A great introduction
This well-illustrated volume provides an excellent introduction to the Anglo-Saxon period. The "picture essays" regarding coinage and other specialized topics help provide detail without interrupting what amounts to historic narrative.

The problems of using source documents are detailed as well as the triumphs of modern archealogy in expanding our understanding of this period of history.

The photographs, drawings, and maps compliment and support the text nicely.

Highly recommended as an introduction to the period and its people.

The best introduction available to Anglo-Saxon history.
Written by three of the leading historians of the Anglo-Saxon period, this is easily the best introduction to its subject. The writing is authoritative yet accessible, giving a good idea not only of the course of Anglo-Saxon history, but also of the problems with the sources and of disputes within the historical community. Only in the final chapters, by Eric John, do major historical disputes sometimes go unnoted; one would not know, e.g., from his discussion of Harold Godwineson that some historians greatly respect Harold, or that not all historians believe that Edward the Confessor firmly intended William of Normandy to succeed him. To his credit, however, John's presentation here is more orthodox than elsewhere (for his unadulterated views, see his contentious and delightful Reassessing Anglo-Saxon England).

The physical presentation of the book is far more attractive than is usual for textbooks. It is in a large format and lavishly illustrated, including a number of color pictures, and has several good maps of England (although it is curiously lacking in maps illustrating the European context of English history, and it could also use genealogical tables to help sort through some of the myriad characters). The bibliography is good up to 1981, the original date of publication, but unfortunately it was not updated when Penguin reissued the book, and thus cannot take account of the scholarship of the past two decades. It also has, regrettably, "secret" endnotes at the back of the book, not signaled in the text, which often lead the reader to primary source material and some secondary discussions; it is well worth the reader's effort to seek out the endnotes periodically.

In short, The Anglo-Saxons is highly recommended for anybody seeking a general introduction to the history of this period. My highest praise is that when I taught a university course on Anglo-Saxon history, this is the only book I considered for a main textbook.

Outstanding Book for vb.net Beginner to start with
Simple, practical and it really work out for beginner to get into the .net world with good understanding. I think that it is good for the adcadmic institue to use this book for .net beginner class too.

Great Book for Beginners in the .NET world
As an experienced programmer in the IBM mainframe world I found David's book just the right blend of theory, humor, and practical examples. The code examples are clean and easy to follow and work! The extra attention to the setup of IIS, MSDE and WebMatrix was especially helpful. This is a great book to get started with ASP.NET technologies using a great tool "WEBMATRIX" . This book is for beginners so experienced ASP programmers will not find it advanced enough. And it is not a web HTML/CSS book....

calcucus is DA bomb!!
when i was back in the vietnam war, my commander made us all take calcucus. he said a whole bunch of loogie about how it would make us better soldiers. well, little did i know that he was right. one day, when i was out in the heat of the battle, i came upon an unaware guerilla who did not know calucucus, i immediately figured out the derivation of my rifle and with a few simple calcultions, i was able to blow my opponent out of the water from several feet with my high powered rifle. take calcuclus and save your life and your country's life. go calcucluals!!!!

Book wonderful and easy to understand; Saxon does it again!
This book teaches the advanced topics of calculus in a manner that one does no learn one day and forget in a month. The Saxon series learning premise is that of an 'incremental development', which means once a skill is acquired and it is practiced, another fascet is added, and then another until you have a full understanding of the material. This book is great for anyone at all who wants to learn Calculus; not just students. It is recommended that the book "Advanced Mathematics" should preceed this because the first part "Calculus" quickly reviews all the topics in that book. So, I say get the book and try it; it is the best way to learn Calculus!

This lovely little volume is a gift that keeps on giving. Its essays are simple, elegant, soulful, inspiring. And thought-provoking. You may well find yourself searching your own Christmas memories, and finding gems you had long forgotten. Which is what this book is all about -- seeing, hearing, remembering those things we take for granted, and cherishing them anew. This is a book to feed the heart, and the soul. And it's just the right size for stocking stuffing!

an excellent, readable, oncology textbook
This textbook while being comprehensive enough,is enjoyable to read. As opposed to other major oncology textbooks, it provides definitive conclusions regarding treatment and is not overly burdening to the reader. Because Oncology changes so quickly, one could likely get by with this textbook and following the published literature.

It's an excellent consultation book.
The book is about the latest treatment in oncology. It's easy to obtain information out of this book. It has everything breast, lung, colorectal cancer, etc.

Collected Poems

Essential reading
You don't know me or my tastes from Adam. Why bother listening; well because I don't have an axe to grind or dollar to make.

James K Baxter is a great poet. Being a parochial New Zealander helps, but the way JKBaxter moves me spells 'good' in 6ft letters above my head.

Start with something fun 'An Ode on Mixed flatting' 1967 and work you're way round this collection. There is something for any mood you're in.

dorje@greenkiwi.co.nz

alcoholism,catholicism and wild bees.
JKB is THE MOST underrated underappreciated poet to come out of the antipodes. This is not light reading!. Don't pick it up as before sleep fodder It deserves at least an entire cold, drizzly day by the fire.

Collecting Phil Spector: The Man, the Legend, and the Music
Published in Hardcover by Popular Culture Ink (1991)
Authors: John J. Fitzpatrick and James E. Fogerty
Amazon base price: $40.00
Average review score:

Great book about the greatest producer of popmusic ever!
This is a really helpful book to gain all the information you did not have about Phil Spector, the elusice en reclusive King of the Symphonies in Popmusic. There are so little books written about the man, that every single one you can get your hands on is a gift. This book certainly is. Lots of information, great pictures of very rare sleeves, you may never see in reality, because of their rarity. Get this book, while you still can and enjoy the life and times of the mad genius Phil Spector.

Let's hope any record company will let him work again, his way, so that we can enjoy some new music produced by The Man again !!

Still the one
I have just re-read the definitive Spector book "Collecting Phil Spector, the man, the legend the music" first issued in 1991. The book format, graphics, it's observations and analysis hold up over the years and is surely the definitive critical overview of Spector-sound. It has proven to be a timeless treasure which entertains and invites the reader to return again and again.

Creatures of the Kingdom: Stories of Animals and Nature
Published in Audio Cassette by Random House (Audio) (1993)
Authors: James A. Michener and John Cullum
Amazon base price: $16.00
Used price: $1.50
Average review score:

A must for nature and animal lovers.
This was my first introduction to the works of James A Michener. If you are an impatient reader, you may have trouble with other Michener works. But if you like an attention to detail Michener is the man for you. Since reading "Stories," I have read many other Michener novels and he has become a favorite. Readers who dislike his books often complain about the length. These are the same people who might cut you off in traffic and are always in a hurry. If you think getting there is half the fun, however, you will love a Michener novel. "Stories" is a book for everyone, however. It does not have the usual length of a full Michener novel and the subject matter shifts just enough to keep your attention. If you are impatient and still want to be well versed on your great authors, this is a great Michner book to read since you get an idea of his style and you also get exerpts from several of his books. If you like animals and nature, there is even more reason to love this book.

Puts you in the mind and eyes of the animals
I'm a high school senior and I don't read much, but I enjoyed this book. My teacher thinks James Michener is the greatest, so he had me read this to make up a biology credit. It was really interesting and made me think about animals in new ways and from their perspective. I recommend this book to anybody.
