Up To Date Doctors Get Along and Offer Comprehensive Advice
Knowledge about fibroids and available treatment options has been changing rather rapidly. This book is clearly the most accurate and up to date at the present time (2003). In a changing field, accurate and up-to-date are critically important. That alone, makes Goodwin/Broder a must-read for any woman dealing with fibroids.

This book is well documented, giving citations chapter by chapter - so the reader has some idea what information came from which sources, and can refer to those sources should she wish.

It is very heartening to see an Interventional Radiologist (Goodwin) and a Gynecologist (Broder) COOPERATING to provide COMPLETE information about fibroids in ONE book. Too frequently, these two branches of medicine appear to be competing with one another, even trying to discredit one another, on issues relating to fibroids and treatment of fibroids. There are treatments for fibroids which involve each of these doctor's specializations. Together these two authors make it possible for women to consider the options based on the knowledge of doctors who support what is best for the PATIENT rather than what is best for the individual doctor's ego or pocketbook. This book does that and does it splendidly well. Broder and Goodwin together set out both the pluses and minuses of the various available treatments and what's appropriate when - regardless of whose specialty each treatment lies within.

The authors even cover what's known about treatments of the future including some currently in clinical trials. Goodwin and Broder also discuss lifestyle changes, suggest ways to implement some of them, and what effects one might or might not realistically expect from such changes. The book is rational rather than emotional.

Although this book is written by doctors, it is clear, concise, easy to comprehend and complete. It is not preachy. It does not talk down to the reader. These authors understand their audience and are able to effectively communicate needed information.

A GREAT READ
This is an informative, easy to read book which reveals important information we need to know. It puts the fear we may have into perspective and was very helpful.

A Very Helpful and Insightful Book
This book was very helpful. I have fibroids and my doctor told me to have a hysterectomy. I am glad I read this book. It gave me a better understanding of my condition. I finished this book with an understanding of my diagnosis and armed with some questions to ask my doctor and a feeling that I was taking charge of my situation. Thank you, thank you , thank you.

Bipolar Disorder: Family-Focused Treatment Approach, A
Published in Hardcover by Guilford Press (12 September, 1997)

A prequel to the Bipolar Disorder Survival Guide?
This book preceded Miklowitz's very popular "Bipolar Disorder Survival Guide". The question then arises: should you buy this book as well? I think the answer is yes. This book puts forth the family-focused treatment approach, and in doing so supplements the information in the "Bipolar Disorder Survival Guide", which is more so directly about patients suffering from the disorder. Furthermore, this book is very well written and organized, and focuses upon a perhaps underappreciated means for treating the illness. Avery Z. Conner, author of "Fevers of the Mind".

Excellent reference, effective approach
Overall excellent reference for the background, progress, and prospects for bipolar disorder and its sufferers. As the book points out, along with appropriate medications, family support is critical to a favorable disease course. Education of the patient and family is the cornerstone of episodic recovery and the prevention of relapses (as much as is possible), and this book provides excellent, useful summary information as well as proven approaches for resolving difficult issues. Many of the tools described in the book such as active listening and basic problem solving skills have wide application beyond the FFT approach. Their application to bipolar patients and their families, though, requires great delicacy at times, and the authors provide helpful insights through actual clinical examples. Each bipolar case and family is different, and there are no universal cookie-cutter answers, but combined with recent pharmacological advances, this proposed approach provides the best hope for a favorable course.

As the primary supporter of a bipolar family member, I've learned many of these lessons the hard way over the years. Even with that long experience, I found new insights here. My experience strongly supports the authors' premise that the patient and his/her family are THE critical elements in a favorable episodic recovery and long-term maintenance. Though written for the clinician, Bipolar Disorder: A Family-Focused Treatment Approach is easily understandable and usable by family members and patients. I highly recommend it for both.

EXCELLENT
This is an excellent informational book for those who have bipolar disorder and their families. The book is designed to be used by mental health care professionals, and I most certainly encourage them to purchase this book for a family treatment plan that will benefit their clients and the client's family. The approach of the therapy takes the entire family into consideration. It is not just the individual with bipolar that goes through the trauma, but the entire family. The therapy educates the patient and the family as to the disorder and its' attributes, gives the family ways of coping with the disorder and hospitalization, works on medicinal compliance, and prepares the client and the family for any future episodes. Most importantly, it improves the communication of the family which leads to a healthier environment for the client as well as the family. This book is a definite must have for mental health care providers as well as clients and their families. Excellent Job Dr. Miklowitz. By the way, I have bipolar disorder and am a graduate student studying Agency Counseling Education. I have every intention of using the methods in this book for my clients and myself. Well Worth The Money!!!

How a Man Prepares His Daughters for Life (Lifeskills for Men)
Published in Paperback by Bethany House (1996)
Authors: Michael Farris and David Hazard
Amazon base price: $7.99
Average review score:

Very practical
I enjoyed his perspective on the subject matter. I look forward to implementing some of his ideas and suggestions. A good father can make all the difference in the life a girl chooses. I will read this book every few years as my daughter ages.

One of the best "how to" books for dads that I've read!
To develop the potential in and character of your daughter may require some changes in your life as a dad but the rewards are eternal. Men, God commands this and our culture near the turn of the millenium requires serious preparation in order for our daughters to be grounded in the Lord and in their integrity. This book was the first of three of the Lifeskills for Men series that I have read so far and all are concise and thought-provoking. Dig in!!

Practical advice that you can use right now.
This book focuses on real issues that every family faces. All advice is given in the context of his own family and experience, which for me was helpful. I think this book has a great deal to offer any man who is concerned with helping his daughter transition from the relative safety of the family to becoming an adult in a complex and usually unforgiving world. As the father of three - two of whom are sons, I found that many (if not most) topics discussed were highly applicable to all of my children to some extent.

The Internal Sell: Encouraging Executive Influence and Accomplishment
Published in Unknown Binding by Quorum Books (E) (1998)
Authors: David A. Copeland and Michael E. Friesen
Amazon base price: $65.95
Average review score:

This is a good one!
If you have ever wondered why your ideas aren't embraced by your peers and superiors, you need to read this book. I have always been amazed at how often my ideas either get ignored or worse. This book tells how to put your ideas forth so they will be recognized, accepted, and implemented. If you want to do more than just survive in the corporation you must learn to manipulate the system by "selling" your ideas internally... and the book lays out just how to do that. Friesen makes it look easy.

Give this one a quick read, it was worth it for me.

Excellent, practical guide to critical skill.
Michael Friesen has identified a skill and function that doesn't show up on job descriptions or performance reviews, but is probably the most critical tool in determining an executive's job satisfaction and career success. That function is selling internally--to others within your own organization. Anyone working in corporate America will recognize the importance of this function as soon as they read Friesen's thesis on it. But more importantly, readers will learn how they have done with this skill in the past and what they can do to sell internally more effectively in the future by reading this book.

Friesen outlines a very clear, logical and systematic process for selling ideas within a company. He gives real-world hints on completing each of the steps within the process, so that readers can develop clear plans for selling their own ideas in a very methodical fashion. The approach is common-sense, but one that most do not employ because of a myriad of reasons Friesen identifies, including organizational defensiveness, egoism, personality traits and just plain ignorance of its importance!

Friesen's book includes lots of anecdotes and cases that we all can relate to easily. These illustrate the fact that one of the most amazing things about this book is that it wasn't written before--the topic is so critical, that one would expect others to have addressed it before this. But Friesen's is a first, and the guide is so definitive that others will not be needed. This is it! A must read.

Excellent advice for greatly expanding your influence
This book helped me understand that ideas are like goods and services - they can be sold- indeed they must be. Prior to reading this book, I didn't understand this and was frustrated with my efforts to share ideas I have to improve the way my organization functions.

This book provides clear and productive ways of selling your ideas. Organizations and individuals tend to be defensive and reluctant to consider new ways of doing things. The Internal Sell describes typical rejections an individual will face and how to overcome them.

Here's what you can expect from this book:

Lack of understanding of the RESISTANCE of three important realities - organizational defensiveness, differences in personality types, and misinterpretation of power and authority - causes people in many organizations to "give up", get frustrated, "moan and groan", or just take their ideas elsewhere. You can expect from The Internal Sell a new sense of CONFIDENCE in a proven approach that will allow:

* Creativity to abound

* Productivity to increase

* Morale to improve, and

* Innovations to occur at a rate that will surprise you.

The concepts and methodology of The Internal Sell work equally well whether you are INSIDE an organization trying to get your good ideas adopted or OUTSIDE as a sales person dependent on someone in the customer organization to be skillful in selling your idea.

The principles within The Internal Sell are also perfect for the organization that has committed millions of dollars for SAP or some other comprehensive enterprise-changing system. It's still the PEOPLE, their CREATIVITY, and their COMMITMENT that will make these massive investments pay off. The Internal Sell will help you to understand how to make your organization OPTIMIZE individual contributions.

I highly recommend this book to readers in all types of organizations and all levels of the organizational hierarchy.

The sons thoughts
I read this book with intensity, and believe me I don't read very much. I never understood the complexity or the intensity of WWII until I read this book.
I am a navy sailor and I have spent most of my time not realizing what that ment. I read this book after 9/11 and it helped me understand the sevarity of war and how tragic it is.
And even though it might be thought that I have a biased opinion towards my father's book, this is one that you will not put down!

Outstanding
Some books of this type are tedious and rehash the same stories of an awful time in our recent history. I began this reading with reservations, but immediately found it not only an easy read but a page turner. Being written in the first person gives life and excitement to what could have been just another story. This book puts you there. You feel their anxiety. You experience their near hopelessness and rejoice in their triumph. This is a must read for anyone.

David Gilbert is a true hero!
David's story starts on the day the German army attacked Poland at the beginning of World War II. It chronicles one man's struggle to save his family from the Nazis and the heroic efforts he made to save hundreds of other people in the process. David never stopped believing in life and he never stopped believing in God. Through every twist and turn first, while hiding from the Nazis then in the Warsaw Ghetto and finally in Bergen Belsen his quick thinking kept his family safe.

You will not put this book down until David's final liberation. This book is a tribute to his zest for life. Through all the death and destruction David never lost his faith.

David Gilbert is a true hero. His story makes personal what now seems so far removed. It should be read by all those who want to learn from the inhumanity of the Nazi era. This book should be required high school reading. David's story is about life and one man's triumph over incredible odds.

Stories from the Manger

Captivating holiday stories; great gift for yourself!
I work with the author at a major US Bank; he's in Dover, DE and I'm in San Francisco. He mentioned one day that he was an author and had sold over 1000 books; I was impressed but suspicious. So I bought his Xmas book and man it was fantastic reading! Fresh, unique and powerful stories about different characters and animals around the Xmas holiday. I found myself tearing up at times; it was like watching a sappy holiday TV special or Touched by an Angel on TV. But they were cute, touching stories, well worth the reader's investment of time and energy. David has a gift, and I applaud this book.
Now I'm going to check out his other book. I bet it's just as good.

Fantastic Christmas Stories; similar to Lake Wobegon/Keillor
Wonderful book, filled with short stories centered around the Christmas season. What words would describe this book? 'Magical' comes to mind, so does 'stirring'. Smith writes stories that should be read aloud by Garrison Keillor himself because they are magical, heartwarming and stirring. Fresh and original writing. Watch for this book to one day become the next Christmas Box or Christmas Carol. It will get you in the spirit, even if you're feeling Grinchy!
Highly recommended.

Holiday Magic-Great Book!
I was mesmorized with David Michael Smith's book, Stories From The Manger. It captures the reader from the opening tale about an old homeless man on Christmas Eve (which left me dabbing my eyes with tissues by the way), to the last story about a struggling alcoholic on Christmas Eve (which also had me returning to the tissue box). Very sentimental, and moving, I was totally engrossed throughout. This book makes for mandatory Christmas reading (no way you will be a Grinch after reading these 'feel good' tales), and it is also a fantastic gift.
I found Smith's personal web page and emailed him; he is willing to autograph copies too. Get this book, not just at Christmas, but for year round reading too. These stories should be on TV; they'd make excellent specials.
Stories From the Manger is part "Christmas Box", Jimmy Stewart and 'Wonderful Life', Scrooge, and Charlie Brown. Very good book indeed!

Absolutely bewitching!
I wasn't sure what to expect with this anthology, but I found myself enthralled from beginning to end. Nnedi Okorafor's "Crossroads", Seth Lindberg's "Atropos", and James Dorr's "Madness" were special delights.

Stories for all tastes
A great mix of chilling, horrifying, and otherwise entertaining stories.

Very Satisfying!
This is a great compilation of magic, madness, culture and creativity. All of the stories were pretty satisfying, some of them terrifying! There are some writers here that are going to go places. Watch for the authors of the two longest pieces, Nnedi Okorafor (her story is called Crossroads) and James S. Dorr (he wrote a story called Madness).

Great, but.....
Combines history with the apparitions of Mary giving incite to the messages given and the reasons for her appearance. As a Catholic I feel better informed about Mary. A book hard to put down once opened.

However a lot must taken with a grain of salt. Some of the events/person he focuses on are not approved by the church if not banned. Plus it would turn off any non-Catholic with his "the Catholic church is the only True church". Many views are that of a very conservative Catholic. Much is written from the defence of the church- not mentioning the many things the church has inflicted on the world and why people fell away. However the chuch has been bashed a lot over the years and its a nice change to see a defence.

I'm surprised he calls himself a biologist and chemist because he calls many recent inventions such as the internet and the computer as the root cause of the many evils of todays world. Plus he has no love for Darwin, which any biologist has to give credit for many scientific advances today, plus the Pope even recognizes the great quantities of scientific proof (for creation of everything but the soul). He forgets that many of todays tools are double edged tools and the use is determined by the person using it.

You read his version of the anti-Christ and you wonder if we the U.S. are it.

The Woman and the Dragon: Apparitions of Mary.
David Michael Lindsey has my gratitude for such an indepth study of the Blessed Virgin's historical apparitions. I have been a serious student of her life, work, and apparitions. Yet, Michael has allowed me to learn much more concerning real history in the making of the world for which I now have a much clearer perception of Her Work in the interest of humanity.

To awaken to one's own blindness, is a sad thing.

Michael's excellent literary skills makes for clarity in understanding what has not been understood. Many important details have come to light without which it is difficult to understand Her. It is a book you cannot put down at day's end.

Her Warnings, Our Struggles, and Inspiration
Upon beginning this book I had anticipated information regards to the apparitions alone. Yet, the author has done extensive research in completing this wonderful literature which includes much, much more. I cried as I read the struggles of all the human races and Christianity; and, again because of Mary's enormous love to warn us of such atrocities. I have read many other Marian books and, this is among the elite of those titles. I would recomend The Woman and the Dragon to those who are seeking information about our Blessed Mother, and how her love for us exists for all time.

212 Views of Central Park
There are several books of photographs of Central Park on the store shelves. This one stands out. The photos in 212 Views are stunning. You feel as if you are standing right there, you imagine you will feel the fresh air on your face as you turn the page! The text is like a well-informed friend who accompanies you, the reader, through Central Park, sharing select details about the history and design of the Park and adding layers of depth to your immediate sensory appreciation of the Park. Whether you are a frequent user of Central Park, an occasional visitor, or an arm chair stroller, experiencing the park only through the pages of the book, I highly recommend 212 Views. It's a great gift for the holidays, too. (I bought copies for my exercise partner who loves fast-walking in the Park and for my mother!)
