Gooficon: a Repair Manual for English

A great ESL resource
This book is an original, readable resource for ESL instructors. The basic premise is to organize English grammar according to the errors which learners often make. The authors clearly have extensive experience in teaching ESL, as the examples are insightful and well-organized. Furthermore, the book is not bogged down with jargon. It is to the point and readily applicable. I only wish that it were longer, and still in print. (It's very difficult to find.) I hope Burt and Kiparsky write a new edition or get this book back into print.

Good book to help children deal with feelings!
My 6 year old daughter loves the books by Elizabeth Crary. She likes that there are different endings to the story, depending on which outcome she picks. This would be a great series for elementary school teachers to add to their collection. It truly helps children learn how to deal with their emotions.

Good for vocabulary building
The cassette is actually a short story centered around a few actors on a movie set. The Italian dialog on the tape consists of their script as well as their conversations off camera. After every section of dialog (about 1 minute) you are given a translation of the key words and phrases you have just heard, then the story continues in Italian. It would have been nice, I think, to hear again the previous section of Italian before continuing on with the story. In any event, the tape is a wonderful tool for building vocabulary. This tape is not suitable for raw beginners. Buona Fortuna!

I Liked this book.
Despite the hokey title Love's Perjury by Marina Francis is a good book about a lady named Diana Verney who falls for a wealthy guy named David Farnham, the book was enjoyble and the plot's location is in England and I recommend the book to any Harlequin Romance Book fan who likes Romance books that are set in England.

This good book needs to be re-issued.
Shortly after the assassination of President John Kennedy, Priscilla McMillan contacted Oswald's widow, Marina, and spent considerable time with her. McMillan had interviewed Lee Oswald when he defected to Russia and had the added advantage of knowledge of Russia and Russians. She used this to persuade Marina to give an account of her life with Oswald. To this day, 2000, nobody has given a better account of Marina's view of their relationship. It is very worthwhile reading.

ODT Strategy Guide
This book was one of the best since the game itself is hard and you would need this strategy guide to get the appropriate items to fully beat the game. It is the best strategy guide I've read ever.

Remix: Conversations with Immigrant Teenagers

Authors: Marina Tamar Budhos and Marina, T. Budhos

Remix captures the heart and soul of refugee teens' lives
Remix gets to the core of what it is to be an immigrant teen in the US today. Budhos allows the characters to speak their own stories, yet also gives us stunning insight into their lives through her observations of them. It is refreshingly unsentimental, yet permits moments of raw emotion and poignant vulnerability to erupt on the page. It is indeed a window into a world that few mainstream Americans every pause to consider.

pitiful
Alas, Ms. McCaffrey strikes again. Throughout her writing, she is plagued by....bad writing. Her ideas are wonderful, and if only properly executed, could make up wonderful books. Too bad that she, and this book in particular (the early Pern books were not so bad) is predictable, inconsistant and sloppy. She might care to try reading her books and noticing the number of things that change from page to page. This is particularly infuriating, as it should not be so difficult to avoid. Unfortunately, she appears not to have made this one small effort. In this book, there was a) no character development worth speaking of, b) no surprises or involving moments, and c) much that rang false and superficial. Not worth reading, except on a desert island.

I like this book!
I liked this book, which was quite surprising since i never really liked science fiction before. im eager to read the next 2 books.

4 stars for the idea...
The idea is beyond wonderful, I REALLY want to live on this planet McCaffrey and Scarborough have created. That being said I've worried about McCaffrey for some time as her books in recent years have... well... Let's just say she may feel in a hurry or something. Elizabeth has written other books alone, that I have found enjoyable, and own, so this can't be all or even mostly her fault. I do read this trilogy over and over, but a good bit of that time is spent with the book face down and me daydreaming. And oddly enough only those darn cats, the planet itself, and the large beaming medicine woman from the novels feature at all in my daydreams...

Needs some work
Deitel books have been getting better and better with each new release. The later editions of "Java How To Program" were a vast improvement over the early editions of the book. Taking that experience, Deitel published this, their first C# book, in December 2001. The result is a mix of good and not so good. The overall approach to the topic is the standard Deitel method of covering topics in-depth with plenty of code samples. Anyone familiar with their C++ or Java books will recognize the Deitel formula immediately. In this case, the book suffers a little from being a first edition. The book covers all the main topics of the C# language, explains how to use Visual Studio, gives a primer on object oriented programming, and touches upon some advanced topics such as ADO, ASP, and web services. The book does have a feel of being rushed, however. Some of the examples seem either overly contrived or unnecessarily confusing. In some cases the explanations of the code are incomplete. For some reason, Deitel chose to print this book using only black and red instead of the multi-color print used in their Java books. Overall, this book is one of the better introductory C# books. It covers a much wider array of topics than many of the other C# books available and in general it covers them reasonably well. The CD does not include a student or demo copy of Visual Studio.

Another great book from the Deitel team
Superb. This book shows how it should be done. It covers just about everthing you need to know about C# - web services, XML, database access - it's all here in one book.

The many examples illustrate the concepts very well, and I particularly like the useful tips, 'common programming errors' and 'good programming practice' advice.

Surprisingly, the material is also accessible to people new to programming. There's sufficient introductory material (which experienced programmers can skip over) to allow program novices to start programming with C# - no need to start with Basic in a DOS window!

I have a few other books on C#, but this is easily the best.

Excellent book, worth the price
I had been looking for a C# book which also took care of teaching to exploit all the benefits of the .Net framework. I had stumbled with some books that were too inclined to either the language itself or the .net framework, but this book keeps a good balance between these two topics.

I purchased Professional C# from Wrox, but I saw too many typos in the text and even worse in the code!, so I went ahead and returned it later. I decided to spend some time at the bookstore comparing books and after much deliberation this one won me. I think it was a little bit expensive but it was worth it since it includes clear explanations, visual representation of what the samples do and how they work and best of all, it covers may topics I was interested in like XML, SOAP, Web Services, ASP.NET, etc.

I even liked the two color schema (red and black) in which it is printed.
