walking with saints
90 Days with the Christian Classics is perfectly suited for once a day dosing! For each day there is a portion of the Bible connected to a passage from a Christian author of yesteryear. My only disappointment was some difficulty in identifying the sources cited for each authors. The lives of the authors cited spans over 1000 years, so these are words from history for our age! Pertinent biographical information on the authors is also included briefly. The editors have done well to anchor this work with substantial amounts of Bible excerts. The Bible, which is the best selling book of all time, is truly a treasured echo from history for our age! The hard padded book cover is magnificent and will serve well when readers bring it along on their travels.

Good book but nothing great.
While nowhere near as good as his childrens' books Roald Dahl still shows great wit and his affinity for weirdness in this book.

A bridge between his stories for children and adults
Preface: I love almost everything by Dahl.

This collection is a nice bridge between his stories for children, and his stories for adults. For example, in his story "The Ratcatcher", Dahl's use of language and detail is more similar to his children's stories. However, the story is more grown-up, and told at a pace more similar to the stories in, say, _Switch, Bitch_.

It is an enjoyable collection. More consistently strong than his _Tales of the Unexpected_, some of which are quite weak.

Cultural Studies (Cultural Studies Journal)
Published in Paperback by Taylor & Francis Books Ltd (28 March, 1991)
Authors: Lawrence Grossberg, John Frow, Graham Turner, and Janice Radway

Compelling collection of cultural studies essays
Grossberg, Nelson, and Treichler have compiled a compelling collection of cultural studies essays. The selections in the book examine cultural studies from multiple angles, demonstrating the difficulty in identifying one encompassing definition of cultural studies. The differences do not create dissonance, however; rather they create a thought provoking collection that is worth reading.

The Defeat of Che Guevara: Military Response to Guerrilla Challenge in Bolivia

A clear-headed account of important history
This is an interesting book written in a direct and fluid style. The details and explanations are very credible and should be required reading for everyone that has a Guevara poster on their wall. Not that they would read anything that contradicts their distorted world view, of course. To the credit of the author and translator, this book seems like it would be dry and dull, but it is not. If you're interested in history and South America, then I recommend this book.

good survey and reference book
There's not much I can add to the editorial reviews. It's a handbook, it's comprehensive, if you're a serious participant in the field you ought to make yourself familiar with this book. It's 27 chapters of personality by the big names in the field. Seven chapters on "Theoretical Perspectives" (psychoanalytic, cognitive, etc.), 7 on the "Interface with Other Fields" (biology, genetics, social psychology, etc.), and a slew of chapters on "Research Topics" like gender, the unconscious, and personality change. A great reference book; a good survey.

surrealistic and haunting view of new orleans
Laughlin's photography goes inside the beauty and decay of New Orleans and surrounds, yielding a surrealistic view that mirrors much literature, but few photographs, of the area. Laughlin often uses models whose faces are distant yet haunting, and has a marvelous eye for architecture. Much more than photographs of a place, these are photographs that become part of the place. Comments by Laughlin and others that accompany the photographs are definitely an enhancement.

Amusing childrens book
I first read this book when I was very young in a scholastic bound edition. It has some very, very simple codes and cyphers explained very easily with simple, amusing illustrations. Basic substitutions, "invisible" ink, and the like. You won't find discussion of PGP, TripleDES or RSA Encryption here; the book is aimed at your precocious 7-10 year old. One of the codes in here I have used for nearly twenty years to keep my notes private, and I can write it as fast as english! Looking back at it, the book is a little silly, but I remember it as a great favorite. Take this review with a grain of salt- the Author, John Lawrence Peterson, is my grandfather. @--William Lawrence Peterson

Huston, not a city in Texas
Hollywood (and much of the United States, for that matter) was built by powerful families. The Zaibatsus of early Hollywood -- the Barrymores, the Zanucks, the Gish sisters -- gave us some of the finest films ever made, as well as a template for film production that has survived for eighty years.

Add to this list the Hustons. In many ways, they represent the last half of the Twentieth century in Hollywood. This book brilliantly captures the power, fame, and scandals in which the Huston's were involved. The prose is informative without sacrificing readability, and the book is thoroughly researched. I recommend it for anyone interested in the Hollywood Studio System and how it changed after the 1940s. Fantastic reading on an important subject.
