donovan adds wit and verve to rainbow fish
Gail Donovan has brought new wit and verve to the Rainbow Fish
series with this delightful book! My young son and I both
enjoyed the humor and drama of this undersea glimpse into a
'school' of fish and other sea creatures who reveal their
personalities-- familiar to anyone who's ever been to any
sort of school!-- through a wittily rendered session of
Show and Tell. Donovan's gentle humor and perfect ear for
both 'teacher-speak' and genuine kid voices make this book
one that can truly be enjoyed by both young readers and their
parents. I hope Donovan will continue to make Rainbow Fish
shine!

Entertaining, with good lessons
After 4 fish discuss stealing, Tug alone decides to do it. This leads to his being lost. Because his "buddy" fish isn't paying attention, Tug's disappearance isn't noticed until the end of the trip. This story is entertaining for kids, but it can also be used to teach several lessons about honesty, obedience, saftey and thinking of others. It also has beautiful artwork.

Richly sensuous
This is a lovely piece of travel writing about the Island of Rhodes by a master observer of both the human character and the land- and seascapes with which Greece and its islands always delight us. It is a richly sensuous account of Durrell's years in the British civil service just after the end of WWII and just before the island is handed back to Greece. The eye is feted with descriptions of fields, hills, oranges and lemons, and flowers of every form and color. Sounds range from the rhythm of the sea (alternately savage and soothing) to Greek folk songs to sparkling conversation with Brit expatriates (including Gideon the half-sighted wonder). The author even offers a neat summation of a Greek picnic in tems of smells: petrol, garlic, wine and goat. Intermingled with these delicious attacks on the senses there is the play of light over the island as the sun moves across the sky and its rays are filtered through sea mist, mythology and the grim reality of having to rebuild a nation and an island after Nazi cruelty has left it a shambles. Like it or not, the reader is filled in on some mildly interesting points in the author's understanding of ancient history and the medieval Knights of St. John, who came into possession of the island for a time. The last section is about an enormous cookout in honor of a saint at whose shrine miracles have been know to occur, even raising the dead. It is a stroke of irony that during the festivities a young child is run over by a truck and dies the following day despite the best efforts of Mills, a good hearted but overextended British doctor. All in all, this is a delightful book, highly recommendable for those who enjoy travel writing. But Durrell is no Rebecca West, and this is not an example of the best Durrell. But it isn't bad Durrell, either.

UNDER THE SEA FROM A TO Z
I really enjoyed this book !!!!!!!! It was very interesting. The pictures looked as if you were really under water with the aminals. It gave such great details. The words were very well thought out, becasue a child could understand them, but it was not a book that adults would not like.

An absolute must for any Marine or CW buff !
Mr. Sullivan presents a unique style of writing, which incorporates a large volume of historical fact into an easily readable format. He goes in depth into the who, what, when, where, why, and how of the United and Confederate States Marines during the war of rebellion while bringing you close to the personalities and motivations you won't get from a text book. A truly readable, in-depth picture of the Marines and the Naval conflict during this crucial period in the formation of the United States we know today!

outstanding overview of how weather works
This book presents the fundamental physics which makes weather happen and then presents the reader with the tools with which to make weather predictions based on local observations using this physical model. But it's more than simply a book for boaters far at sea who must rely on their own analysis of weather patterns. It's also very useful as part of a larger understanding of science. Every branch of science tends to have a small number of very important concepts which form a model of how things work. This whole group of models from different disciplines very often can be used to understand completely new complex systems that aren't yet well understood by any formal branch of knowledge. When you've learned enough of the models from different branches of science, you are able to understand complex system much better. This book contains one of those models of scientific knowledge which I've found useful in a general sense.
