best
This is probably the best Unicorn Club.We all know that richie Lila Fowler is actually abit sad because her dad is working constantly. As she struggles to get her father to give her his TIME and not just his MONEY she also rebels and goes really wild. She throws an out of control party...and is chasing after an older boy who thinks she is just a cute kid...

Friends are forever
I think this book was o.k. I like it because it's about friends, but I don't like it cause it dosen't have very much action. It's about a girl that hardly ever gets to see her father. If you like boks about friends you will lkie this book.

How good it is
This book is when Lila Fowler finally realizes that her rich father really isn't paying much attention to her.Lila tries everything to try and get Mr.Fowler to notice her.Doing that, she also tries to get cute,ninth-grader Jimmy Lancer to go out with her-permanently.Her plans for Jimmy Lancer fails when she goes as far as throwing a huge party at her house.Lila finds out that Jimmy and another girl have been dating and Jimmy only thought of her as a little sister. To add to her anger her father comes home early from his business trip, only to find Lila's party. He's furious and that night he realizes that he's been paying no attention to his daughter

A Sociological Study of a Costan Rican House of Prostitution
La Casa de Lila presents the results of a sociological study done in a Costa Rican house of prostitution for male homosexuals. Lila's house is a rather particular center. Most of the clients are older men who seek out young boys; some of the prostitutes are as young as 10. The prostitutes are "cacheros" a term describing men who provide sexual services for homosexuals but consider themselves as either straight or bisexual. They have girlfriends, wives and many of them have children. Most have problems with alcohol, crack cocaine and gambling. It is the necessity for money to support these activities that motivates their work.

The book's main focus is the question of sexual identity. How do a group of heterosexual men deal with the reality that their livelihood depends upon prostituting themselves with other men? Schifter concludes that sexual identity is determined by power relations and not by what one does and with whom. Men are dominant, women are submissive. One can be dominant (masculine) while sodomizing another man; the person sodomized becomes feminine. Sex expresses the social dynamic of male oppression.

Schifter's team interviewed 25 prostitutes (aged 13 to 27) during the first half of 1997. Lila, the (male) homosexual, who runs the house was also interviewed and the investigators obviously spent time observing the activities at the casa. Schifter is a prominent AIDS and gay rights activist in Central America. While I find that some of his other work is nearly impossible to read, this book is quite readable. [I should note that I read the Spanish edition of La Casa de Lila. ]

Clients were not interviewed in this book and this is a major weakness. Schifter recognizes that the stories told by the cacheros were not very accurate. I would have appreciated greater detail on exactly how the house functioned. What time did it open? How did clients come? How were the cacheros scheduled? What exactly did they do? It might have helped to describe in detail a few days in the life of one of the cacheros. There was no information on venereal diseases among the prostitutes, the relationship of the casa to the local police, government officials and a wealth of other topics that are of interest. This information might have served as a reality check on the interviews.

Despite these shortcomings, this book remains a well written and well researched study on the construction of a sexual identity among a very particular group of male prostitutes.

a wonderful book
Jacobo Schifter spent months conducting interviews inside a house of male prostitution in San Jose, Costa Rica to research this book. The result is a fascinating and consciousness-raising report, not only about male protitution, but about the Latin American sexual discourse in general--attitudes towards homosexuality (all of the prostitutes claim that they're straight and many seem to fear homosexuality), realtions between the sexes, awareness and practice of AIDS and safe sex, etc. Some of the interviews are reprinted in their entirety. The owner of the brothel, Lila, has a story worthy of a book itself. The most informed and interesting book on Costa Rican culture I have read.

Delightful illustrations and imaginative solution.
Good story line and delightful illustrations will make this book a popular storytime favorite. Shows how friendship grows and that problems can be solved by using your brains. Children would probably enjoy thinking up other adventures for Lila & Albert and their farmyard friends.

loved the charts...
The book's charts are fantastic! They give all the info women need to determine risk catagories and are the best part of the book. In very small print it says Rita Watson MPH designed them.

Dumb Like Me, Olivia Potts

It's a good read
Fifth-grader Olivia Potts feels like nobody special. She can't compare to her smart, poetry-writing sister or her Yale University attending brother. Olivia makes friends with the new girl in town, Anita. When someone steals the license plates off Anita's parents' car, it's just the first of many strange events that Olivia is determined to get to the bottom of. As she solves the mystery, she learns maybe she is smart after all. It's a good story and has a lot of nice lessons about acceptance. Olivia is a very realistic heroine. I'm sorry this is out of print. I read it (more than once) when I was a kid and really enjoyed it.

Being Fat in America
If you are ever curious about how it feels to be a fat female in America then you must read this book. It is the fourth in a series of books which outline the trials and tribulations that an overweight teenage girl suffers, e.g. tauntings by her peers, feeling friendless and endlessly counting calories and dieting. In this book, Glenda, the overweight teenager, strikes up a friendship with another obese female and they decide to enlist Glenda in the wonderful world of plus size modeling. There are many humorous scenes involving Glenda's debut as a runway model(in one mishap she manages to bump into a skinny model and almost knock her into the front row of the audience) and the author inserts some incisive commentaries on how cruel and superficial many American teenagers and adults can be when the issue concerns someone's appearance and weight.

This one keeps your mind open...
A neatly plotted story complete with well-drawn characters, this is a satisfying read. The subject is mystical, which may put off some readers, but stick with it and keep an open mind. I found that the tale popped into my head again and again long after I closed the cover and put the book down. I'm glad to see this author branching out from the technical books she has previously published. I'll buy the next one out.

A collection of stories shows a great variety of tale types
These Italian stories do not duplicate stories told us in other collections of Italian fairy tales. "The Quest of the Bird with the Golden Tail" sounds like other titles I have read, but the story itself varied from the usual. While it had many motifs you find in quest stories (7 years, iron shoes, ogresses, Winds, beautiful gowns in nutshells, 3 nights of pleading for the prince to hear her story)--still we feel this story is a step away from the usual.

In a legend, "The Legend of the White Chamois," a boy--an excellent hunter--follows the White Chamois and embarks on a deadly race to keep the Chamois from reaching the flame-coloured rhododendrons that could renew his strength. The boy finally plunges to his death from one of the precipices, but the White Chamois destroys his whole village anyway.

A variety of tales are told in this volume (first printed in 1920).

Yuck!
I asked for and received this cookbook last Christmas after I saw it on a cooking show. I was so excited to try it out! So far, I've tried 5 of the recipes and have been thoroughly disappointed. I think the other person who wrote a review for this book must have been paid to do so by the author or publisher! Please do yourself a favor and don't waste your money on this one! I'm throwing mine away...

One of my favorites
This is a cookbook with some of my favorite easy dinner dishes. I love to make dinner in the morning (or on another day) and just heat in the afternoon for dinner. I've tried a lot of the recipes and have been disappointed in only one. This is one of four cookbooks I use regularly.

Simply Good!
Super simple casserole dishes! Also, super tasty. I loved it and use its recipies a lot. Great buy here.
