invaluable for anyone renovating an old garden
I purchased this book right after I bought an old house with a seriously overgrown garden. This book told me how to save the neglected fruit trees and rose bushes, and how to save the languishing perennial beds. Plus, it's a good guide to general garden maintenance. I'd love to see a west coast version.

Buber's own words still resonate
This gem is worthy of 100 stars. Bubar's early writings, the work with Gustav Landaur and Franz Rosenweig in synthesizing "Ich und Du", as well as his editorial comments to writers of Der Jude. A true Passover Feast of wisdom and compassion, even including his letter to Gandhi. The forward by Paul Mendes-Flohr serves as an excellant background.As vital today as he was at the birth of the State of Israel.

Great fun
"Men Seeking Women" is a genuinely entertaining collection of stories that all, in one way or another, center around sexual relations on the internet (with the curious exception of the last story by Po Bronson which, while good, doesn't seem to have anything to do with the rest of the collection). This is a really strong group of stories that explores the impact of the internet on the interactions between the sexes in a variety of different ways and from a variety of different angles. Some of the stories were better than others, of course, but I particularly liked "Payback Time" by Gary Krist, which takes as its theme the way men develop powerful crushes on enigmatic women they encounter on-line but of whom they know nothing; "Minesweeper" by David Liss, which is about a serial internet liar and how he justifies his awful behavior to himself; "The Face in the Glass" by Paul Hond, which is basically just effective and creepy; and "Prisoners of the Heart" which is, perhaps, not particularly realistic, but a whole lot of fun.

Succinct but Powerful Introduction to Paul
"Ministry and Message of Paul" is one of those hidden Christian books that needs discovery by churches. I came across this in a survey course at Wheaton College, and through it learned the context behind Paul's letters and journeys.

I recommend it for use in any Sunday School or CCD course looking to know what Paul was hoping to accomplish, who he was, and how God was working through him.

Though used in many college classrooms, Longenecker's book is not an overblown academic volume only understood by PhDs. Rather, it is comfortably accessible to anyone who is able to process any of the more popular history books, like "John Adams." Or, if a reader can understand the "New York Times," they'll have no trouble with "The Ministry and Message of Paul."

Much of the book is piecing together what is already known from Scripture with what is known of the times in which Paul lived. Longenecker cites from Patristic writers, namely Clement of Rome, Justin Martyr, Presbyter of Asia, Clement of Alexandria, Eusebius and Jerome. He also uses classical authors, such as Josephus, Ovid, Euripides. He refers several times to the Dead Sea Scrolls, and to various intertestamental books (like Sirach, both Maccabees, Baruch) The author takes several pages to explain how he used his sources, and to what extent their values were in preparing his text.

Paul, of course, wrote most of the New Testament. We see here how Paul was unflinchingly focused, and hardworking to organize people, lead churches, plan long sea journeys all for the purpose of spreading the gospel. Most of all, as Scripture was written then to be lived now, Longenecker spends a brief chapter on why Paul's message matters to this generation. He doesn't preach, but he does express a cogent presentation of Paul's modern significance.

Chapters include:
* Intro
* The Man and the Pharisee
* Conversion and Early Ministry
* First Missionary Journey
* The Jerusalem Council
* Second Missionary Journey
* Third Missionary Journey
* Imprisonments and Martyrdom
* The Pauline Message
* The Relevance of Paul for Today

The bibliography is 10 pages long, providing any serious student plenty of homework.

I fully recommend "The Ministry and Message of Paul" by Richard Longenecker.

Thank You!!!
I am the white partner an interracial relationship, and the mother of a beautiful biracial daughter. I came across this book years ago in my college library, and I loved it so much that I special ordered a copy of it through a local bookstore. I would just like to say thank you to the authors for writing it!

Thank you...

...for not stereotyping, analyzing, or otherwise trying to dissect interracial relationships.

...for letting the voices of the interracial families in the book shine through.

...for respectfully showing interracial families as normal, wonderful and beautiful!

...for the quote given by one of the people interviewed for the book - a white man married to a black woman took his son's pictures to a photo shop to be developed. When he returned to pick up the pictures, the white clerk at the store commented on how handsome the boy is, and told the boy's father: "Biracial children are the most beautiful children. They are God's way of showing the world that there shouldn't be bigotry". That quote made reading the book worthwhile!

Thank you indeed!

Excellent reading, very interesting & informative - Ramki
Once and Forever in Africa transports you into a real but magical world. The thrill of adventure combines with the "old jungle" way of perception to enthrall the reader all the way through.

I could not put it down after I started reading it. The basics of exchanging messages are so beautifully intertwined in the story. I would recommend this book for anyone interested in adventure, Africa and also for anyone interested in increasing the effectiveness of their perception and interactions.

Paul's Letters to the Corinthians (Richard Rohr's Scripture Library/10 Audio Cassettes)
Published in Audio Cassette by Credence Cassettes (1994)
Author: Richard Rohr
Amazon base price: $69.95

Rohr on Paul
Rohr's commentary on Paul's letters to the Church of Corinth is both intellectually and spiritually challenging to the listener. Rohr succeeds in accurately describing the circumstances surrounding Paul and the Church two thousand years ago as well as gives contemporary meaning to the listener. Rohr's grasp on the derivation of Paul's power through and in spite of his earthly weakness is a concept of which all Christians should make themselves aware.
