Richard the Third
Published in Hardcover by Routledge (01 January, 1955)
Author: Paul M. Kendall

As good an un-biased book as you will find.
This author has attempted an un-biased, historically accurate tale of Richard III. He uses all available references to present the story of an often misunderstood King. While he is not always successful in being unbiased, this book is worth the read

Kendall's "Richard III"
I have read every biography and reference source about Richard III, and Kendall's biography still stands as the best introduction to a study of this monarch and his times, and to the controversy which still, despite all the recent scholarship, surrounds him. Kendall is often criticised for his romanticised approach to his subject and for his slightly purple prose, but his book is intensely readable, clear, and scholarly. Later research ahs produced evidence which outdates some of Kendall's points, but his overview of the era and characters continues to be the best. If you're new to the period/subject, or want to get someone else interested, kendall's "Richard III" is the best starting point. I find it an invaluable research tool. Kendall's "The Yorkist Age" is also the best book I have ever found for an understanding of the era. Sources like the Richard III Society website will guide any interested reader to many other reputable sources, but Kendall stands out as the place to start. (And, unlike many writers who claim to be historians, Kendall uses historical sources, not prejudices and second-hand information.) Highly recommended.

One of the best pro-Richard III books ever!
This book makes me happy just thinking about it! It's a wonderful, friendly view of Richard III, chock full of historical facts. Kendall also puts in his own conjectures concerning many events (i.e. murder of the Princes) which are extremely interesting. A completely wonderful, informative read

really simplistic
Nothing on routers, switches, broadband. Although the ccopyright
is 2001, this book could have been written 10 years ago.
HOWEVER, if all you have is a dial-up modem, this book will help you.

Networking on a Shoestring
I run a small business and don't have the largest bank account. When I read other books and starting applying their advise, I figured it would cost thousands of dollars to get my network setup and ready for use. This book saved me a substantial amount of money, made it easy for me to build a network from scratch, and helped me create a networking environment that really works for my business. No, it doesn't contain a lot of fancy solutions that cost a lot to implement, but that's the point, isn't it? If you want a no-nonsense book that tells you how to build a network without all of the expense, then this is the book to buy.

Good down to earth advice on home networking
If you want to connect two or more pc's to share a broadband internet connection or printer, or need to set up a small office network, this is the book for you. Covers a multitude of topics, including wireless, phoneline, 10BaseT Ethernet, etc. Written for the not-too-technical reader.

What is normative conversion?
Peace writes an exceptional book that identifies the component parts of normative conversion using Paul's encounter with the Risen Christ on the Damascus road as the paradigm. He steps outside the evangelical box by taking these component parts and identifying them in the pilgrimage of the disciples of Jesus in mark's gospel. By identifying a gradual conversion process he allows mainline christians to reclaim the language of evangelism from fundamentalists.

An extaordinary book
This reader found Peace's take on conversion to be innovative and helpful. We live in an "instant age" (coffee, pudding, credit approval, and even conversion), and Peace reminds us that conversion, like love, is something that is often gradual and needs to be slowly nurtured. The main text and argument are well documented and supported by scripture, and the final section on practical application was a joy to read. Peace gives us back another model of conversion - and one we should not take too lightly. It is after all, the model which brought the original 12 to Christ.

Conversion in the New Testament
Richard Peace has already amply demonstrated he understands the application of theology in the real world. This book shows that he's a leader in understanding the dynamics at work in the bible and putting them in a context that makes sense in our time.

Excellent Sci-Fi Detective Series
Richard Paul Russo's superior series combines the best of the Science Fiction and Mystery genres into one package. Detective Frank Carlucci is an honest cop and a good detective in the hopeless corrupt world of the mid-21st century. He is determined to do the right thing despite the potentially negative consequences. The real strength of the book is the vivid desciptions of the streets of San Francisco that leave you feeling that it is inevitable that the world will turn out this way. Any of the books in this series, which include "Destroying Angel," and "Carlucci's Heart," are well worth owning.

If you like Bladeruner, you'll love Carlucci's Edge.
While not as strong as Destroying Angel, I found Carlucci's Edge to be an intense ride. It takes the reader through the near future tecno-streets of San Francisco and is a hell of a lot of fun. The story is good and has a strong plot. I like the gritty background and I hope to see many more novels by Mr. Russo in the future.

Masterful
This was the first Richard Paul Russo novel I read and so remains something of a favorite. I haven't been able to add anything substantive to the excellent reviews already here, so have refrained from posting a "me too" review.

But there's an angle which perhaps deserves to be mentioned, and that is Russo's use of the "backstory." All of his Carlucci novels IMPLY much of what has happened to society without really explaining it, and describe new technologies and fads almost in passing. The comparisons to "Blade Runner" refer to this fully-created future world of which our story concerns just a small corner.

For this reason, I found reading the novels out of order was not really that much of a detriment. The backstory of "Carlucci's Edge" was largely explained by "Destroying Angel," and the backstory of "Carlucci's Heart" was explained by "Carlucci's Edge," but these details are such a small part of this wholly-created new world that your bewilderment quickly settles into a willing suspension of disbelief anyway.

So don't be afraid to read them out of order. Once you've read one, you'll want them all anyway.

Unreal!: Eight Surprising Stories

Unreal (Story 7 Smart Ice-Cream)
I think that this story would be suited to children 7-12 years of age.

In this story there is a very smart boy who always gets 100 out of 100 for Maths and English.
He teases people with pimples and other problems, but Peppi the ice-cream man fixes these problems with ice-cream.
There is a twist at the end that you couldn't guess. Read to find out.

This was an okay story. It is pretty short but has enough infomation to get the story line across. There were a few funny parts that make the story interesting.

Great!! Loved the funny stories
This book is great, my favorite story is called "Without a Shirt". It is about a boy that cannot say a sentence or paragraph without ending it with the phrase - "Without a shirt". Of course there is more to the story, but I think it nice to with hold the ending for the reader.

I think that this book was very interesting and creative.
Once I started reading this book I couldn't put it dowm because the stories were very interesting with a good sense of humor. I really like Paul Jennings and all of his books so I gave him 5 stars

Solid science, good advice
As a person who was thin for about the first 30 years of my life, I haven't been able to figure out my "problem" with not being able to lose the weight I've gained. I know WHAT to do (reduce calories and exercise), but I lack the motivation to do it, and also feel hungry almost all of the time. Dr. Rivas' book explained the brain science behind my situation and even helped me peg the events/timeframe that this became an issue for me. I will be talking with my Dr. about his recommendations, although I'm glad he gives natural supplements as well as prescription medications as alternatives. This is not another "6 weeks to a great body" type book. Turn Off the Hunger Switch provides practical recommendations - as long as you're willing to ingest natural or pharmaceutical supplements to achieve your goals! P.S. Calories and exercise do matter as well, but they're not the end-all and be-all according to Dr. Rivas. His ideas are worth reading and considering if you're not having success with the regular approaches.

Turn Off the Hunger Switch
I am and EMT and have to grab a meal whenever and whereever I can. It's not easy to get good nutrition that way. When I read this easy-to-read book and began to try to figure out my own profile, I started trying different supplements and amino acids that Dr. Rivas recommended in the book. In 4 months I lost 34 pounds and have maintained the loss for the last 5 months. The first 16 pounds were lost Without using Phentermine. I've lost from a size 18 down to a 12. Before that I had not been able to lose any weight in the past 25 years. This is the easiest thing I've tried. The hardest thing is just swallowing the vitamin and supplement pills every day and that is only discipline!

Turn off the hunger switch forever
Recently my mom was a patient of Dr. Rivas, so it was no suprise for me to see that Dr. Rivas wrote a book. My mother lost 80 lbs. on Dr. Rivas's diet and the book gave me an understanding to how the program and medicine works for her specific brain type and body type. I found the book very informative and interesting to read. My mom tried every diet imaginable and Dr. rivas was the only one in the medical field who saw her problem as not her fault and cureable. This book makes it easy for people to go to their doctor with a knowledge that they can be cured of obesity and there is help. I recommend this book highly for anyone who has fought to lose weight and needs answers.

This is a good book...
But you need to have a few comercial plug-ins and this means spend money, instead of this you can learn many tricks other people learn with experience and time. I really don't know if the book isn't good enoght or 3D Studio is very incomplete, filling the holes with expensive IPAS.

3d Studio &Hollywood Gaming Effects
First of all, I want to say that I'm from Sweden, so please be indulgence with my language. I've read the magnificant book of 3d Studio & Hollywood Gaming Effects. I used both 3d Studio and 3D max for the tutorials, and I was quite impressed. The book is based on examples and tutorials, made by pros'. The examples in the book are very detailed, and are understandble, even for an amateur like me. And the best thing is that, if you dont understand what they're talking about, just put in the CD-Rom (that comes with the book) find the chapter for the example, and run it. There you have it, step by step, all the exaples in the book on the CD-Rom are explained on the CD-Rom too. A book for both amateurs and proffesionals, that increase the flexibilaty you need to become a graphic artist. And even if you're using 3d Max, the examples in the book - and on the CD-Rom - works properly. Since Max and Studio are based on the same system. The examples in the books are well illustrated, and the layout makes it very easy to find and read. You learn new things every time you browse through the book. And just by watching the exapmles on the CD-Rom, you can load a project - and go through it - see for your self how it's build. And in that way learn some useful hints & tricks. A low cost educational book, that you can get useful hints & tricks from, that you cant get from anywhere else. As I said, my English is bad. I sometimes can't find a way to express my feelings in words. But it is a good book. I rated the book with a 9. Now that, is self explained. Happy rendering, Your Friend In The Jungle Of 3D.

3D Effects For The Experts By The Experts
When I first picked this book up I was expecting it to be another book on teaching the beginner how to do simple effects. I could never have been so wrong. Starting at an advanced level, the book assumes you not only have lots of experience with 3D Studio, but some additional software tools as well. Then, it shows you, in detail, how to create certain effects, all of which can be easily adapted to your scenes. Some of the effects include overlaying your animation with video so that it 'fits' together, or extended use of 'Bones Pro' and 'MetaBall Modelers'(which are plug-ins for 3D Studio) to create organic models.

For beginners, I recommend "3D Studio Special Effects/Book and Cd Rom" while this book is more for users with a solid grip on 3D Studio.

I was disappointed with this book
I found this book too basic. Most of the book is about choosing the right equipment. There are only a few chapters on flying. I found alot of this information by searching Deja News and reading rec.models.rc.helicopter.

Excellent starting point. Great book
I really enjoyed the book. Read it from cover to cover, then again, before making the plunge and buying my first heli.
The book is somewhat outdated on a few things (gyroscope, radio gears), but give the newcomer a good understanding of what it takes to build and fly RC helicopters. As the title says, it only covers the basics, but does a pretty good at that.

Great book for beginners!
This book is very well setup and organized for the beginner in mind. It does not assume that you know everything, and by the end of the book, you'll know enough to finally fly a helicoptor. However, the tech info is slightly outdated (1995), but it is still very helpful. I'd strongly recommend it. I'd also recommend getting Milt's Helicopter videos too!

Closer Than Ever: Vocal Score

Authors: David Shire, Richard Maltby, and Paul McKibbins
Amazon base price: $35.00
List price: $50.00 (that's 30% off!)
Average review score:

Contrived, but fun nonetheless
The score to a reveiw by the almost infamous duo of Maltby and Shire, Closer than Ever contains some memorable songs on an extremely vague topic, using "doors" as a metaphor for choices and chances one must face in life. This metaphor expounds itself into a wide array of songs on everything from a father having his first child to the history of Muzak. This review is a little more enjoyable than the trite "starting here, starting now" by the same authors. However, be advised that Maltby and Shire have the almost impressive ability to say nothing with so many words. Still, the music is both enjoyable and entertaining. Maltby and Shire began the review when a song from their musical "Baby" was cut from the show. They began to throw in other random songs into what they called their "urban file" until they were asked to put up a small cabaret in 1987. "Closer Than Ever" was the result.
This is the complete score to the show. It contains all of the vocal harmonies and counterpoint that each of the 4 performers are supposed to sing in the show, as well as the piano accompaniment. In response to the last review, a Vocal Score is literally a piano reduction of the music used in an actual performance of a show with complete dance music, scene change music, etc. They are usually a bit pricey. Vocal Selections are usually a simplified piano reduction with (sometimes) both melody and chord symbols written in. In the hands of a good pianist, either will suffice for a recital performance or otherwise.

Unfairly Neglected
I just finished performing in a run of this show at Univ of MD and I can honestly say that I'm in love with this show. Musically and lyrically, it was written with such honesty and truthfulness -- none of that flambouyent loudness and sillyness associated with other musicals, just the truth. The music and words work so well together! All of the songs are wonderful expressions of situations that can happen in anyone's life. "One of the Good Guys" and "Life Story" are examples of that fact. Also, Shire notates the notes to the words so well. Shire and Maltby's sound partnership is very evident. This makes for a easy interpretation by the performer, such as in "What am I Doin'?" how the higher notes are used in points of emotional elevation. But that's how it is with all the songs. So simple but yet, you can tell, the intricities were carefully and delicately thought out.

What I just can't express is how real and honest the songs are. This is the best example to show of a musical. What's a shame is how unknown and unpopular this musical is. No one seems to understand and find a way to unlock the realness of this unfairly neglected piece of American repertoire. It needs to be introduced to the mainstream audience.

Well, at least I can tell you. But you must spread the world. Tell your friends, relatives, tell all! Do not let this sink into the musical land of the unknown.

Great Music. Great Audition Material
This musical is one of the best I've heard. The music is writen EXACTLY how it is played in the original cast. I HATE when the music is written with the melody line played. Let the vocalist sing it's part and the piano play it's part. Thankfully, this book is like that. There is no plot to the entire peice. Each song tells it's own story. It is great for auditions. It is modern enough for the newer musicl theatre auditions, yet some of the songs are old style for the older musical auditions. In short (yeah right) it's a great book.

better than neal stephenson and william gibson
not cyberpunk, no strange technology, the setting is a future san francisco/united states where there is numbness to the power of the commercial ruling class. the story is part epidemic, part human drama, dads and children, love stories. weaves a powerful story around a strange and unusual environment. i have not read the other carlucci books but plan to put them on my list.

Russo does it again! Another cyber punk noir classic!
I thought this novel was one of the best I have ever read. You are drawn into Russo's darkly beautiful world, and it is so much fun. He is as good, if not better than William Gibson. His prose is richly textured and detailed. I hope he doesn't make us wait long for another great story.

Another terrific Carlucci novel
Carlucci's Heart is the latest, and maybe the best, of Russo's novels featuring Lt. Carlucci, a homicide detective in futuristic San Francisco. Russo's previous novels, "Destroying Angel" and "Carlucci's Edge" are other great stories, and it is not necessary that they be read chronologically to be enjoyed. The stories are suspenseful and move well, and dialogue is sharp and real. The real strengths of Russo's books are: the vivid portrayal of our civilization to come, and the character of Carlucci, a good man doing his best in a struggle against a world going to hell. DEFINITELY WORTH CHECKING THIS BOOK OUT.
