Detroit Photo History
Images of America, Detroit, Michigan is small snap shot of live in Detroit Michigan. It is not extensive in its coverage but represents typical scenes from the era from 1860 to 1899. It's 128 pages gives a feeling for some of the live style that was going on during this time period.

If you are looking for someone special, it is unlikely that you will find them in this book. You will find what the architecture looked like and how the people dressed. You will find examples of the modes of transportation and the types of commerce.

This book helps to fill in some of the culture of the period. Most of the time when you are looking for genealogy information you find nothing but dates, names and places. This book helps to fill in some of the history that was taking place at the time.

I would recommend this book to anyone who is looking for a general snap shot of the era.

Easier than the Bowne Redbook
As a new corporate finance attorney, I love using this book from my Securities Regulation class versus the standard issue Bowne redbook. With the friendlier font and more manageable weight, I would stick with this and just consult your law firm's red book to be sure the regulation hasn't been changed during the year.

Elfwyn's Saga
One fateful day, far to the north, two ships of the northmen are bound toward the greenest valley in the land. One contains Anlaf Haraldsson , his wife Gudrun, and his weary seamen. The other transports Gorm the Grim, a fierce and vengeful beserker and his crew of angry warriors. The hidden folk, those who live only in dreams aid the good Anlaf. But when they see Gorm mercilessly pursuing, they becalm his ship and hold him back. As Gorm frothed with rage that the hidden folk had aided Anlaf, he carved evil runes into a boulder overlooking the valley. The runes were meant to bring sorrow and blight to Anlaf and his kin. The child of Anlaf and Gudrun, Elfwyn, is born blind due to the corrupt influence of the runes. The hidden folk see her plight and bestow upon her a second sight. However, Gorm returns this time bringing a "Gift" of a giant crystal. As Anlaf and his tribe stare into it, they see visions of dreams unattainable and are filled with discontent. Under the power of the crystal the tribe grows foolish. Their only hope for salvation is young Elfwyn, protected from the crystal by her blindness. With time ticking down as Grom prepares to invade, Elfwyn must find a way to not only save herself, but all that she holds dear.

The illtrations are astounding, and this book will hold you firm

Good information, but same as previous editions
This books offers a good overview of feature writing for both magazines and newspapers. However, when I compared the first edition of this text (1988) with the current 4th edition, I noticed very little difference, other than a huge price increase. Some of the book has been updated, but the sections that are aren't too relevant or useful. Thus, if you have the original edition of this otherwise fine text, don't bother to buy the newer version--it's nearly identical.

The Fire Curse and Other True Medical Mysteries
Published in Hardcover by Walker & Co (1994)
Author: David Lee Drotar
Amazon base price: $14.95
Used price: $4.20

A fascinating exploration of unique medical mysteries
Imagine finding the legs of a woman, still in nylons and shoes, but with the torso totally gone -- burned to a small pile of ashes. What could possibly have caused this? It is totally illogical and defies rational explanation, yet it happened. This phenomenon, known as the fire curse or spontaneous human combustion, is just one of a number of absolutely fascinating but true medical mysteries explored by David Drotar in The "Fire Curse and Other True Medical Mysteries." According to the author, there are over 200 documented cases of this strange medical phenomenon (a number of black and white photos are included). So how does part of a human body turn into ash and leave another part not even singed? Drotar doesn't come up with any conclusive evidence, but he does present well-researched theories in this and the other cases he describes. Among the other unsolved mysteries he carefully explores are how people can walk on fire, why 140 Asian men have mysteriously died in their sleep since 1977, and why some dogs can predict epileptic seizures before they occur. This is one of those special books that are great for sharing between parents and middle school or high school aged kids -- attention getting and almost quaranteed to get some good, thought-provoking dialogue going. Definitely recommended.

great recipes I can stay home and eat good food now.
This book gives a good range of some favorite Singaporean dishes. The recipes are easy to follow and are fantastic to suprise the family with on those special nights. I have always been in awe of good chefs and although I will need many more years of cooking to be good, this book gives those of us a hand at making some exquisite meals, without running down to the local restaurant.

Excellant book on self-defence
This book gives a complete overview of hapkido basics as well as a total self-defense course that can be used with ANY martial art system. I bought my copy in 1979 and at the time it was the best book on the market. It's a good resource for self-defence skills for men and women. Applications cover punches, grabs, clubs and dis-advantaged positions. Plenty of pictures to show each technique. Well worth getting for your collection, if you can find a copy.
