its telling are a rich and delicious read. From the drama of the Black and Tan War to the romance of an Irish summers evening, Maurice Walsh gets straight into your head. Irish wit never underestimates your intelligence, and this book never does either. Hints and fleeting references always come back to haunt you, and the way each of these short stories seamlessly integrate, you will find yourself smiling in admiration. The Quiet Man really captures the flavor of the time, the idealism of the Irish Republic, the heroism of its defense and the realism of hard choices made for that idealism. This is storytelling at its Celtic best, you will not be dissapointed...

Stories of the Irish/English conflict, circa 1920 ring true
I was happy to find this book republished after years of searching for out-of-print copies. Every story is connected; every story gives a different point of view. Pick up this book and you will become enthralled with the stories of the men and women who lived, loved, and fought during the early years of Ireland's fight for independence. While I realize the book is a work of fiction, I found myself, nevertheless, rooting for each person as he or she struggled with the problems the author put before each of them: alcohol, honesty, familial obligations, moral conscience, the love of country. If you like to read of adventure with your romance(or vice versa), these stories are for you. The cover doesn't do the book justice. The stories are so much more than just John Wayne as "The Quiet Man". At the end of the book I found myself wishing that the author had written another collection of stories continuing the saga of this era and these people.

Just what we needed!
Recently, I had the opportunity to read "Raising Emotionally Intelligent Teenagers", a new book about raising teenagers. I was very interested in reading the book, as I knew that someday my young children will be teens, and I like to be prepared!

As I read the book, "Raising Emotionally Intelligent Teenagers", I can not begin to tell you how uplifted I began to feel. While my oldest is only ten years old, I immediately realized that this book could help me with raising her even before she officially becomes a teenager. I have already began to experience some strains on our relationship, but this book gave me new insight and approaches that I alone would not have thought of.

My husband and I have discussed that we are worried about the future, when we will have hormone filled teens. Will be raise them right? Have we provide the best foundations for them now? What obstacles must we overcome once these little ones are transformed into young adults? We know how we were for our parents, so how are our children going to be for us? "Raising Emotionally Intelligent Teenagers" was the perfect book we needed.

Enjoyable reading for parents of tweens and teens!
Once again these three have come up with an easy to read, insightful book on the joys and pains of parenting. Their humorous but sincere dialog shares the good and the bad of the volatile teenage years without being too preachy about things. I enjoyed this book as much as their last one, Emotionally Intelligent Parenting. I would definitely recommend this as a "must read" to anyone trying to raise a teenager in today's world.

A Classic that's hard to classify
I am so glad this book is still in print. It means that you can have the enjoyment of sharing the whimsical story about the quirky Rosie and the miraculous drawings of Maurice Sendak.

This isn't a saccharine kiddy book, or a gritty true-to-life drama of childhood situations. It's just a fine read and one of those books that kids ask for again and again. In our family, it was the favorite evening book of my baby sister, and I have to say, she has exquisite taste, then and now, 30 years later.

A book the whole family will enjoy hearing again and again.
I first found this book in my school library in New Zealand 32 years ago! Took it home to read to my baby sister, and the whole family sat around listening with delight. We still love it all these years later. Sendak's story and illustrations capture the childhood of the average kid - with humour and whimsy, and true psychology, but totally without condescension. In my family, this is considered a classic. Guard your copy well - future generations will appreciate it too!

The kind of rare book which expands a child's imagination
What a joy it is to find this book again, first printed in 1958. Books like this truly aren't written anymore, probably because it takes a special writer with the imagination and creative vision to believe that children CAN understand these little stories - and to be enriched by them. Not all of these pieces are immediately understandable, at least on a purely logical level, but they ARE intuitively and emotionally understandable, piecees like: "There was a kitten. And there was a lion. And the lion chased the kitten and the kitten ran. She ran into the woods and dug a hole for the lion to fall in. ...The Indians came and shot arrows in him. And they killed him. Then they shot arrows in all the lions on the world. They killed all the lions in the world...there n3ever were more lions Evermore. But there are still tigers. " Ah, the joy of this book!

Strange and Beautiful
Ruth Krauss was the best picture book writer of her generation, narrowly edging out Margaret Wise Brown and her husband, Crockett Johnson. But this early work of hers--one of the first books of Maurice Sendak's career as well--is on an entirely different level yet. These brief, even sudden, "tales from Children" that Krauss selected and edited are startling in the way they combine archaic and conversational language, storybook cliche and fresh imagination, image and substance. Some of them are simply joyful: "A Girl at a Party" gets the biggest laugh, using a twist ending O. Henry would have been proud of. Some are so strange and wonderful you might feel like you're reading Gilgamesh: "The White Boat," while only a page long, seems mythic in conception. I'm writing this from the perspective of an adult, but any child with imagination would have no trouble loving these stories. My daughter (age 6) listened, rapt, and wanted to write her own stories after. Thank you, Linnet Books, for reprinting this work!

Spoken Arabic of Cairo

Egyptian Arabic
In eight years of Arabic study, this is the best Egyptian dialect course I have seen. I personally prefer the Arabic script rather than the Romanized script used here, but I have found very few dialect courses use Arabic script as it is a 'spoken language'. This book would probably not be appropriate for a student using a native speaker as an instructor because of the Romanized script. I also would have preferred some tapes to accompany the course. Because of the lack of tapes, a beginner should probably buy an additional basic course with tapes to get pronunciation down, as well as learn the Arabic alphabet well. However, apart from this, I have yet to find a course that hits both all the important words and grammatical constructions in Egyptian dialect. Too many dialect courses give a generic mixture of MSA and several dialects, and never get past a basic teaching. This course goes past this, and has super drills to enforce the lessons. There is a sharp scarcity of intermediate dialect material, almost everything is for beginners, and this comes closest to providing that than any material I have seen previously. In addition, it is priced reasonably to boot.

This book is the best!
This book is absolutely my FIRST CHOICE for learning to speak Arabic, if all you want to do is SPEAK it. The book wastes no time with trying to teach you both the spoken and the written word (which are considerably different). It dives right into useful conversations and vocabularies. I learned to speak fluent Arabic from this book. It is used by the American University in Cairo in their Arabic Language program. I highly recommend this!

A classic - should be read by all students of Church History
St. Cyprian of Carthage was one of the giants of the 3rd century North African church. Although his period of ministry was relatively short, ending with martyrdom, the influence he had on the Church, not only in Carthage, but throughout the Christian world was profound.

In these two essays, Cyprian deals with the problems presented by the "lapsed" -- those Christians who, under threat of persecution, renounced their faith in some manner. He also deals with the Unity of the Church under the authority of the See of Rome and the Successor of the Apostles. Sometimes, Cyprian is eisegeted in such as fashion as to suggest that the North African church was independant of Rome. Those who make such suggestions have simply not read nor understood Cyprian in his entirety. While it is true that he was a man of strong passion and conviction -- and was not hesitant to criticize the Bishop of Rome -- Rome held his submission and his obedience -- even when he felt Rome was in error.

A lesson, perhaps, that modern-day Catholics might do well to emulate.

A wonderful, necessary addition to any serious student of Church History.

An excellent introduction to the thought of St. Cyprian.
Many Christians, both Protestant and Catholic, like to refer to St. Cyprian of Carthage to prover their points either for or the authority of the Papacy. It occurs to me that many of these apologists have not actually READ Cyprian! For those persons, and for all others interested in what he REALLY said and thought, read this scholarly translation of two of his more readily accessible works "The Lapsed" dealing with Christians who had broken under persecution, and "The Unity of the Catholic Church" dealing with his relationship as the bishop of a major city, with the Bishop of Rome.

Excellent reference
This is the definitely the edition to buy if you're studying/playing either of these two quartets. It's a reprint of the Durand edition, so it's about as official as you can get. and CHEAP, too! It's a nice small size- sort of halfway between a normal paperback book and a standard big Dover score.

Good Source!
Good to get the Debussy/Ravel String Quartet Cd, Emerson of coarse, and this handy book.
Good for composition to study and easy to open.
Go for it~!

A very unique book!
This book wiil knock you off your feet, especially the decoding process the author uses. The pictures in the decoding process will speak for themselves. Read this book if you're interested in Mayan mysteries!

Another piece to the puzzle
I have been reading/studying literature of this sort on and off for over a decade. Although as with other works alot is pure conjecture and an expanded view of the authors beleifs it still provided me with yet another piece of an ever more expanding and complex puzzle. Eygptology began my journey and hancocks works led me to mayan culture. For all those who seek the knowledge it is not held in one book but spread through many. This book is another essential read if only for the last two chapters which serve as another step in a long and illuminating journey. "A lion-cub is just a lion waiting to grow, and we are just Gods children"
