Fluff That Makes You Feel Good
Books like this do everything in their power to get your drive going. And every time I read one (which isn't often), I do feel good about myself. But in the end, I'm back on Earth a few days later. OK, I am sounding pathetic, but the truth is, there isn't a whole lot of practical advice here, just motivational anecdotes. To be frank, there is nothing wrong with that. It just needs more to distinguish itself.

It starts out promising with the part about choosing the characteristics you most want in a job. However, it goes downhill with the straight out of "Touch By an Angel" cabbie stories that start every chapter. What I really did like about this book is that it makes you reevaluate the situation you are currently in to make the most of it. It doesn't preach dropping everything and chasing after your dream because not all of us are in a position to do so. Another thing I liked is that it keeps the message short (under 200 pages). There is no need for a book like this to be 300+ pages. All in all, it's a good starter book for those looking to make a career change.

To question your careeer, this i a must read
Get control of your career and your expectations of what career means in your life. This book does a great job of guiding you along as you question wehre you are in life and where you want to be. Redundant at times and interactive "take control books" usually don't appeal to me, but this one is an expection.

More Helpful Advice from Dick Leider
Leider and Shapiro have done it again, writing a book that speaks to a crucial issue in many people's lives. "What do I want to be when I grow up" is a question many of us are asking, at an age when one would think the question had been long answered. Like all of Dick Leider's books, this one is a very pleasant and calming read, filled with interesting stories and sound advice. Whistle While You Work, in combination with the Calling Cards, can give great insight for each individual into what type of work would be most rewarding, and what work environment most suitable. This is a very informative book.

Microsoft and this book.
I bought this book and when I started reading it discovered that I had read the bios on the ballplayers previously. Wondering where I had, I started to do a search in my huge collection of baseball books and cds. Sure enough, I discovered that the biographical information had previously been released on the Microsoft: Complete Baseball Cd that was available in 1995. There is some new stuff in the book that was not on the cd.

A beautiful book for the browsing baseball buff
I received this book as a gift and have enjoyed it very much. The number of players covered is extensive, and the biographies are generally fair, well-researched, and well-written. As a younger baseball fan who has long had an interest in the entire history of the game, I have particularly gotten a kick out of the analyses of the 19th and early 20th century ballplayers, as well as the pictures attached to each biography. I am a little disappointed, however, that the authors only use the classic, rather banal (generally) statistics in their biographical sketches, especially as the book was compiled by the editors of the bible of baseball, "Total Baseball". It's fine to read about how many wins Grover Cleveland Alexander racked up in his great career, but how good was he really in comparison to the other greats of his day, as well as in comparison to the greats of today? Stats like ERA+, PRO+, etc., would have really put each of these players in the proper historical perspective. I realize that this book is aimed at general audience, and that many baseball fans still deride advanced statistical analysis, but such analysis truly enriches evaluation of the long history of America's past-time. Don't get me wrong, the book is a lot of fun. I look forward, however, to when some accomplished sabermetricians expand the project. Reading about Babe Ruth's antics off the field accompanied by a searching analysis that truly reveals how mammoth a presence he was on the field, will be icing on the cake.

Most interesting historical baseball book
With all the trouble baseball is in today, this book provides an outlet for the fan who loved the game before agents, Selig, Don Fehr, astroturf, overpaid performers, etc. You can browse through it again and again, and still enjoy the stories of these players. It is a great supplement to the statistics that we have for all the players of the past.

Great Book...needs a little touchup though.
This book helped me to pass the 70-58 exam with a 900 and I don't really have any networking experience. I would highly recommend it. I would however appreciate it if the publisher would reveiw it again for typos which seemed to be present in quite a few places. This could throw someone like myself off.

GOOD BOOK ...
This book helped me pass NetEss with a 933 .. It is a good book with very clear wording, which any person could understand.

I did find that there were a lot of typing and spelling errors, which does become a little much. It covers all that you need to know for the exam and will be core credit to passing. YOU MUST... also take some online tests which simulate the MCSE exam itself.

The book will definately go into my "handy kit" and will be a great referance. The reason this book lost a star was because of it lack of information on RAID(and typos!). Use another source of information for this topic! IT IS IN THE EXAM! Microsofts description of this would be the best to study.

ENJOY.. I HOPE YOU ALL PASS

Can be used as a Networking Learning tool as well
I used this study guide along with Sybex's Test Success (ISBN:0782121462, read my review)and both helped me pass the 70-058 with a 900/1000. My only complaint was that WINS and DNS topic coverage in this book was null, and I was tested on these topics in more than one occasion on the real exam.

This book takes a while to read, but it gives you a wealth of knowledge. You will feel that you have actually learned something, which makes this book an excellent networking-terminology learning tool as well.

The CD tests included are challenging and they provide a good measure of your real exam readiness. I'd recommend taking these tests once each and only after you have mastered the material completely. The reason is that the test questions (and answer order) are not randomly generated and taking these tests more than once might actually hurt more than benefit your learning.

I recommend this study guide for its value as an exam tool and a networking reference. Complement it with a Cram book, the Sybex's Test Success book (mentioned above), or a source of practice exam questions (Measureup or Transcender) to tackle the NetEss test with confidence.

Will Work for Peace is a triumph of poetic Davids.
As one of the poets featured in Will Work for Peace, one might expect me to be a bit biased, but nothing could be farther from the truth. Most poets work in a virtual vacuum, only tenuously connected to each other by the occasional workshop or shared membership in a 'poetry society'. When Brett Axel first approached me for a submission to an anthology he was considering, the names Marge Piercy, Lyn Lifshin, Moshe Bennaroch and so many others were abstractions to me as a fledgling poet. I knew these tremendous writers were 'out there' somewhere, beating down doors with their words and keeping a struggling artform alive. But to think that someday I would ever share a credit with these dynamic modern poets would be a pipe dream at best. It is through the sincere efforts of Brett Axel that many newer voices like mine have an extraordinary opportunity to appear with Pulitzer Prize winners and other poetic heavyweights. By way of an honest review, however, I will say this- not everything in this book will be to your particular liking. I myself came across some works that did not move me in the way the author may have intended. Some imagery can be raw and visceral, using shock value in place of craft at times. But to ignore those voices would be an even more shocking turn of events, so praise be to the editor for not sacrificing his vision to a senseless conformity. As Pete Seeger so aptly put it in his quote, trying to read all these poems at one time would be like trying 'to swallow Manhattan whole'. I say to you- buy this book, read this book, but understand that it's what you do after reading this book that will ultimately define who you could be. Poetry is alive and well, and lives in the blunt pages of Will Work for Peace.

Thumbs Up
Just amazing start to finish! I like the disregard for fame used in putting the book together. That great poems got in even if they were writtenby nobodys. Look at Roger Bonair-Agard's poem on page 74. Shortly after Will Work For Peace came out he won Slam Nationals, becoming Slam Champion of 1999, which will be getting him lots of offers. But Zeropanik Press didn't need to be told he was good by an award. They could tell by his writing! Good for them and good for all of us because Will Work For Peace is a literary milestone. It's a new standard for all future anthology editors to try to live up to. Thumbs up to Brett Axel and Thumbs up to Zeropanik Press for their guts and integrty.

You have to read this book!
Brett Axel visited my Church and I bought a copy of Will Work For Peace from him, not for poetry, but because I care about working for peace. I started reading through it thinking It'd just go on my shelf and that'd be the end of it, but the book grabbed me and kept me rivited. If I had known that poetry was this alive I'd have been into poetry. I've been reading some of the poems to my friends who also didn't think poetry was important and they are saying the same thing. Fantastic! There's no way to get through this book without having your old mindsets challenged. It's funny, powerful, sad, and uplifting. A book that deserves to be read by everyone. A book that really can make the world a better place!

A Nice Book on Border Collies
Overall, I would say that this book is good, but nothing special. It does have good information on the Border Collie and their history as well as awesome pictures and illustrations. However, the book is mainly made up of general information on training, dog sports, nutrition, health, and breeding which could be found in many other books. I would have liked to see more specific information pertaining to the breed itself and/or herding.

The worlds best BC book
This is just a short note to let anyone thinking of getting a book on BCs to get this one. It is wonderful!

Great information
The information in this book was very helpful. It is simple to understand and gives you the up front techniques that a person needs to train a BC. I would recommend this book to any first owners of this breed. They are wonderful dogs and deserve the best care possible.

BUYERS BEWARE! THERE ARE VARIANTS OF THIS BOOK!!
Lehninger is one name that most undergraduates who take biochemistry courses know too well. This simplified, well-structured version remains an asset to a great number of students. But, no matter from which source you are ordering it, be sure to specify the actual edition you want as precise as possible. There are several variants of this book in the market (including Amazon.com...)! Do not forget to enter the complete details (including the ISBN number) of this textbook while placing an order for it; or else, you may end-up with the kind of "Lehninger" you didn't ask for.

Biochemistry for medical studies
An excellent book in biochemistry for a beginner in this subject. I especially like the the way the chapters are administrated. The book is best read from beginning to the end, because this will give you the whole picture in a educative fashion. It covers all the essential subjects of cellbiology needed for the medical student, as for instance metabolism and DNA. It also has advantages over other biochemistry books with its nicer apperance. With the pictures, medical notices and cellbiology material it covers all thats necessary. Good stuff and pleasant reading.

WOW!! More than I had expected, and sooner too.
I'm a medical student, and this book, was recomemded for biochemistry, but I couldn't find it here in Peru, (because the 3rd edition hasn't been translated yet to spanish). I bought it here, and it arrived 9 days before estimated!!.
The 3D models of proteins ara amazing and the included cd helps a lot before examinations, (the interactive simulations of molecules is incredible!!), it really helps you understand all the biochemical processes. The depth of the book is perfect, no too simple, but not too complex either. PERFECT for med school

Evil Down in the Alley: A Novel

A masterful story from a radically different perspective.
David Dononvan's novel, "Evil Down in the Alley", takes the reader along a well-constructed trail where the good guys don't wear white hats and the bad guys don't wear black ones, any more. He takes a highly technical industry and portrays it in layman terms without even a hint of alienating the uninformed reader. The story carries us along, every step of the way, with wit, accuracy and intrigue. There was never a good stopping place, so this avid reader, just kept on reading until I reached the end: an experience I seldom have in reading contemporary works. Thank you David Donovan for the education, the entertainment and the hours of absolute fascination with this book. A sequel? By all means. A movie? I hope so. Regardless, "Down in the Alley" stands well all by itself as a charming and wonderful look into the other side of an oft maligned industry and a larger view of modern society, in which good and evil co-exist in all of us.

This was a great book with lots of objectivity!!!
This book is great reading for anyone who lives in or knows of anyone living in the so called "corridor." The book addresses a subject that is a source of fear for many people living in this region and focuses on it from a very objective view point, all the while providing action and romance.

The Pre-Eminent Eco-Thriller Written to Date!
As a practicing environmental engineer and native New Orlenian (who used to work directly for the industries in "Cancer Alley"), I can say with some authority that Donovan has weaved a tale of intensity and realism that defines many of today's environmental issues in the region. His blending of sound character development and careful (but not overdone) definition of technical issues which are key to understanding the plot make Evil Down in the Alley a superb read for everyone. Many of the characters vividly remind me of real folks with industry and state government whom I used to deal with back in Louisiana. Donovan's portrayals of various New Orleans "nuggets" were very accurate and painted welcome images of many of the Crescent City's places and culture (including those wonderful sloppy roast beef po-boys at Parasol's!). He does an excellent job of painting his characters as good and evil and in-between, and the mental tug-of-war that often takes place within those that are charged with protecting our nation's environment. This is one of the best books I've read in many years, and it clearly forces A Civil Action into the "back seat" of noted works in eco-thrillers. Evil is the perfect mix of characters, plot, suspense, murder, mystery, and romance. This outstanding work is more than movie-worthy, so I hope that Hollywood takes notice.

Michael Strogoff

Exciting Adventure
My paperback mysteriously disappeared ages ago-- I'm so glad to see the book is back in print, in several editions! Not only is MICHAEL STROGOFF one of Jules Verne's least-known books, it also spawned one of the least-known Jules Verne film adaptations! Seek out if you can, from 1937, SOLDIER AND THE LADY, starring Anton Walbrook (the hero), Akim Tamiroff (the villain!) and Ed Brophy (the comic-relief newspaper-reporter). It feels like a Disney "adventure" film decades before Disney started doing them!

Not your typical Jules Verne, but definitely a classic!
MICHAEL STROGOFF is not the typical Jules Verne novel one might expect. It's not the science fiction that he is so well known for. It is however an adventure that is sure to please, just like his scientific adventures (JOURNEY TO THE CENTER OF THE EARTH, FROM THE EARTH TO THE MOON, 20,000 LEAGUES UNDER THE SEA). This novel is more comparable to his lesser known FUR COUNTRY, which is also highly recommended. MICHAEL STROGOFF is the story of the currier of the czar of Russia during a Mongol invasion. There's adventure, romance, strategy, comedy and just about a little something for everyone else. All combined, MICHAEL STROGOFF is an exciting, quick read that will surely entertain just about any reader.

A Hollywood Blockbuster!
Okay, maybe not - yet. This beautiful story of adventure, danger, heroism, and hairbreadth escapes leads me to believe that visionary Jules Verne correctly predicted yet ANOTHER modern invention - the blockbuster action/adventure film. And yet it would be a shame to make a movie of this brilliant novel, however ideal it might be. I have loved every Jules Verne book I have read (with the exception of the wretched Paris in the 20th Century), and I believe this very well might be his best. I am thrilled to see it back in print. Read it and marvel at how far ahead of his time Verne was in every respect.

READ THIS BEFORE YOUR BUY!
Have you ever seen sportscentury on ESPN?? I have to, but that's not what this is.. It's good, but that's not it. it goes by decade, and has a big bio on the main person from that centure, and has some extra stats for the decade at the end... then it talks about SOME other people..so it's still a good book, but if your buying it because u think it's like the tv show on ESPN, it's not

A great gift for a sports fanatic
I bought this book for a gift - but caught myself reading it before I wrapped it - so I bought one for me, too. A great look at sports through the 20th century. Any sports fan would enjoy this book.

Now ESPN needs is a Video to go with this!
Over the past several months their has been an abundance of books about the sports century, ranking people and each list is very subjective. ESPN has put together some of the more interesting highlights of the last century and this book is one of a kind.

In just over 280 pages there is more sports memories than just about any other book I have read. Packed with photos, and some of them rare, laced with stories and filled with memories, there is something in this book for every sports fan, both young and old.

ESPN has made a name in the sports world as the leader in sports coverage, not with this book they proved themselves right. You'll read about Babe Ruth, Joe Louis, Joe Dimaggio and Ted Williams, Johnny Unitas, Pete Rose, Ali and Jordan.

For the true sports fans this book makes the perfect addition to the library. About the only thing book needs now is a video to compliment the writing. Excellent work and congratulations ESPN on a job well done.

A good story despite a mediocre film
Most of the B5 fans I know were disappointed in the Thirdsapce movie. (It didn't compare well to the incredible effort of In The Beginning.) However, Thirdspace is actually a pretty nice story that comes out much better in the print version.

Things certainly make much more sense, at least.

I do notice a distressing similarity to "The Touch of Your Shadow, the Whisper of Your Name" (novel 5) -- they're by no means the exact same story, but they are similar.

Good movie, much better book
The movie was good, much better than "River of Souls", but the books was incredible. Peter David has a way of writing that is absolutely incredible.

It was cool!
I love Peter David, and I love B5, so the two combined is very cool! If you are picking which B5 books to read, pick this one, In the Begining or To Dream in the City of Sorrows. They are just as good as the show/movies. If you saw the movie of this and liked it, read the book too, it has more than just what was in the movie!
