John L. Sullivan and His America (Sport and Society)
Published in Hardcover by Univ of Illinois Pr (Pro Ref) (1988)
Author: Michael T. Isenberg
Amazon base price: $29.95
Average review score:

A Great Biography
A nicely written biography of a great champion. Isenberg begins with a scholarly discussion of the Irish-American background in which Sullivan was born and extends to the bare knuckle society were he reigned supreme for twelve years. The thorough coverage of Sullivan's career is full of interesting anecdotes of many of the great fighters of the era and you gain real insight into the America of Sullivan's time. But, most importantly, in the end you become genuinely familiar with the man-John L.-himself.

Sullivan Book Review
An interesting account of the champion from Boston. Exhaustive research makes for an excellent read. I enjoyed it.

Isenberg's book on Sullivan is outstanding!
As a boxing writer and historian, I have read hundreds of books on the sport and even authored one. Isenberg's book on the Great John L. is among the best boxing books ever, a very well researched work that dwells into the smallest details of Sullivan both as a fighter and a sociological phenom of his time, the first blue collar sports hero in America.. To end with a cliche: This book is a must read book for fistic fans --Enrique Encinosa

The Lost Girl
Published in Paperback by Cambridge University Press (1981)
Authors: D. H. Lawrence and John Worthen
Amazon base price: $45.00
Average review score:

Extroidinary Novel
This book was beautifully and passionately written. It is a love story unique and philosophical. Do we choose our own fates? Alvina will tell you.

Soul Searching
Just like SISTER CARRIE, THE LOST GIRL is about a young woman searching for her place in the world. Meaning, floucing from one man to another, flirting, playing, getting engaged then dashing away for fun. And just like JEANNIE GERHARDT, this old man gets herself in trouble.

But the most fascinating part of this book is it's glimps into her background. How she was brought up in a wealthy and rich household, only to try out different occupations against her father's wishes, then ends up as a lower classed female in life. Very tragic.

A Touching, Soul-Searching Novel
I recently got done reading this wonderful, yet forgotten novel of Lawrence's. Truly compelling in it's intricate details of a young woman trying to find herself. Literally. She goes on the 'universal' self journey and discovers that she was lost and finally finds her identity and sensuality in the man she loves. D.H. Lawrence has a wonderful way of not wrapping up the ending in a nice, neat little package. As always, Lawrence is the ultimate man of mystery, sensual needs and desires. A "must read" for those who love to read Lawrence and for those who never have!

Lost in a Florida Disappearing from Sight
A tremendously funny and sad came-of-age narrative that recalls the hearty, chaotic family fictions of Richard Russo and Ralph Lombreglia, with the cold steel screams of Thom Jones or Denis Johnson lurking in the basement. Sheppard is a pitiless observer of all the foibles that make up the wasted lives of the small among us, yet he arranges these bits of madness in graceful, unexpected forms.

What the hell was that?
"Midnight in Monaco" is a screwball Florida fairy tale. It's a frolic through a kitschy circus-flavored world where lawyers are also tarot card readers and Ninja assassins; where a red-headed dwarf shouts "Auto Zone!" every morning; and where the sun pops up over the horizon "like a banana-flavored Moon Pie."

The characters--including a grill cook philosopher insomniac, a con man who schemes to freeze his wife's head after her death so she can live in future times, and a grandmother (called "Grandmom") who is retired from the circus where she had a knife-toss-at-little-doggies-act--are so vigorously eccentric that you shake your head and ask yourself, "What the hell was that?"

Enough Love to Go Around
Robert is an only child and he is used to having his mother all to himself. One day Robert's mother announces that Stevie will be coming to stay with them while his mother is working during the week and Robert is not happy. Robert gets jealous of the attention the younger Stevie (who Robert considers a crybaby) gets from his parents and hates the fact that he has to share his toys, friends and everything else with Stevie. Robert cannot wait until Stevie's mother comes to pick him up at the end of the week, or can he?

Stevie was published by John Steptoe when he was only nineteen years old. He expertly captures the feelings many children have when they have to share things or attention with a younger child or sibling. Check out Stevie, for a humorous story that most anyone can relate to.

Stevie
Stevie, written and illustrated by John Steptoe when he was only 16 yrs. old, was the inauguration of a wonderful career as a children's author for Mr. Steptoe. All of his books are heartfelt, compassionate, richly illustrated, and can bridge the gap among all races; he was doing the multicultural thing well before it was "multicultural"ly defined and politically correct. Stevie fits in with our current PC climate without coming off as trendy and purposeful. It simply tells a tale of a young boy, Stevie, who is sent to stay with an older boy and his family while Stevie's mother works at her new job. The older boy, Robert, resents the intrusion of Stevie in his life. Always tagging along, getting footprints on the bedcovers, and acting "like a baby" to Robert's mother, Stevie is the classic irritating but innocent little brother who, in the end will be sorely missed by Robert when Stevie's mother finally comes to take him back home with her. As a young white reader who grew up in a very white world, this book, about two African-American boys, was always my very favorite children's book not only because of the stunning illustration, but because of the commonality and familiarity this book held with me: it could have easily been my story. And it could have been any story for any child anywhere. I loved the fact that it was introduced at a time when race relations needed bridging and commonalities needed awareness. It is a book for the ages.

The Best of Growing Edge II: Popular Hydroponics and Gardening for Small-Commercial Growers and Hobbyists is a compilation of the best of the magazine's articles originally published between 1994 and 1999. The Best of Growing EDGE is a collection of the best articles, by twenty four different authors, from the first five years of Growing EDGE magazine. It covers hydroponics, greenhouses, nutrients, lighting, and other new and innovative techniques to use in high tech gardening and horticulture. Since the articles are from the first five years of Growing EDGE magazine, each chapter is a comprehensive compendium of cutting edge horticulture without going over the edge! Bruce Coville's Book of Magic: Tales to Cast a Spell on You
Published in Paperback by Scholastic (1996)
Authors: Bruce Coville, John Pierard, Lawrence Watt Evans, and Janni Lee Simner
Amazon base price: $3.99
Average review score:

Terrific anthology!
This collection of stories is worthy of Bruce Coville's name on the cover. I loved all of the stories, especially "The Fourth Wish." I recommend it to anyone that loves fantasy and magic, like I do! As usual, Bruce Coville has outdone himself.

An encanting collection of magic
I absolutly fell in love with this book. The only story I didn't like was "Winwood Rose" and that was only because it made me too sad. "The Fourth Wish" was both thought provoking and thoughtful. And when I need hope I read "Visions," "The Wonderworm," or "Phoenix Farm." Bruce Coville's own stories, "Wizard's Boy" and "Watch Out!" are very cool. It makes you think. I adore this book.

See new book with updated material
As the original editor of this book, I am very gratified by the review already posted. I am writing now (February 2000) simply to differentiate this book from Guide to Cost Management, an all new, much less expensive, and--I believe--far better book published in January 2000. Handbook of Cost Management was originally published in the mid-1990s; since 1997 it has been edited by someone else. Although there have been many expensive loose-leaf updates to the original book, I believe that much of the book is still outdated. (The new book--Guide to Cost Management--is also listed on Amazon.com under my name; it was published in January 2000 by John Wiley & Sons with all new material.)

The best cost management book I've seen!
The most useful and comprehensive book I've found regarding cost management. Provides in-depth information on activity-based costing, abc software, investment justification, target costing, functional analysis, and performance measurement.

John Thomas and Lady Jane
Published in Paperback by Viking Press (1989)
Author: D. H. Lawrence
Amazon base price: $4.95
Average review score:

A wonderful novel
This is a book you can lose yourself in, never mind any "notorious" tag due to its being one of the three versions of Lady Chatterley's Lover. This "second draft" is actually much better than the final version. I didn't find it mawkish at all. It's about tenderness so maybe that's why the other reviewer thought it "mawkish". Don't look for sensationalism here, this novel is about how two people from different worlds fall in love. It's really superb.

This brilliant ¿version¿ is a novel in its own right.
One of the most fascinating things about picking up a book is being able to immerse oneself in the author's world. If the book is a success, one inevitably wonders where such genius comes from, how it develops. Part of the pleasure of reading John Thomas and Lady Jane is, therefore, the way it allows us to glimpse the writer's creative process in the second of three distinct stages in the formation of the idea of Lady Chatterley's Lover. It also allows us to see how D.H. Lawrence develops the various themes he returns to again and again in his works: overcoming class barriers, discovering sensuality and passion--in the true, deep senses of the words--and struggling against the brutally mechanical, cold world of modern day life. Yet the attractions of this novel are not limited to the rather academic analyses of how he gets from the rough first version to the final version of his notorious novel, Lady Chatterley's Lover. Though the plot is roughly developed in some places, almost mawkishly sentimental in others, John Thomas and Lady Jane is truly a pleasure to read for those seeking reaffirmation of the fact that tenderness and compassion still exist in this world, and that regardless of where, when and whom, it is always possible for us to find a way of living that truly expresses and embodies who we really are.

The Little PC Book

Authors: Lawrence J. Magid, Darcy Dinucci, and John Grimes
Amazon base price: $17.95
Average review score:

A great book
I have been using PCs at work for a few years but recently bought my first home PC. This book taught me a lot. It was easy to read and incredibly informative.

Essential for new computer users
I've been using Apple computers since 1981 or so. And I still operate my business using Macintosh computers. But in an increasingly Windows OS world, I often find myself seated at--horrors--some sort of PC. I go from computer expert to rank beginner in seconds! Whether you're an old Mac addict forced to use Windows, or a new PC computer user wondering how it all works and what you can do with it, I recommend this book very highly! It told me everything I needed to know without making me feel like an idiot or a dummy. Leave those other books on the rack. Magid's book is the one you want.
