Not a Good Start on Sartre
If you are looking for a good, quick introduction to Sartre's Philosophy, I would not start with _Introducing Sartre_ from Totem Books, but with _Sartre For Beginners_ from Writers and Readers Publishing.

_Introducing Sartre_ focuses more on Biographical information, and brief Literary analysis of Sartre's novels and plays, than on his Philosophical works and their meaning. The illustrations are frequently just "fluffy" caricaturization instead of helping us understand characterization. Why would I want to struggle with trying to determine which figure is supposed to be Aron, Nizan or Sartre?

The book lacks a Glossary (which is further indication of its Biographical/Literary approach rather than Philosophical), and there is no Bibliography (all references must be gleaned from within the text.)

While as a whole, the book was a somewhat interesting read, the weakness of its philosophical examination allowed me to only rate it 3-Stars.

highly thought provoking . . . strange life at a glace
I just finished reading this and was amazed at how much I enjoyed reading about this man's intellectual challenges. While I didn't agree with everything he put forth, I did appreciate his attempt to say what he felt regardless of what others might say in response. While at times [many to be honest] he comes off as a whining, melodramatic, lonely, malcontent there is still something about his body of work that coerced me into attempting to understand the origin of my thoughts and actions over the years. Well worth the few bucks it takes to make it your own!

a must have historical text for Latino [homsexuals]
This is a collection of essays which compare [homosexuals] in the US with those in Latin America. It looks at male homosexuality from a historical, pre-colombian, and tribal perspective as well. Murray is an erudite anthropologist and therefore does not fall into the loopholes in scholarship that many white men who "study" homosexuality in Latin America have. The author is a bit of an essentialist and that may rub constructionists the wrong way. Of his books on international male homosexuality, this is the best one buy far. I think every [homosexual] Latino who wants to know their own [homosexual] Latino history should own a copy.

Best overview of male homosexuality in Latin America
There are some excellent books on male homosexuality in particular sites (Hector Carrillo and Joseph Carrier on Guadalajara, Mexico; Richard Parker on (Rio) Brazil; Manuel Fernandez on (San Pedro, Honduras)) but this collection ranges much more widely, including material on indigenous cultures as well as the dominant machista one that varies only slightly from Texas to Tierra del Fuego, and incipient "modern gay" homosexuality.

About half the chapters are by Stephen Murray, who has considered reports from many societies and done fieldwork in Mexico, Guatemala, and Peru. He is very critical of the romantic view of "tolerance" ("anything goes"/ "there's no sin south of the border") but includes chapters by the two main purveyors of that view (Paul Kutsche and Richard Parker). The book contains a multiplicity of scholarly views and data ranging from the usual literary texts to ethnography and survey research on sexual behavior of males who have sex with males in Latin America.

Finally!
Professor Horsley has repeatedly offered us books impeccably researched and annotated in great detail. Yet despite the promise of those works, Horsley has too often hidden his gifts behind an impenetrable wall of technicalities and minutia. In his attempts to demonstrate his intelligence, Horsley has sometimes made his writing obtuse and inaccessible to the average reader.

This, however, is not one of his failures. Here Horsley finally gets it right. Here Horsley fulfills the promise of his other works.

Examining the politics, sociology, psychology and religion of the renewal movements founded by John the Baptist, Jesus of Nazareth, and Paul of Tarsus, Horsley and Silberman weave an exhilarating narrative that exposes the historical roots of Christianity. Thoroughly comprehendible by the lay reader, without sacrificing scholarship, this book demonstrates that the authors can strike an appropriate balance between academia and popular reading.

Social Reform
Harsley and Silberman provide a social and economic setting of the time of Jesus and Paul (10 BCE - 70 CE) and the "Jesus Movement". Without addressing the religious truth of Christianity, they describe its social context and the impact it had on Palestine and the eastern Mediterranean.

The authors draw on recent archaeological finds to present a picture of life during this time. Along with the Bible and writings of Josephus, they use non-canonical early Christian writings, and Roman documents and inscriptions.

Bibliographical Notes in addition to the Bibliography make it easy to refer to more original sources in topics of interest.

The book is somehat hard to read, visually. This edition uses a very light serif font, and the paragraphs are rather long. Some familiarity with Biblical accounts of Jesus and Paul would be helpful for the reader.

Like Trying to Drink from a Fire Hose
Not for the casual reader or those unfamiliar with historical-critical method, this collection of essays provides remarkable insight into the most recent work in Pauline exegesis. Unfortunately, like some of Professor Horsley's other texts, this book is sufficiently techinical so as to effectively limit itself to the academic community. Once again, Horsley has failed to reach the masses.

An admirable springboard for group study
In Paul And Politics: Ekklesia, Israel, Imperium, Interpretation, Richard Horsley has assembled an impressive collection of contributors arguing against the traditional thinking of the past and dealing in original and provocative fashions with several interrelated issues running through Paul's letters and their subsequent interpretation within the context of Christian history. These issues include Paul and the politics of interpretation; Paul and the politics of the Roman Empire; Paul and the politics of Israel (with reference to the relations of Jews and Gentiles); Paul and the politics of churches)with respect to relations of men and women, slaves and freemen). Very highly recommended for personal and academic Christian history and theology reference collections and reading lists, Paul And Politics is a seminal and scholarly work that will prove an admirable springboard for group study and seminar discussions.

Many good essays
This compilation of essays on Paul and his theology, especially as it was influenced by his Damascus road experience, is well done, covers all the important issues in Pauline theology (eschatology, christology, ethics, law, women, spirit), and includes contributions from an impressive lineup of evangelical heavyweights.

Notable are the chapters by I. H. Marshall (eschatology), James Dunn (justification), Stephen Westerholm (law), Seyoon Kim (reconciliation), Gordon Fee (spirit), and Judith Gundry-Volf (women).

This collection would serve adequately as an introduction to Pauline theology.

Paul's Damascus Road experience put into perspective
The conversion of Paul on the road to Damascus has captured the imagination of many artists and writers down through the centuries. Indeed, the idea of a `Damascus road experience' has become part of the English language. However, it has also been the source of much scholarly debate and critique from an historical, sociological or psychological perspective (witness Krister Stendahl's 1963 essay `The Apostle Paul and the Introspective Conscience of the West'). This book is designed to examine the biblical material and ascertain the impact his experience might have had on Paul's understanding of Christology, Eschatology, his Gentile Mission, Justification, Reconciliation, Covenant Theology, the Mosaic Law, the Holy Spirit, Women and Ethics. On the whole the authors do a good job (although I cannot agree with Donaldson's views of Paul's Gentile Mission, which work so hard to avoid the idea that Paul was given the mission by Christ at conversion that he misses the mark altogether). The material is well thought through and, despite some of the technical sounding titles, the language is clear and understandable. Seyoon Kim on Reconciliation and Gordon Fee on the Holy Spirit were particularly thought provoking. This book is well worth a read by pastors, theological students or educated lay people who want to think about the impact that the scriptural record of Paul's conversion has had upon their understanding of the Christian faith.

Robot Manipulators : Mathematics, Programming, and Control

A good book, but only a close second
The notation in this book is quite a problem. John J. Craig's book "Introduction to Robotics, Mechanics and Control" does a better job with the notation and clairity of explanation. The math is perfectly applicable, once one gets through the notation. Since there are a few concepts in Paul's book that are not covered in Craig's, both books should be part of a library for anyone involved in the mathematics of robotics.

good book - Not for begginers
It's an exelent book, but it needs a previous knowledge of the matter, the notation sometimes is not raly clear but it had all the algoritms and formulas of robotics

OK book, but more for troubled marriages
I had hoped that this book would be more like "Intended for Pleasure," but it is more about case studies of troubles marriages and how negative emotions can affect the sex life in a Christian marriage. It's less of a manual, and more self-help.

Truly Becoming One
Problems in the bedroom? Never fear. *** BEGIN HERE*** Whatever you do, please don't go $pending thou$and$ of dollar$ on marriage counseling (like me) BEFORE you check out this handly little "how to" book written by the experts. Sex in the Christian Marriage is an excellent resource for any Christian couple interested in achieving the true spiritual oneness that God intended marriage to be. New and old Christians (even the really old ones) will benefit from the anatomical and practical information regarding the differences in the sexes. The content has a distinctly straightforward medical spin and lays out the kind of information you would expect to get in a good premarital sex education class or at a marriage seminar, but you probably won't because most people are not willing to teach others the detailed educational info you will find in this book. Plus, the M.D.'s are shrinks and at least one of them is bolder than the average shrink.

Since lack of knowledge may be a hindrance to some couples I'd recommend reading it just to be on the safe side and to be certain both mates have the same intentions and are fully committed to a healthy biblical oneness in marriage. Authored by two Christian M.D.'s and ex-pastor, Richard Meier, now a Marriage and Family Therapist practicing at the Paul Meier New Life Outpatient Clinic in Richardson, Texas, along with his wife, Lorraine, they've utilized many years of counseling experience to provide sound medical knowledge on a variety of disorders and encouragement through case studies with some very happy endings. Those who did not live happily ever after, however, have not been included. If you have a resistant spouse, don't waste another moment waiting for them to see things your way, read this book and make practical applications in your personal behavior which will affect your marriage. God will sort things out. You may find your spouse pleasantly surprised when you take the initiative to spice things up a bit. Locate the local candle shops, bath and body shops, Christian music store and pick up a new nightie or two while you're busy filling up that shopping cart.

This book is a MUST for all couples with young children in the home. The Enemy likes to attack young fathers while young mothers are busy focusing on the needs of small children. Men are often working longer hours in order for their wives to stay home with young ones and men face many temptations in the workplace. Every father of preschoolers ought to carry a copy of this book in his briefcase for some light reading at lunchtime. Some men may need to carry it in their front shirt pocket as a reminder or as a badge of marriage. (Great stocking stuffer too, the book is just the right size for your love's Christmas stocking!) Some men may get fresh ideas after reading this book and realize that women would prefer their time and attention versus material items.

Those dabbling in cyberporn or who think just one visit to Hooters or the Cafe Risque' for lunch won't hurt anything are deceived. (It's much like Lays Potato Chips, it's impossible to stop after just one visit to the chip & dip bowl but those thin chips deceive the eye and when you take a look in the mirror the results begin to affect you sooner than you think). Any married man who is surfing the net in his spare time looking for pornsites or exploring the Sports Illustrated swimsuit video should seriously be focusing that attention upon his wife INSTEAD, that is, if he doesn't want to be the Enemy's next target. It can happen to you. You don't know what you have until you've lost it. Consider this paperback to be preventive medicine. I recommend this great little guide book wholeheartedly to all newlyweds and oldyweds alike. It's certain to motivate you to celebrate with your very best friend the marriage God blessed you with and to assist you in achieving true oneness as God intended. Submitted by V.L. Wight

Detective Paul Turner is gay, a hunk, and back on the job!
For those of you who have read the other mysteries by Mark Richard Zubro, this mystery should be no different. Detective Turner is back and they are searching for the murderer of a federal judge. This New Years Eve murder keeps Turner and his partner busy as they travel through the gay area of Chicago looking for the killer. It is well paced, well developed characters and an intresting plot. If you have read Zubro before you will enjoy this one as much as the others.

The best of Zubro.
Easily the best of Zubro's novels. Snappy dialogue. Good plotting. No preachy diatribes. A look into an honest friendship between two detectives, one straight, one gay. And a good swipe at the pompous judiciary. Bravo Mark. Can we expect more of this caliber
