China's insecurity/ Mao's paper tiger !!
A rich and facinating account of how China made the decision to build the bomb. The origins of the Chinese nuclear program were made during the Eisenhower administration desion to reduce American troops in Korea. During this period, Eisenhower decided to increase American strategic forces (nuclear), thus adding to Chinese insecurity. According to the book, Mao wanted a paper tiger and the nuclear bomb was the answer.

The book also details how Soviet advisors provided the Chinese with baseline technical information for theroretical experimentation and fabrication of the first bomb. The book makes clear that the Sino-Soviet alliance was a shakey mutual military agreement at best. Moscow wanted total control of Soviet/Chinese military operations and how Chinese military leaders resisted these attempts by Moscow and decided to expel Soviet advisors. The book also explains how the CIA blew the call: They predicated a pultonium core and in fact the Chinese built a uranium-235 core.

A must for anyone interested in understanding American/Chinese Foreign policy in present day Chinese-Amercian relations

Energy Conscious Design: A Primer for Architects

Broad Coverage
This book, being prepared for the Commission of the European Communities, is concerned with the idea of the urban energy efficiency as a means to provide better environmental performance. Its simplified way of presenting fundamental concepts is very convenient. What I really liked the best is that it is filled with very nice and clear figures that are self-explanatory. However, these figures are not numbered!!!, which makes it hard to link them with the text. The book is very useful for architects and architectural students.

excellent analysis of the golf swing from the ground up
Ritson tries to demonstate the simplicity of the swing (one side pulls back, other side pulls through) but also provides discussion of more complex aspects of tweaking the swing for different situations. Lots of clear photos follow the text. Both beginners and more advanced golfers should find plenty of food for thought in this volume. Perhaps the best endorsement of this book would be this: I have shot two 80s in my life and both came on the morning following a full reading of this book. Hope it works for you.

A nicely illustrated, easy-to-read text
I'm not a student of this subject, but I have taken college courses in chemistry and one in biology. I think this book is an excellent introduction to the human body and it's functions, which is an incredibly fascinating subject. The authors provide an appropriate level of detail for an general, introductory texts. The narrative is supported by wonderful 3-D visuals as well as tables summarzing essential information.

Thumb Up from a Video Instructor
As a video instructor who has worked with students ages 8 and up, I found this book to be a good primer for junior high to adult students. It is filled with color photos demonstrating techniques and written in short easy to understand segments. It doesn't cover everything in detail, but gives enough information for beginners to improve their shooting style.

Good Look at USSR v. US post WWII
A good look at the history of relations between the Soviet Union and the United States in the period between WWII and the mid 1980's. Lack of information from Soviet sources (because they weren't available) a drawback, but good perspective from the NATO side.

The spiritual significance of myth via The Inklings writings
If you are a "fan" of the fantasy books by Tolkien, C.S.Lewis, Charles Williams or Chesterton, then this is a book worth reading. It is a collection of essays by various authorities in literature, myth and theology. A couple of the contributors were acquainted with either Tolkien or Lewis. The central thesis running through this collection of essays is that mythic symbols found in folk-tales and religious rituals, all express a common, fundamental human yearning for healing and a return to a "lost paradise". The essayists draw on insights from religious phenomenology, Jungian analysis, Christian theology and literary interpretation to tease out the potent mythic symbols found in the writings of Tolkien, Lewis, Chesterton and Williams. Lewis, Williams and Tolkien were associated with one another as drinking partners in an informal literary club known as The Inklings. The essayists "test" their thesis about the power of myth to reveal our search for meaning through the novels of the Inklings. The essayists take us a step further to consider the Christian world-view that informed and shaped the writings of Tolkien, Lewis, Williams and Chesterton. Although a couple of the essays are slightly "dated", any one interested in fantasy literature would find the thesis very absorbing. It should be useful not merely to students of english literature but also to the general reader who might like to know more about the backdrop to The Lord of the Rings, Narnia, etc. Certainly a book to add to your list for reading if you enjoyed the novels!

Reknown and experienced writers
This book is an excellent effort to compile several and relevant cases where the New Institutional Economics theory is explained through practical cases. The way in which each one of these cases is exposed, permits to see clearly the elements of this new economic thoery in the real world. Three characteristcs are prominent in this book. One, the cases show very diverse situations, which facilitates the understanding of this new theory in varied contexts. Two, in spite of that chapers are are short, which permits a easy and quick reading, they are supported in deep jobs of investigacion carried out by the authors. Three, the authors of this edition have different specific interpetaciones of this New Institutional Economics theory, which does a very valuable reading.

Related to this book, there is "Institutions, Institutional Change and Economic Performance by Douglas North, or Colonialism and Underdevelopment in East Africa : The Politics of Economic Change, 1919-1939 by E.A. Brett

Physics and Chemistry of the Solar System
Published in Hardcover by Academic Press (1995)
Author: John S. Lewis
Amazon base price: $69.95
Average review score:

A great book loaded with practical information.
Chapters: I. Introduction; II. Astronomical Perspective; III. General Description of the Solar System; IV. The Sun and the Solar Nebula; V. The Major Planets; VI. Pluto and the Icy Satellites of the Outer Planets; VII. Comets and Meteors; VIII. Meteorites and Asteroids; IX. The Airless Rocky Bodies: Io, Phobos, Deimos, the Moon, and Mercury; X. The Terrestrial Planets: Mars, Venus, and Earth; XI. Planets and Life about Other Stars; XII. Future Prospects; Appendices; Suggested Reading; Index

This book discusses the physics and chemistry of the Solar System in great detail. It assumes that the reader has completed one year of mathematics, physics, and chemistry at the university level. Appropriate physics and chemistry formulas and equations are sprinkled throughout the book. The focus is on practicality, not on rigorous derivation: Formulas are often introduced with a phrase like "It can be shown that...", though some key concepts are discussed in more math! ematical detail in the appendices. For the reader who wants more, the "Suggested Reading" section lists many more publications dealing with aspects of the subject matter of this book, ranging in intended readership between non-mathematical and professional scientific.

The text is informative and to the point. Inclusion of many results from recent space missions to various planets, asteroids, and comets is evident. The author includes many pictures (mostly in black and white) of (parts of) the planets and other discussed celestial bodies. Also included are a great number of plots and diagrams that illustrate points made in the text. Many provide specific information on characteristics of the materials being discussed. I particularly like these diagrams: A general discussion of, for instance, the different kinds of water ice is interesting in its own right, but the inclusion of a diagram where you can look up your own favorite combination of temperature and press! ure to find which kind of water ice exists under those cond! itions allows you to consider also many situations that are not explicitly treated in the text.

The book starts with a discussion that puts the Solar System in a wider astronomical context (involving galaxies and the universe at large), and ends (after extensive discussion of the members of the Solar System) with a discussion of the physics and chemistry of life and planets around other stars, and of the future prospects for answering remaining questions about our celestial neighbors. Some exercises are included at the end of each chapter.

The only negative point I found about this book is that it does not discuss the one topic I was looking for when I bought it: the physics of the shape of celestial bodies. For instance, why can Mars support much taller mountains that the Earth? How irregular can the shape be of a moon or asteroid, depending on its size? This certainly falls within the scope of the title. Nevertheless, the great wealth and practicality of the other i! nformation contained in this volume ensure that I do not at all regret buying it.

Sexual Harassment in Education

Authors: John F. Lewis and Susan C. Hastings
Amazon base price: $20.00
Average review score:

The Beginning
Lewis' book is a history and theory of the law of sexual harassment in education. The area has grown since the publication of this seminal work.

...

Since the Lewis book was published Title VII (and state human right acts) remains the cause of action for employees and Title IX has become the cause of action for students.

The book deserves an update.
