Authors: John James Audubon and Tim Parmentor
Amazon base price: $39.95
Used price: $75.00

Great Book, a few flaws
Good sharp, clear rendering of Audubon's 435 Birds. The images appear to be photo offsets of the original Havell prints, including small flaws like spots and tears. No page or image numbers. You have to pencil in your own by using the excellent table of contents at the back of the book. Solid, high quality binding. Excellent addition to any birdwatcher's library.

Reads like a well written movie!
Normally I don't have patience to read novels. I ordered Bitter Root Blood because the cover looked interesting but as soon as I read the first page...I was hooked! This book reads like a well written movie...the characters and surroundings come alive and surround you...this is probably one of the most creative works I've ever read.

Readable bio of an unusual general.
"Black Jack" Logan was perhaps the best of the "political" generals of the Union army.
His military service, from Forts Henry and Donelson, through Vicksburg and Atlanta and on to the Carolinas, demonstrated not only his own abilities and personal courage, but also was emblematic of the skilll and sacrifice of his "Egyptians" of southern Illinois generally. His political thought, too, illustrative of the times, reflected the shift in Illinois opinion from initial confusion and wavering, to near-solid support for Lincoln and his war policies.
In conjunction with this very readable biography, the reader might be also be interested in "Reminiscences of a Soldier's Wife", Mrs. Logan's memoirs, which cannot be regarded as entirely reliable but which are a valuable adjunct to Jones' biography and give a colorful insight into the times.

A wonderfully poetic reading
Would it be blasphemous to quote an old adage that if God would speak it would sound like John Gielgud? Never mind if you consider the text as absolute historical truth, beautiful metaphor, or something between the two. It would be very difficult to find a better reader than Sir John. His voice shows every sign of age and that makes it sound just right. Also his carefully cadenced reading brings out all the poetry inherent in the King James translation of this material. An absolute Stunner! And an object lesson in dramatic reading for our current crop of microphone-influenced whisperers and mumblers.

Trajectory of Captain James Cook
This book caught my eye at Pearl Harbor on my first significant visit to Hawaii a few weeks ago. Had to order it as soon as I got home. Outstanding digest of Cook's lifetime of exploration. Excellent format with its mixture of concise narrative and outstanding maps. Fascinating "read", I couldn't put it down. Excellent level of detail -- enough to be truly educational -- not so much as to overload. Emotionally moving to recall standing on Hawaiian soil and try to imagine the worlds meeting in the explorations of Cook's time. This book helped stitch my own experience to the history of the explorations.

A Jigsaw Jones Mystery, The Case of the Secret Valentine
This was one of the first Jigsaw Jones books I read to my children. It hooked us and I've now read the eight in the series so far.The books are short enough to keep the kids interested.James Preller has the nack of putting the right ingredients in the books to make my children laugh, things that happen in every 4 to 8 year olds life. We've practiced the different secret codes that Jigsaw and his best friend Mila come up with. Also we learned abit about Abraham Lincoln even though we are Canadians living in England. The Jigsaw Jones books are well travelled and luckily I can get them through Amazon in the U.K., So I guess this is really a review of the series and not necessarily one book. They are nice reading before bed and my children are always ready to listen to the Jigsaw Jones books. Interesting and accessible
A good range of essays about Richardson's key films. Most of the essays are easily read (not overly academic)--the work with TOM JONES is especially solid. Recommended as an overview of a talented man's career

a plea from the editor
I, Herb Galewitz, edited this book for Dover Publications. Why do you have it listed as edited by Anna Samuel. Who she? My name is on the book cover.
