Biomolecular Electronics: An Introduction Via Photosensitive Proteins
Published in Hardcover by Springer Verlag (January, 1998)
Authors: Marina Georgadze, David Amiel, Nikolai Vsevolodov, and D. Kaplan
Amazon base price: $91.00
Average review score:

Well explained and thorough
This book is mainly aimed at the graduate student entering the field of photoactive proteins. The main focus of the book is rhodopsins and bacteriorhodopsins. As a graduate student studying the photocycle of bacteroiorhodopsin, I found a lot of information that I would have had to spend a long time searching for in the literature. The book starts off by explaining the proteins' structure and function, then goes on to explain the types of experiments that have been carried out and the information about the mechanisms and function that they have afforded. There are a few chapters explaining the optoelectronic and photophysical applications of these proteins. There are about 150 patents of bacteriorhodopsin in biomolecular electronics - proving that the descibed applications are not just 'pie in the sky' but are realistic possibilities.

For anyone who is planning to study this area, or are interested in the way these proteins will be used in bioelectronics applications, I would recommend this book for the price. Many textbooks that I have only used for one class and never picked up again have cost much more than this, so this is good value.

Also, the literature referenced is extensive, so you can look up the original papers if necessary.

The Burgee: Premier Marina Guidebook

A Must-have Aboard
The Burgee is a must for U.S. and Canadian boaters. I'm a professional mariner with lots of hours cruising the Northwest and shelves full of cruising references, but this book stands out when it comes to getting information on the hundreds of marinas in Puget Sound and the Gulf Islands - - Olympia to Nanimo; I couldn't find one that it missed! Not only are there clear diagrams showing the marina layout (docks, mooring buoys, fuel docks, etc.), but also names of managers with phone numbers, VHF channels, FAX numbers, addresses. Want to know what's available for fuel, water, supplies, electrical wattage, amount of moorage, including quest moorage? It's all there, plus most anything else you could possibly want to know. The format is clear and very "user friendly". The Burgee is something I would not want to be without, especially when I'm heading for an unknown location.

Just plain nuts, or genius?
Marina Vaizey is well qualified as an editor to co-author a book with Christo; she's a much-published art editor.

Christo's work struck me at first as just plain nuts. Wrap a bridge in cloth? Surround an island with pink, floating plastic? Run a fence for miles? Stack oil drums into a mountain? Then I saw the photos of the Key Biscayne islands, each emerald drop surrounded by a flamingo pink halo and I got it. This is art on a monumental scale. And the temporary nature of it makes it even more special; to see these works most people must rely on photos or sketches of the proposed concept by Christo; the actual work of art only exists for a short period of time and of course by nature, cannot travel to exhibitions. How I wish I could have flown over the Keys to see their complete transformation by this incredible artist. Once you study the photos and drawings in this book, you'll have a great idea of Christo's unique genius and the role of his partner Jeanne-Claude (who only recently began to gain credit for her part in his work.)

There aren't enough books on Christo, so this is an important work. Don't miss it.

One of my all-time favorites
When I was reading this book, I got so wrapped up in the story that my heart rate went up and I was practically shaking. This was an intense, epic sort of story dealing with class, sex, power, passions that are more complex than love or desire or hate. I also liked the fact that the title character is an extremely powerful female.

Very clear and concise introduction to the Council documents
This is a very good book for anyone beginning to look at the documents of Vatican II.

It gives clear paraphrase of all sixteen documents. At the beginning of the book there are two short introductions one on the Revelance of the Council Today and the other "Message to Humanity" issued at the beginning of the Council.

This book presents the documents in the way they should be interpreted within the Church.
