Definitive? Does that word have two meanings?
Calling this book definitive is laughable, unless definitive also means "incomplete, incorrect, and poorly presented!" I noticed SCORES of wartime photos that were not even included! The views that are presented are fuzzy, misidentified, misdated, and poorly interpreted. The only thing "definitive" about this book is that it is a definitive example of poor research and the wonton misuse of the photos and information of others. If this book is definitive, I cringe to think of what the author considers less-than that!

Not perfect but useful
"Gettysburg Battlefield", David Eicher's latest book isn't perfect. Some of the criticisms from other reviewers are justified but it does have its place in the mushrooming collection of titles on Gettysburg. While it doesn't replace William Frassanito's excellent photographic books, it performs a useful service for Gettysburg buffs by bringing a large number of old photographs from many sources together between two covers. Also, Eicher has added many photos he has taken himself which are helpful in identifying the present sites shown in the historical photographs. Its text does not rate its self-anointed accolade of "Definitive" and its maps of troop movements are not as clear as those found in many other books. Though the book is not up to Eicher's usual high standards, it does provide battlefield visitors with the convenience of having a great deal of helpful illustrative material in one volume.

Another superb book from Eicher.
David Eicher has struck gold again with his excellent new book, Gettysburg Battlefield. It contains noteworthy essays by eminent historians such as James McPherson, as well as a plethora of historical photographs which stand alongside modern photos of the same area. As is the case with his previous book, The Longest Night, this book deserves to be on the shelf of every Civil War buff.

Software stinks
I read it in a library and was excited b/c it came w/software to allow for practical application of geostats. I bought it b/c it seemed wrong to use the software w/o buying the book.
The publisher sent it to wrong address. When I finally got it the software for point pattern analysis didn't work [Ch3]. I wrote Wong, an author, about the bugs and he acknowledged problems. It was nice he responded, but I still wasted my money.
Also, the authors encrypted and embedded the scripts into seperate projects. This means if you already have a project open you have to load all of your data into their projects to use the software [when it works.]

TOO ENVIRONMENTALIST...NO MYSTERY!
I was surprised at this book. Unlike the rest of the series, it appears to have no mystery, except to find out what appears to be polluting the environment near the Bobbseys hometown. I expected a mystery, not a book devoted in entireity to environmentalism! The twins decide to clean up the river in their hometown, and their dog Chief follows, and gets poisoned somehow. They suspect a few people, but then they find something suspicious in the river, and the book goes in an environmentalist craze after that. Give me a break! I hear about and see enough Environmentalist shows and books. Besides, this was supposed to be a mystery! It wasn't! Save your money for the rest of the series, which is VERY GOOD, and has an actual mystery to it!

Not Very Informative
My mother was recently diagnosed, and I bought this book hoping it would be an informative summary of treatment methods, statistics, and coping strategies. Unfortunately, it is not. It contains pretty much the same general information that can be found on the American Cancer Society web site, and I would recommend the National Cancer Institute's PDQ service for much more comprehensive clinical information. Also, my mother's oncologist provided several pamphlets that were just as good or better on treatment side effects and coping strategies. As far as I can tell, this book's main merit is its case studies, all of which have positive outcomes. These may give patients more hope. However, the price of the book is a little steep if that's all one gets from it. I would recommend that patients and families do their own research: it's more empowering, it's free, and the information is better.
