Excellent Spirituality 101
Rabbi Jeff Astrachan and Pastor William Grimbol provide a wonderful exploration of the struggles and successes of all people. Each section focuses on a big question: Who, What, When, Where, Why, and How, with one of the pastors writing a very accessible and uplifting discussion with the other writing a short response.

Since both Rabbi Astrachan and Pastor Grimbol are from the liberal ends of their faiths, they rarely disagree. Much more common is a statement such as Grimbol writing, "Again, I find myself in agreement with most of what Jeff has to say. In fact...my main response would be, 'ditto.'"

This isn't a book to find the conflicts between Judaism and Christianity or to compare the nuanced differences between the faiths. Rather it is a chance to value the common hopes and responses of two faiths when one faces life and death, pain and joy, or just in day-to-day living.

Whatever your faith (or absence thereof), whatever your journey, everyone can find a valuable resource in this excellent spirituality and life primer.

Even Weavings
Sometimes less is more: POWER LANGUAGE aims for accuracy, honesty, impact, logic and strength. Familiarly short simple words in a short simple style start it up. Varied sentence lengths keep it going, with the shorter sentences making the most important information stand out; with a topic sentence, its support and conclusion making up a tightly powerful paragraph; and with the two strongest sentence positions for the most meaningful points being the first and last words. Too many opinions and statistics get in the way: speaking or writing, think of the listener or reader first; and make everything powerfully clear, simple and straightforward. Jeffrey McQuain's tightly woven style and text set business and other writing on course: his book has the answers to Jefferson D. Bates's WRITING WITH PRECISION, Peter Elbow's WRITING WITH POWER, Paul A. Eschholz's LANGUAGE AWARENESS, and Marcia Lerner's WRITING SMART.

Selling in the era of behavioral genetics
I've read and reviewed a number of Kevin Hogan's books, this one is probably his best work (along with Irresistible Attraction). What sets this book aside from every other sales book I've read is the brilliant weaving of hypnotic stories with truly razors edge scientific advances in behavioral genetics.

The authors of this book have the greatest respect for salespeople and go so far as to say, "Salespeople make the world go around. Without the salesperson, nothing happens...no one gets paid." Clearly Hogan and Horton are salespeople themselves. They tell their stories in a most elegant and unique fashion. More importantly, those of us who sell for a living, sense an understanding that is rarely experienced in books that beat "overcoming their objections," "scripts" and "close hard close often techniques."

There is no question that what makes this book stand out are the three chapters about how to ask questions and present information based upon people's genetic bias. Hogan goes into great detail about sex and selling, the flight/fight response, the drive to eat, connect and acquire...and he details how you communicate so you push all the right instinctual buttons at the right nanosecond. I confess I had never considered these concepts...ever. I've been to see Tony Robbins, Brian Tracy, Tom Hopkins and Zig Ziglar numerous times. They are all incredible, but even they don't have this material...or if they do, they haven't presented it to my knowledge.

More specifically Hogan breaks down the genetic biases of individuals into key drives and desires which he claims are not original to his thinking but collected from William James and Stephen Reiss. However, with the credited assistance of Hogan's colleague Richard Brodie, they ambitiousl detail utterly new ways to get inside of the mind of your customer and show exactly how to help that customer see your product in it's best possible light.

Hogan's co-author Horton, contributes with NLP techniques, many of which we have seen and several we haven't. I took my NLP training in Chicago and now I wish I would have taken my training with Horton as his contributions are significant to this book. I'm not an afficianado of the martial arts but I felt his metaphors from his experience in the martial arts were useful in understanding the sales process.

This book only has one weakness and that is that it reads unevenly at times. It sometimes feels as if you are reading a long article after another long article. However, this criticism is really to be taken in the context of its enormous contribution to the field of selling and really to every salesperson out there.

Selling Yourself to Others is based on selling with integrity and yet offers you scientific insights into the human mind that make you feel like you can turn the keys at will. After you read this, you will probably get pangs of guilt for having so much power. Once you get over it, you have a manual that likely won't be matched for many years.

There are also a number of truly funny stories that made me laught out loud. This is a serious book about how to sell but once per chapter you simply find yourself unable to control yourself with laughter. This is amazing stuff. Hogan's best work.

Five stars.

Delivers On Its Promises
This textbook is well-conceived and well-executed. The authors have a strong background in science as well as a keen interest in making technical subjects accessible to a broad audience. They have succeeded in presenting statistics with a minimum of mathematics. Emphasis is placed upon the application of these concepts to real life situations taken from news sources, the internet and individual experiences. The graphics, sidebars, focus sections and case studies are timely, relevant, engaging, lucidly written and enlightening. A one-page epilog provides a nice summary statement to the entire textbook. A glossary, index, answer key , appendices and suggestions for further reading are also included.
This is an excellent textbook for a general education student whose career would not require the direct use of statistical tools. None of the usual tables are discussed or present in this textbook, but all of the main topics are treated in a thorough and thought-provoking fashion. The authors' discussion of correlation and causality is especially good, although their definition of causality in the glossary as " the relationship present when one variable is a cause of another " is circular. Instead, the authors should reiterate their assertion from the main text that a "cause" is a "physical mechanism" based upon a "physical model" which is generally acceptable as a scientific explanation.

Time on Target: The World War II Memoir of William R. Buster

"Time on Target" Hits Mark
Most biographies about World War II participants have focused on two distinct groups of persons: those that served as high ranking military or political leaders or those who served as ordinary soldiers in the field. This follows the well-established practice of studying history from either above or below. While both of these types of studies are important and useful, those in the middle strata of a conflict can enlighten and inform on a much broader range of topics. General William R. Buster's memoir "Time on Target" is a first-rate example of this type of scholarship.
Buster recounts his personal and professional experiences from his graduation from the West Point class of 1940 to his command of a battalion as a Lieutenant Colonel. Buster was one of the first officers in the US Army to begin training with armor and mechanized artillery, and was instrumental in development of tactics and theories for use by these forces. Buster was assigned to the Second Armored Division, and served throughout North Africa, Normandy, and central Europe with this organization. With his unique positions witin the military higherarchy, Buster recounts wonderful episodes involving general officers to privates.
Buster also observes non-military functions and activities, which makes this a unique World War II narrative. He gives colorful accounts of travelling the country in his newly purchased Pontiac convertable, courting his wife-to-be Mildred, and army-base life. Buster also tells of the death of close friends and interaction with refugees and homeless families in Europe. The Postdam Conference and refugee-assistance mission are also documented by Buster.
This book is a useful tool for anyone interested in World War II. Buster relates military, social, and technical information from one of the most unique perspectives during the war. While other works may give more details or a better overall coverage of the war, few can match Buster in the description of his personal wartime actions and impressions.
