What happened to the Great Quillow???
As a fifth grader,I was enthralled by this book, partially because of the illustrations in the orginal edition. I have thought of it often during the past 55 years (I am now almost 64) and was overjoyed when I found that it was avaiable, and in print. I ordered it, and waited for it to arrive with eager anticipation. Imagine my horror when it arrived with illustrations totally out of keeping with the spirit of the Great Quillow, and certainly a far cry fro the originals. The great Quillow was a peaceful person, did not require force of arms or strength to overcome the Giant. The ugly and distorted illustrations in the new editions are a travesty. Is there any way to find a copy of the original edition?

WONDERFUL story
Even though the story is rather long (it takes me about 30 minutes to read it aloud cover to cover), it keeps our children fully engaged, and the illustrations are absolutely fantastic. This is one of those books we will always keep and pass on from one generation to the next.

Wonderful story for ALL ages.
Marvelous illustrations. Great story about how brains can win out over braun. The Great Quillow is a character to be admired. Told with humor and feeling. I purchased my own copy to keep. One of the best.

Review
This book was about a little girl that lost her mitten while she was outside playing in the snow all day. She decided to trace everything that she did that in so that hopefully she can find her mitten. She went everywhere looking for her mitten. She had quite the imagination on her. One of the thoughts she had was that an animal stole her mitten. She has many ideas of what happened to her mitten that she lost and all of them are very imaginative. It starts to rain so she decided to go in to get out of the rain. When she goes inside she sees that the snowman she built is melting away some. Her mitten was in the snowman and as the rain melted the snowman her mitten appeared as his heart.
This book is a very cute tale and is a great book that will keep children's imaginations going right along with the girl who lost her mitten. It has great colorful pictures that hold children's attention also. The author really shows imagination with the ideas that the little girl thinks of for where her mitten might be. This is a book that children will love. This book really grabs your attention with the imagination and the pictures in it.

Fun Story
This imaginative story is about a little girl who spends all day building a huge snowman and playing in the snow. When she realized that her red mitten was missing. She could not bare loose another mitten seeing how every winter thus far she had lost one. The little girl decides to retrace her steps that day and she came up with fun ideas of where her mitten could be. While on her mission she finds various other articles that belong to her friends with whom she spent the day with, but her mitten was no where to be found. After searching high and low it starts to rain. The little girl goes inside in an attempt to get out of the slushy mess. After the rain passed the little girl went outside to find that her mitten had gotten stuck in her snowman when she was building it. The mitten was visible now that some of the snow had melted from the rain. The snowman appeared to have a very bright red heart.
The author had to have been so creative. This story allows the kids to follow the little girl through the search of the mitten and guess along with her. Then the fun ending supplied a great surprise and meaningful finish. The snowman was made with love.
I liked this book because it was easy to follow and the fun plot and great pictures would easily catch a child's attention and keep them interested and guessing throughout the book. I found the pictures to be beautiful as well. Steven Kellogg has always been a favorite illustrator of mine.

Greatly Improved Missing Mitten Book
Well known Children's book illustrator, Steven Kellogg, has just freshened his "Mystery of the Missing Red Mitten," first published in 1974, with a new "The Missing Mitten Mystery." The brightly colored Steven Kellogg illustrations make this favorite tale memorable. Especially nice are the sunset hues of bright yellow and orange, as they appear in the sky and are reflected on the bule snow. Ralph has just lost his fifth mitten of the season. He knows he is in trouble, so he begins the search, which comprises the majority of the story. At last, he gives up and goes home. Later, he looks through the living room window, and sees the snowman he had built that day. The snowman has a mysterious red spot on his chest. He has sported a red mitten heart! Mystery solved! This book is perfect for gift giving, along with a pair of red mittens of course. Ages 3 to (whatever ages kids stop losing their mittens), would enjoy this tale. "Mitten Tree" by Candace Christiansen, "The Woodcutter's Mitten" by Loek Koopmans and Jan Brett's "The Mitten" would be good companions to this updated story.

Gentle Look at the Trials of Establishing the Pecking Order
Steven Kellog somehow keeps his many books fresh and entertaining. "Much Bigger than Martin" captures the angst of sibling rivalry by exploring how the younger brother reacts and rebels to the injustices, both real and perceived, from being the youngest kid.

Mr. Kellog is never preachy, but infuses this universal tale with humor and wit. As always, his illustrations fit the story to a "T" and reveal not just what is happening, but, more importantly, what the younger brother wants to have happen.

For the younger kids in the family, this is a great book!!
I remember reading this book in grade school and I just loved it. I was the baby in the family and my brother always got to do stuff that I wished I could and I sometimes wished I was bigger like the boy in the book. I have two boys of my own now and cant wait to share this book with them. It definatly puts a smile on my face watching my children enjoying books that I loved when I was little and really enjoy to read still..

Just wait till I grow up and I'm bigger than you!
Even if you're not the second or third child, you can relate to how hard it is to be little. Martin has ALL the privileges. Martin has ALL the fun. Martin's downfall is plotted by his little brother in delicious illustrations with Kellogg's keen eye for the ridiculous and affection for the underdog. This was a family favorite, especially for the youngest one!

children love this ryhming game
My 5 year old girl got this book out of the library and is now begging me to buy it. This book is a great sing-song version of the jump-rope game we played as a child. The different ryhmes are fun and a learning experience.

The Cutest Child's Book of All Time!!!!!!!
I had this book for a very long time, and I loved it! It's a cute book that teaches children the alphabet and it's a cute game that I used to play when I was younger. I still have this book, and I have a reason to: When I become a mother and have kids of my own, I'll be able to read it to them! : )

What's a Beebee Bird?
This is a cute bedtime book. We meet a lot of tired animals in the zoo who are trying to get to sleep when a baby bird keeps them up with his singing. So, to get back at him, all day long they make noise and cause the bird to miss his nap. That night, he is so tired that he doesn't sing and everyone is able to get some sleep. I had fun reading this book to some kids for nap time and they enjoying the silly repeating phrase "beebeebobbi" - especially when I said it the way that all of the different animals would. I did have to take a star away because at times the text can be difficult to read - especially for beginning readers who are trying to follow along while reading over your shoulder. Also, it can be a little bit too exciting when trying to get children to settle down for a nap.

Why 3 stars?:
A fun book with some funny moments, but some of the text can be difficult to read. Parts can be a little too exciting when trying to have kids fall asleep. All in all, a good book that should be used carefully.

Why only males at the zoo?
This is a cute book, first written in 1963 & reillustrated by the wonderful Steven Kellogg, who has used his talent well here. But I found it disappointing that everyone identified by gender was male: the bear, lion, elephant, the bird and the zookeeper. Sure, it was written a while ago but presumably there were female animals then, too, right?

Funny for the whole family
This book is funny in a way the whole family can relate to. Parents and siblings who have been kept awake by a baby will especially enjoy the comic view of their predicament. Those who do the waking will enjoy the baby bird's expressing their viewpoint. The artwork is great at showing the exhausted and irascible animals who are kept awake by the cheerful baby bird. The typesetting is very clever, too.

A Jumping-Good Book!
What a wonderfully exciting look at counting! This book andits author teach children many things without even trying. Fromcounting to sequencing, and frogs to action words, this book does it all. The illustrations and text are definitely designed with the young, learning reader in mind. Thank you for such a great addition to my math related pieces of literature!

Mom held at gunpoint in a picture book? Scary!
My kids love dogs and stories involving dogs, and the other Pinkerton books are no exception. "Pinkerton, Behave!", however, features a burglar creeping into Mom's bedroom at night and holding her at gunpoint! Pinkerton coming to the rescue notwithstanding, this is much too frightening for my children. I would argue that such visuals are inappropriate for children of picture-book age, period. The fun and humorous elements of the plot could easily have been acheived without portraying such creepy and violent image, and I am disappointed in the author as well as the publishing house for their choices in creating this book.

Quite a surprise!
I went to the library with my 4 year old son and just grabbed the book. We have read Pinkerton stories and have always loved them and I didn't even look through the book or even much at the cover until that night when we settled in for night time stories. I then realized that there was a "robber" with a gun on the cover. I thought to myself, "How did I not see this before?" and by then it was too late. My son saw it and had a zillion questions so we read it. I was shocked by the content! We are very open with our son about anything he asks and I explained that yes, there are "robbers" and yes, people do get into dangerous situations like that. I felt very uncomfortable having to almost outright lie to him and tell him that, "No, noone will break into our house because we lock our doors, etc..." How else do you explain this to a 4 yo at bedtime?! We got through it and son loved the book. I thought it was very cute that Pinkerton was confused but could have done without the break in part. I feel it could have been as cute without that. Very irresponsible in a child's book, but I guess I learned a lesson to read the books before we check them out even when they are written by someone you consider "safe".

Won't Pinkerton ever learn!
This is a book about Pinkerton...a fun-loving great dane pup that does things his own way. He's fun, he's happy, he's huge, and he doesn't seem to be able to learn a thing. When he's sent to obedience school he helps the other dogs unlearn everything they've learned, and he gets kicked out! (Hope they got their money back.)

But when it's crunch time, Pinkerton's owner knows what to do to help the family.

Join the fun by reading this wonderful book. I read this book LOOOOOOOOOOOOOONG before I had any children of my own...now it's a favorite of the whole family.

5 stars all the way for Steven Kellogg's "Pinkerton, Behave!" It has a great storyline, wonderful illustrations, and is a good time for all. This is the book that made me a Steven Kellogg fan way back when.

I urge you to give it a try. You's love it (so will your children)!

Good Illustrations kept it going
A legend about a boy who falls out of his family wagon as they are crossing the country. He is forced to raise himself in the wide open west and learn how to protect his life.
This was an ok book from my point of view. The illustrations were amazing they really kept my attention. However, the writing was nothing too spectacular. The story of Pecos Bill is one of adventure and I just didn't feel like this version of the story captured the really adventure of the legend. This book sends the message of standing up for yourself and never giving up on your dream. I think it did a good job of getting the message across and my second graders knew what the message was as soon as a closed the book.

Bland, but the Pictures are Grand
This mild, but event-filled re-telling of the Pecos Bill story lacks the incorrigible air of tongue-in-cheek humour and bold-faced lies of the typical tall tale. However, and especially if your young`uns never heard a tall tale, the wonderful illustrations will partially make up for this. When we started to read this book, we thought those sweet-faced, round-eyed, snub-nosed cowboys looked a little familiar: this guy is the same feller who illustrated HOW MUCH IS A MILLION? which we like alot. My boys love the snake lasso, and we return many times to the fantastic "critter" that Bill wrassles into submission. But breaking-in "Widder-maker" is an let-down after that adventure, I am afraid. I recommend Adrien Stoutenburg`s AMERICAN TALL TALES for older children (9-12yrs) which has few illustrations but whose style is far better suited to the dramatic and poetic nature of the tall tale genre. My seven-year old loves to hear me read those aloud.

Chicken Little
Published in Paperback by Addison-Wesley Educational Publishers (1999)

Chicken Little in the Brave New World
This version of Chicken Little is too convoluted and politically correct for my enjoyment. I enjoy a twist on an old tradition sometimes, but this was too different for me. It was a brand new story.

Modern Version of Henny Penny
If you are looking for the old fashioned "The sky is falling, must tell the King" then don't buy this book. The book you are looking for is titled "Henny Penny". Both books depict the same chain reaction of hysteria and are both well written. But, if you want the one that you remember from many moons ago, get Henny Penny.

Hilarious romp
No, this isn't the traditional version of Chicken Little. It is, however, sly, funny, and well written and illustrated. As an adult, I really appreciate children's books that have a sense of humor and a vocabularly that's not "dumbed down." Our copy of this book goes in a bookshelf in my room so it doesn't get ripped up any more than it is already--I want to make sure I have a copy of this one for keeps.

Kellogg's version of Chicken Little deserves to be as much a classic as "The Three Little Wolves and the Big Bad Pig." It makes a great gift--too many kids have bookshelves filled with colorless Disney rehashes that parents dread reading aloud. Books like this one are one of the best ways to help kids learn that reading is entertaining and satisfying.
