Hegel
This book presents the text with a great introduction and a superb appendix, thus making the book half text and half commentary ... perfect for the student. this text might be a nice way to slide into Hegel. Plus, Penguin Books smell so nice.

Knowing and History: Appropriations of Hegel in Twentieth-Century France

Of present Being in a delegitimated past
Powerful and informative analysis of complex trends in 20th Century French philosophic thought. With our growing consensus on the limits of knowledge, language, and the 'human', this text situates and clarifies the value and influence of Hegel minus metaphysics and the richness of Nietzschean inquiry still possible given Heidegger's ultimate limit of the return of the Same.

If we recognize Lacan's human-as-barred-subject, our only 'sensible' project, given one's structure, is pursuit of a 'reasonable' libidinal economy. History as parallel with no enlightened EndState leave us with the same injunction for social action. But we continue to insist "Che Vuoi?" Outstanding scholarship and wonderfully referenced.

comments on Learning from the World's Best Central Bankers
excerpt from review by Governor John Crow:

"(The authors) have captured the essence of the issues confronting (central bankers) and there's enough variety of circumstance and treatment to propel the topic vigorously through the seven chapters

I've read a number of books about central banking written in recent years. Unlike those books, (this Work) deals with the real questions the policy-maker faces - in a way that a textbook cannot match."

A must read for all MIS professionals
This book is exceptional because it outlines very clearly the history of computing to date highlighting the good and bad decisions made by IT managers along the way. The authors then provide a blueprint for the future with the hp3000 system as the backbone in an open systems arena. If you are a hp3000 user this will reaffirm what you already knew about this marvelous computer and answer the questions of how to effectively use this machine in the future. If you are not familiar with the hp3000 you will definitely have an appreciation after this read. HP should summarize this material for promotion to get the word out.

Excellent Guide
Being a parent that lives Adirondacks I am always looking for new things for me and my children to enjoy. I thought this was a great book for both kids and adults to look through and find activities. I found it had a variety of activities to do in a large 16 county area. I think this is the perfect guide for the parent who like to do weekend activities with the kids. For me its simply choose a place to go and find something interesting to do there. And trust me, there are plenty of choices! This is an escpecially helpful book for kids 2-12. I easily give this book the full 5 Amazon stars for excellent research, easy to use layout, variety of choices, wide selection of locations, and knowledge of what families want. So if your a parent looking for a guide for where to bring your kids, buy this book. In fact any parent living in upstate New York should get this book, you never know when you might need it.

The Life We Are Given
Published in Audio Cassette by Audio Renaissance (1996)
Authors: George Leonard, Michael Murphy, and Leonard J. Murphy

Adventures in living.
Mahatma Gandhi said that we must be the change we wish to see in the world. Through the Integral Transformative Practice (ITP) set forth in this 221-page handbook, George Leonard and Michael Murphy show us how to change the world by first changing our own hearts (p. 194). Leonard is a founder of the Human Potential Movement. Murphy is a founder of the Esalen Institute. Together they have created a lifelong program in THE LIFE WE ARE GIVEN leading to the transformation of body, mind, heart and spirit.

This is by no means a quick-fix, self-help book. Most of us realize only a small part of our human potential, and as a result we live only a fraction of the life we are given (p. 170). Not surprisingly, in our fast-paced culture, we turn to quick-fix programs, "crash" diets, weekend workshops, and audiotapes in our quest for self-knowledge and spiritual awakening (p. 27), rather than making a longterm commitment to strive for our highest potentials. Leonard and Murphy show that it is only through a lifelong practice of affirmations (pp. 53-72), Japanese "kata" (pp. 73-106), meditation (pp. 107-116), exercise (pp. 117-131), and nutrition (pp. 133-143) that we are able to realize our true potential for an extraordinary life. "How do you become more intellectually interested and focused? Practice. How do you become a more loving, caring, emotionally expressive person? Practice. How do you develop a sense of community and social service? Practice" (p. 45). The practices they offer here are also easy to integrate into the current American lifestyle ("the householder's path").

For anyone interested in stepping onto the path of self improvement, skip the multitude of self-help-quick-weight-loss books promising overnight results, and invest your time and money in this handbook instead, and then practice.

This book was great!
Michael Phillips did an excellent job of reproducing George MacDonald's Alec Forbes of Howglen. This book has all the touching qualities of a George MacDonald book with all the thought provoking one-liners that we all know George sat and crafted carefully.

The Maiden's Bequest, the Minister's Restoration, the Laird's Inheritance: Three Novels in One Volume
Published in Hardcover by Bethany House (1998)
Authors: George MacDonald and Michael Phillips
Amazon base price: $12.99
Average review score:

Reader
Though these 3 books are not what I consider MacDonalds best works, but they are still excellent. Phillips had done a great job of cutting out alot of sermonization, yet still retains the true essense of what MacDonald wrote that is as revelant in our day, as it was in his. All 3 books are great reads for anyone looking for a good read in Christian fiction, but whose standards may be higher than many of the so called christian fiction out there today. These are the books you want to pass on down to your children, nieces, nephews, grandchildren, and anyone who loves to read a good clean book.

Michael Row Your Boat Ashore
Published in Hardcover by Xlibris Corporation (2000)
Author: George E. Furnival
Amazon base price: $31.99
Average review score:

Another '60's flashback
Furnival's book, Michael Row Your Boat Ashore,is testimony to the new reality of worthy titles being offered by the print on demand publishers such as Xlibris. This story like Philip Reiss' Time Echo, also published by Xlibris, will compel folks who still remember the events of the 'Sixties, like they were just yesterday,to enjoyable ruminations. Sub-plot transitions are not as smooth as they could be and there are, perhaps, too many new minor character introductions made rather hurriedly
which tend to take away from keeping things moving along
seamlessly. However, the ideas and issues presented to construct compelling characters works well and facilitates this novel's
originality. One should put this down as a must read.

After reading George Furnival's Michael Row Your Boat Ashore, one
can't help but conclude that all the story telling talent out
there is not being recognized by the major publishers these days.
