A Frustrating Read!
I can appreciate the fact that the authors of this book have done their homework, and have done it well. BUT, too often the chapters get too bogged down in detail rather than move on to the next story. True enough, if you are a fan of strange phenomena that takes place on the sea, this is an excellent book. But again, it's weighed down with far too much detail to the point of getting lost. I could'nt, no matter how hard I tried, get through it--so I eventualy gave up and put it down after the second chapter.

Interesting discussion of different sea disasters, but....
The book Lost at Sea is a very good work that deals with different mysteries related to the sea. It gives very detailed accounts of disasters like the sinking of the Titanic, Lusitania, UB-65, Thrasher and many others. In addition to telling the stories of these and other lost ships, it also goes into a very detailed discussion of paranormal events associated with each disaster. The authors take each paranormal event (like ghost ship sightings and premanitions) and they intensely scrutinize the event. There is no doubt that the authors have done their research, but most of the main chapters are bogged down with long naratives on why the event was not a paranormal event. Though their conclusions seem correct it would be nice if a book about the paranormal actually had events in it that the authors believed to be paranormal. Their research should be commended, but the long proofs that they present are often very tedious and I was left wanting to hear more about the disaster and the legends. It doesn't bore you to the point of putting the book down, but as I said I was left wanting to move onto the next chapter.
For a person that is interested in a variety of sea disasters the final chapter of the book will certainly entertain you. In this chapter several ships are discussed (like the Athenia, Queen Mary, Pathfinder, Amphion etc) and the reader gets just a few pages on what the ship was, what happen, and what paranormal activity went along with the incident. There is a little bit of a discussion on whether the events were really paranormal or not, but the discussion is far shorter than what is found in the the main body of the book.
All in all I would recomend this book to almost anyone. If you like legends and stories of lost ships, read this book. Just be ready for a few slow discussions on the paranormal.

SOLID INTRIGUING
a faboulous peice of research. much better than those done by other writers. these are men who know there stuff,a truly great read. this is a must read for all those interested in the paranormal. thanks.

the incomplete reference
to start, I am a crystal developer who is responsible for putting reports on our sales intranet, and I bought this book thinking it could help me with the new version of Crystal. To be fair, the book does a good job of showing you how to create simple reports. Unfortunately, it never moves far beyond that and is not really deserving of the title "complete reference".

Once you get through the basic material on report design, the chapters on distributing reports through the web, ASP, etc. are weak and the sections on other languages are worse-- the code examples are similiar to the projects that come with the product itself. And probably the worst part of it all, is a MAJOR chunk of the book refers to the previous versions of the product (including Crystal Enterprise 8.5, NOT 9) and outdated features with a disclaimer of "this hasn't been released yet, so here is the old stuff". Why would I buy a book with "version 9" on the cover, when it uses filler material from the previous version? It is a sad attempt to bulk up the page count and make you think you were getting something you are not. So in total, if I could rip the book in half, I would keep the first section and throw out the other half. It is still a good reference for report design, but not much else.

Excellent Book for All Crystal Users
Crystal Reports has become the leading database report-writing tool. George Peck has become its leading evangelist. This book is the fourth and the best in his "Complete Reference" series. In previous editions he did a credible job of teaching us how to use Crystal's features to create nifty reports. While this edition has many of the same chapter titles, the content has been revised not only to reflect the new features in Version 9 but also to make the chapters easier to read. The concepts almost leap off the page.

Crystal Reports 9 is a major revision of the software product. There are multiple editions and many ways of implementing the results in an application and on the web. Peck addresses all these and provide a guide through the confusing array of choices. Most importantly, Peck provides an independent view of the offerings. He is not a cheerleader. His in-depth experience with the product in the real world is evident as he shows us alternative uses for the product and ways to implement it.

Most people will not read the book from cover to cover. Much like a dictionary, you will look for the topic of interest a read a section or a chapter. The book provides an index, a detailed table of contents and a summary table of contents to help.

The book is written in a direct person-to-person style. Peck suggests situations in which "you" may find yourself and then shows you how to find a solution. Peck's sense of humor shines through in many places. Most of the book is an easy read.

If you use Crystal Reports, you need this book.

George Michael's Secrets for Beautiful Hair
Published in Hardcover by Doubleday (1981)
Author: George Michael
Amazon base price: $19.95
Average review score:

He Won't Tell His Secrets
I have 37 inches of shiny, healthy hair, and this book was very little use to me. Although the book is easy to read, I believe many of the ideas could actually be harmful to your hair (There are whole chapters on bleaching and permanents.) There is some very basic, common sense advice in the book (eat right, keep the sun off of your hair)but they are lost in a sea of pseudo-science and anecdotes. The author dresses-up his opinions with scientific sounding jargon, but does not present real evidence to justify his claims. He continually refers to his "training as a medical doctor in Russia," but he is not a doctor. Not that doctors really know anything about long hair-care, anyway. He tells a lot of long-winded stories to support his claims: "Try this 'laboratory' test yourself...take a poodle dog, and shave one leg...He will begin to drop the hair on the other leg." (p 121) As a dog groomer with 8 years experience, I consider this a rediculous assertion. He also does a lot of self-aggrandizing name-dropping, and the majority of the long hair photos in the book are credited to Clarol Incorporated, not George Michael. The sections on styling don't really help you to control your hair, although they may give you some ideas if you already know how to style your hair. In sum, although it was easy to read, this book was really a waste of time.

Great guidance for long haired women or wannabes
The guru of long hair, George Michael comes through with this book of guidance and inspiration for anyone trying to get their hair to look its best, be its healthiest and reach its maximum length.

A Groundbreaking Book
George Michael is a trained doctor (plastic surgeon) who received his medical degree in Russia. His mother and aunts all had gorgeous long hair and he was always fascinated by long hair care. In fact, he wrote his medical school thesis on hair care and was ridiculed by his professors - at first. No one had ever viewed hair care in a medical sense before and he received an "A" for his groundbreaking work.

Dr. Michael came to the U.S. after World War II and decided to pursue hair care full time. In fact, this year is the 45th anniversary of the George Michael salon on Madison Avenue in NYC. (Today, there are thousands of George Michael long hair salons throughout the world.)

Dr. Michael created his own system for long hair care and put all of his knowledge in this book, which was published in 1981.
That was 20 years ago. Much of the information continues to stand up, while other info has passed with the times. However, this book was groundbreaking and is a classic. In my opinion, it's a "must have" for anyone interested in long hair care.

IT Policies & Procedures: Tools & Techniques That Work

Disappointed reader
I was not at all pleased once I received the book at the full purchase price. I was expecting more formal policies already written. The ones included in the book are very broad and most likely unuseful in their current format to most any business. I recommend that you get the book, but do not pay the full price for it. Find it used.

Expected more...
I expected more from this book - at least some concrete, document examples (verbage) on tailoring IT policies. Readers should look here for an overview but elsewhere for mor e detail.

IT director
This book did a very good job filling in some gaps in my
knowledge of running an IT operation. This book is very
helpful for technical people who find themselves now having
to manage an IT department. Policies and procedures are very
important in making an IT shop run smoothly, and this book
will give you a head start in getting your shop in order.

Verbose and EXTREMELY boring
I am a fourth year neuroscience major and found this book to be extremely verbose and boring. The chapters are 50 pages long at least and the author continually digresses into random tangents so you're left bored and confused at the end of each chapter. Do NOT buy it unless you want to be even more confused in your course than necessary!

very thorough
I agree with other reviewers that this is not best suited as an introductory textbook; however it seems to work fine as a source of information for the student who has already taken intro psychology. There is a lot of terminology, but everything seemed to be very well explained. We did note an error or two. Overall I think this book is great.

Best overall for Cogntive Neuroscience
I have used it in an upper division undergraduate psychology class, and in my students' rankings of textbooks, this book has consistently been ranked higher than any other text I've used.

The level is beyond a simple introductory psychology text, but is very appropriate for the upper division course.

The numerous full-color illustrations and photographs are especially helpful in illustrating key points.

It covers the full spectrum of the neural basis of cognition, from simple perception through the biology of emotion to the basis of consciousness (with very interesting case studies of brain damaged patients throughout).

Collection of tabloid photos and random quotes. ABSURD!
This book is a complete absurd... It is nothing more than another attempt to cash-in on George Michael's recent situation by the people, who profit from gossips and heinous stories in the first place. This book is not official and using GM's name as one of the authors is simply criminal. Yes, it is a collection of quotes made by GM at various times, but... taken out of the content, they aim to work as yet another illustation of a weak and stupid pop-star, WHICH HE IS NOT. I believe that tabloid biz is the worst way (even prostitutes sell their own bodies as oppose to selling stories about other peoples' bodies) to make a living (and what a good living it must be), that is why I do not EVER buy tabloids. So, I am really angry that I was "tricked" into buying another version of a tabliod issue, conveniently called a "book by George Michael" himself. I DO NOT BLAME AMAZON.COM. AT LEAST, I COULD GET A REFUND, THANKS TO AMAZON.COM. It is the publishers, who should be ashamed of themselves!

Basic Media Quotes
this Book puts different things He has said over the years kinda all Scattered out.it's cool reading Respect that He has gotten from different Artists&Groups in the Business. His Battle was Legendary with Sony.it Inspired Prince for better or Worse.but that isn't mentioned here.He deserves a full book that highlights His Talent&Career in full detail.interesting overview here though on His Artistic Challenges&Influences.

fabulous
It was an excellent book; very informative. I read it over and over. Great pictures!

A Breed Apart a Tribute to The Hunting Dogs That Own Our Sou
I was inspired by the compilation of bird dog stories found within this book. If you enjoy the excitement, fear, despair, and elation associated with the training, ownership and running of all breeds of bird dogs, you will enjoy this book. The authors help you relive the moments you have endured with your own dogs in addition to helping you imagine the hunts you have yet to experience. This is a definite must read for bird dog enthusiasts.

For all dog lovers
I borrowed this book from a friend and had a tough time putting it down. Great stories from writers who truly love their dogs. A few of the essays are sad, but all of them allow us to share a part of a fellow dog lovers life with his best friend. Definitely a must read.

A great idea, careless and unprofessional execution
As a die hard Redskins fan, I was very sorry to see this excellent concept so badly muffed. The idea behind this book is to cash in on the Washington Post vault, providing great photos and articles combined with new pieces by long-time Skins beat reporters to tie it all together. Sadly, whoever edited and proofread this thing reeeally dropped the ball. Sentences at the bottom of the page are repeated at the top of the next, photographs are mislabeled, pieces of sentences are missing, words are chopped off in the middle. Probably still of some value for the die hard Skins fan, but a real black eye for the Washington Post. If their newspaper were produced as shoddily, Richard Nixon would have finished his second term.

not as bad as advertised
Yes, there are some typos and such in the early chapters but the book isn't as lousy as described in the 2-star review. Most of the problems are hyphen-ated words that are not at the end of a page or line. It is like the typeset was changed but the book was not reproofed.

Still, there is a lot of good information in the book. I think it covers items that Loverro's book (very good as well) ignored or glossed over-- how Gibbs wanted to sign and trade Riggo and how Joe Jacoby ended up sticking around in that first camp. The Times summary makes it sound like Gibbs and Beathard were geniuses building a team. This book shows that they were also lucky geniuses. If you are a Skins fan, you should own this book.

I see there is also a newer edition out with the Synder years (ugh).

Buried Mistakes

"Mistakes," or lack of interest?
Were the police truly interested in catching the murderer of Candy Short? BURIED MISTAKES, the true-crime account of the slaying of an unrenowned small-town girl, asks that crushing, rhetorical question. Ultimately a hard-working detective, coming out of retirement, reviewed the "unsolved" case and proceeded to nab the culprit, the victim's husband. Was it that detective's own family-violence childhood that drove him to catch a wife-beating killer? BURIED MISTAKES author Michael Kaplan seems to ask: Is justice enough cause to motivate us to do the right thing, or must there be a personal stake in the issue?

Living in Community is the real solution
Finally a book about Y2K that offers real answers. The real answer to the Y2K problem exists in living in community and taking care of one another. I appreciated the fact that the authors did not dwell on the "event," but related the story of people in relationships dealing with the problem. Our friends will be around much longer than Y2K (whether it's a real problem or not).

Readers looking for in-depth prognostications, new realms of worry, or technical data will be disappointed, but this is a novel, not a computer magazine article. There are plenty of other sources for technical information (including Michael Hyatt's other book).

I appreciated the classical allusions to Homer and the philosophy of the work as a whole. It's a bit quirky in spots, but in an endearing way. I would certainly recommend this book, especially as a non-threatening way to get friends thinking about and preparing for the new millennium.

A great novel that depicts Y2k as a spotty, varied outcome!
This is the Y2k novel by the author of The Millennium Bug: How to Survive the Coming Chaos. I have read this book and highly recommend it. It provides a contrast to the doomsday outcome novels--it envisages spotty, varied outcomes, more along the line I envisage. Furthermore, it brings to play some very interesting historical and philosophical perspectives that were presented in very well done fashion. The story was, of course, exciting. Get the book!

Real Fiction...Not Just a Technical Manual
Michael Hyatt is a well-known computer expert. George Grant is a less well-known, but very prolific writer. Unexpectedly, the two combine their prodigious talents in what is very heady fiction--this is a novel, not just a sneaky excuse to make hay on the Y2K crisis. If you like literary allusions (check out the Homeric paralells), lots of philosophy (G.K. Chesterton nods abound), and a genuine painterly touch (the writing is gorgeously evocative) you will want this book. Techies who merely want info dumping may be disappointed--as will Y2K alarmists. But thinking readers will delight in this fiction masterpiece.
