Personal recommendation
Very informative with lots of "inside" info. The appendix is packed with extra information and I found it nearly as useful as the book itself. Nice to see a book on this subject written without resorting to dramatics. The author's use of case histories where he was actually involved makes for interesting reading and drives the point home. I find that I keep gleaning more information from the book each time I go through it. The distance learning idea is very handy and it will help my resume' as I intend to move up from deck level to management in the near future. Consider this a recommendation!

A recommendation from a Captain
I ran across this book after reading about it in a boating magazine. Having had some security related experiences of my own, I felt a great interest in viewing the info firsthand. I was apprehensive about purchasing a book on CD at first..but gave it a try anyway. I came to realize that by having this type info on CD, it becomes a valuable resource with easy access. I can print the info I need to do my vessel security checks and not have to lug around a complete book. The material and subject matter was excellent. I never thought so deep into this subject, but Kellerman obviously has. The only slight negative aspect of this book is that it needs some more pictures...other than that I can give it a Bristol rating. Give it a shot, I think it is info that any Captain should have if he or she wants to secure their vessel or someone elses. Thanks....

An excellent, well-integrated book
"An excellent, well-integrated book that ranges from marine viruses to filamentous cyanophyceans and treats the processes mediated by them. The aerobic heterotrophic bateria in the open ocean and the biogeochemcial role of the assemblages are emphasized in most of the 16 chapters. The authors, none of them a 'pure' microbiologist but all attuned to biogeochemical questions, provide modern reviews of the basics, but ample space is given to open issues. About two-thirds of the very many references date from 1990 to 1999." --Karl Banse, University of Washington

Expert Review
"Microbial Ecology of the Oceans" presents timely and up-to-date reviews of various aspects of microbial ecology of the marine water column....Well-written and authoritative chapters should make it useful as a text for advanced courses and for graduate students. Altogether, I can warmly recommend it to anyone interested in microbial ecology and biological oceanography."

A very welcome contribution to Civil War studies
The United States Marine Corps In The Civil War: The Final Year opens with the elevation of Major Jacob Zellen to the commandant of the corps, over officers senior to him. This ended the policy of accession to that post by seniority and established the precedent of deep-selection. Civil War historian David Sullivan provides a complete account of the marines in the desperate, bloody fights at Mobile Bay, Honey Hill, Tulfinny Crossroads, and Fort Fisher. Active on all fronts during the last year of the war, marines also played a little-known role in the events surrounding the assassination of Abraham Lincoln. Sullivan concludes his invaluable, highly recommended and very welcome contribution to Civil War studies with a detailed refutation of the spurious, erroneous, and derogatory conclusions that have hitherto obscured the historical record of Marine Corps involvement in the American civil war.

OUTSTANDING!
If you are into Marine Corps history this book is a must. Marines have participated in every military conflict in U.S. history and the Civil War was one of them. Very enjoyable, and something new to learn. Semper Fidelis!

A Fresh View of Civil War History
This book is a must for civil war buffs and Marine history critics alike. It tells the truth of the History of the Marine Corps in the Civil War by relating the accounts of those who were there. Sullivan's 3 volume history was painstakingly researched over the course of 10 years. His history should be added to that taught by the Drill Instructors at the Marine Corps Recruit Depots. As the histories are taught now, it's as if the Marine Corps wasn't even there. Sullivan's work is excellent and pulls the reader along in a revealing light of one of the darkest chapters of our nations history.

My drill instructor was wrong--Marines were in the Civil War

Since the day after the first battle of Bull Run it was common knowledge that the U. S. Marine battalion was the first to cut and run from the battlefield, thereby causing the rout of the Union forces by the rebels. After 20 years of research that has uncovered new sources, David M. Sullivan proves that this stain on the battle flag of the Marines was a myth. Even the 90 day volunteer units had more training than the Marines, most of whom were recruited in the three weeks prior to the battle. They were essentially trained enroute to Manassas Junction. The young Marines were pushed back, four times, by superior and fresh forces. They rallied three of those times and re-entered the battle (equaling the record of any unit on the field that day).

This account is just one of dozens of similar stories that will give the Marine Corps the honor it deserves during the Civil War. Year by year, using official records, personal accounts and a myriad of sources he sets the record straight.

This is an epoch work by an outstanding researcher and a competent story teller. Must reading for all Marines, all friends of Marines and everyone that the Marines defend.

Worth Every Penny!
This book is an outstanding guide to the marine life found along the shores of the Pacific Northwest. Before I go further, I should note that it is NOT a pocket guide. But if you slip it into a daypack, you will be amply rewarded. Dr. Niesen has written a book that in very clear language helps you identfy what you are looking at, learn about its life habits, and learn about its habitat. Its emphasis on habitats, and arrangement by type of organism within each habitat, is extremely helpful. The black and white photos are usually pretty good, although sometimes dark, but the section of color plates is really good. What are really outstanding are the line drawings--David Wood, the artist, really captures the organisms in a way that brings out details yet preserves the basic nature of the organism.

The book also gives a great (meaning clear yet not too simple) introduction to marine biology for the Pacific Northwest, explaining tides, currents, the origin of the coast , and the basic biology of the major groups (taxa) of organisms. Furthermore, he provides tips on beachcombing.

All in all, a very handy reference. I will consider it for my Marine Biology class for non-majors (I'd use it with a majors course, too, if I taught one!).

Vashon Island memories of a Monster Clam
Growing up on Vashon Island an island just west of Seattle I have such fond memoroies of going with my Dad and Mom, older brother and later on friends, to dig this wonderful monster clam at the Burton Beach.

This book is a book that every Washington State citizen with pride should own and those of us who live out of state should own and share with our local libraries. The Washington state native americans named this clam and Goeduck means "dig deep" which is what you have to do to get this gem of a clam.

I have a pic on my website that shows just how hard it is. In fact digging goeducks is akin to hunting the big buck or elk. Hard to do and you don't always get your clam as they dig down faster than some can dig.

Great book!
