Comanche Dictionary and Grammar (Summer Institute of Linguistics, Publications in Linguistics, #92)
Published in Paperback by Summer Inst of Linguistics (1991)
Authors: Lila Wistrand Robinson and James Armagost
Amazon base price: $26.00
Average review score:

I'm not aware of a better Comanche language dictionary.
When I first received this dictionary I immediately began to look up several words my grandmother had told me. I was able to locate them easily even though the Comanche spelling scheme uses several peculiar characters (e.g. my grandmothers spelling of "posa tibo" was found under "po?sa taiboo?"). Since then I have used this book as a reference on a daily basis. It is an invaluable resource and a "must have" for any serious student of the language.

This Dictionary is based on the research of the late Elliot Canonge, who is well known to Comanches for his work during the fifties and sixties. That work resulted in Comanche Texts (1958), several beginning Comanche readers, and a collection of Comanche hymns. Canonge's research for this dictionary was checked in consultation with fluent speakers of Comanche and is probably the most comprehensive source available today.

The grammar section at the back of the book is difficult to follow and apparently intended for the professional linguist. I believe a much simpler explanation of Comanche syntax to be possible, but that is really a minor criticism.

Surveys different customs about death and funerals
Dying To Know isn't likely to be on the school curriculum per se, but kids ages 12 and older will find it suitable for both leisure browsing and supplemental reports as it surveys different customs about death, funerals, and final resting places. Black and white photos pepper the presentation.

i loved it
This was one of the sweetest books that I have read. Lila is the oldest of seven children. Their mother has died and she is responsible for their welfare because their dad is a drunk. She meets daniel, the town doctor, and with each meeting, their feelings for each other grow. Its nice to know that they overcame the obstacles that prevented them from being together. The only unrealistic part of the novel was that Daniel was willing to take on all of her brothers and sisters(six of them) plus the other children they want to have. All in all, it was a sweet book.

It's a mysterious book.
This is a very good story. The second half of the book is mysterious. Jessica and Elizabeth go to Lila's party. They listen about a ghost story. Is it a true story?

An action packed historical novel
When the colonies revolt against England to establish what would become the United States of America, fifteen year old Lorenzo Bannister joins a secret flatboat operation delivering desperately needed medicine and gunpowder to George Washington's army in Lorenzo's Secret Mission. From the docks of New Orleans to the battlefields of the American Revolution, young readers will become deeply engrossed in this story of wartime travel up the Mississippi and Ohio rivers, the horrors of slavery and of combat. An action packed historical novel, Lorenzo's Secret Mission is enthusiastically recommended reading for children -- especially those with an interest in learning about the contributions of the Spanish to the success of the Americans against the British in an epic struggle for emancipation and the founding of a new nation.

A third grader loved reading about Molly Picon's life.
This book is subtitled "A Gift of Laughter". It is written for young readers, which I am, but my mother also enjoyed learning about Molly's life. Molly had a really great spirit. She always went "on with the show", from getting engaged on stage to her manager/director husband to taking up roller skating at age 50 for a musical celebration of her 25 years in Yiddish Theater. Even when things went wrong, she always made people happy. The most important lesson she taught was laughter and excitement. Even when on the small screen, instead of her beloved live theater, she communicated her vivacity and generous spirit. When people had forgotten how to laugh after the rampage of the Holocaust, even children who were born never having heard laughter or experiencing joy, Molly was able to transmit a love of life and hopefulness through her heartfelt performances. She was blessed with a long productive life, still giving live concert performances, doing deep knee-bends and cancan twirls in her mid-seventies. Molly left an indelible impression in the hearts and minds of her audiences, inspiring many to enroll in her concerns for the State of Israel, the Yiddish Language and Yiddish Theatre. Molly Picon made a movie with Barbra Streisand in 1973 called For Pete's Sake. Although the book doesn't say it, and it was published in 1990, I think Barbra stole Molly's famous Yiddish story from her play and later movie, Yiddle with a Fiddle, to use as the basis for Streisand's Yentel character and movie that came out in 1983. I wonder why there is no mention of this in the book, and also why Barbra does not credit Molly's inspiration for her performance. I loved the book because it felt like Molly was really talking about herself to me. I felt many feelings about myself when reading about Molly's life and choices. I like a book when I can relate to the main character and when that character contributes to my life. I recommend this book to anyone that wants to be an actor when they grow up, and to grownups who need a little laughter. I am inspired to read more about Molly and to watch all the films that she made.

Learn More When You Want It Most
I first read this book about six months ago. I found it through a search at my Milwaukee Public Library. After looking at about 10 books I found this very comprehensive with a good glossary and index.

We women think we have read and understand osteoporosis until some one close to you has been found to have the disease and the comments are this is the worst I have ever seen. This from an 85 year old woman who raised chickens and sold eggs on a farm up until 30 years ago and then retired to town. It is not believed that any Dr. recommended that she take calcium or any other preventitive measure. In fact she fell 18 months ago breaking a wrist and no one even thought to do a bone scan at that time. Thanks to my sister-in-law she demanded a bone scan prior to surgery to replace a knee.

This book discusses medicine and what you need to do - exercise and medication to turn the bone density around. Up until reading this I had no idea that the density could be reversed. I also see this in other recent conference notes etc.

We ordered this book for all of my mother-in-laws sons and today I am sad to say that my sister, who also has spent all of her life on a farm has osteoporosis and part of a blind osteoporosis 10 year study (she is not going to participate any longer as she feels she will be to busy getting well,) at a pretty high level so I am ordering the book for her.
