Powers 1998 Mid Atlantic States Golf Guide

Comprehensive guide to Mid-Atlantic Golf Courses.
I have found this book to be an invaluable source for finding courses in the Mid-Atlantic area. Course descriptions are concise and honest. Travel directions are excellent. Book contains money saving coupons which more than make up for the cost of the book. I anxiously await the 1999 version, as my 1998 is falling apart from frequent use.

The Rocky Mountain Journals of William Marshall Anderson: The West in 1834

Significant of the fur trade era
Anderson's journal, diary and narrative are an insightful look into his personal experiences, observations and thoughts during the fur trade year of 1834. Describing the multitude of people, places and events along the soon to be Oregon Trail , I can see why many historians reference his book for this time period. In typical Dale Morgan fashion, the editing is extremely well done, meticulously picking his way mile by mile with Anderson. Also included is the "Galaxy of Mountain Men" which are short but pertinent biographies of forty five men who influenced and helped shape the fur trade and western expansion movement.

Great book!
I've lived in Denver for 5 years and still learnt a lot from this book. Great info for Front-Range dwellers. I've also used it for trips over to Utah and Yellowstone. I've used Rough Guides since 1989 for trips through Europe and the Middle East. They are the best and I was very happy to find that they'd produced a guide to my own back yard. Enjoy!

Story of the Ingalls (Laura Ingalls Wilder Family Series)

Excellent supplemental reading for LIW fans
Although this book (really more like a booklet) isn't very long, it provides excellent details about the Ingalls family. Particularly interesting were the details on Carries life. While Laura was remarkable, in ways I think Carrie was even more so. She was a printer by trade and traveled the State of South Dakota working on different papers owned by a Mr. Senn. She also held down a homestead before finally marrying a mine owner who lived at the foot of Mount Rushmore.

It also contains some pictures of family members that I have never seen before (esp. of Charles and Carolines parents.) I highly recommend this book to Laura Ingalls Wilders fans and it is such an easy read that children will enjoy it.The only disappointing thing about the book is that it is so short.

Taming Mighty Alaska
I read this when it first came out and absolutely loved it! A trip with the Andersons is like a visit with old friends. This book is a must for anyone traveling to Alaska by car or RV and a delightful addition to any armchair traveler's collection. Descriptions of scenery are vivid but the interactions with the people the Andersons meet are lively. Perhaps the dialogue, which covers everything from purchases from clerks to other camper's tales of glory and woe, is the most appealing feature of the book. Parts of it make me laugh so hard I have to put the book down for a bit. I reread this book a couple of times a year. If you enjoy this you may also want to read Bill Bryson's "A Walk in the Woods" and "The Lost Continent"; Emily Kimbrough and Cornelia Otis Skinner's "Our Hearts Were Young and Gay" and another older book of William C. Anderson's called "Home Sweet Home Has Wheels, or Please Don't Tailgate the Real Estate."

A Fine Book About a Fine Unit
There were four Regular Army regiments recruited after the Civil War from the veterans of the US Colored Troops raised for war service. Two were infantry, the Twenty-fourth and Twenty-fifth, and two Cavalry, the Ninth and Tenth. The Tenth Cavalry was mostly stationed in the west to keep order among the Native Americans who called them Buffalo Soldiers. There has been a continuing great interest in the deeds and motivations of these men in the face of rampant prejudice and social seperation. The Tenth's service has been perpetuated in the present order of battle of the US Army and there still is an active 10th Cavalry though it is now integrated.
This 1899 book was long out of print and the original is now a collectible. This facsimile reprint edition, with a new introduction added, should interest all those who study the War with Spain. In addition to a few introductory chapters on Negro's service from the Revolution to the Civil War, and a chapter each on the other three Black regiments, the book gives most coverage to the Tenth in Cuba. The 9th and 10th flanked the famous 1st Volunteer Cavalry, the "Rough Riders" at San Juan.
The original also has a commendatory introduction by the Cavalry Division commanding officer "Fighting Joe" Wheeler, who had been a Confederate officer in the Civil War. Most of the book is a collection of personal narratives interspersed with interviews with other commanders.
As an aside, Lt. John J. Pershing, later commander of the Punitive Expedition in 1916 and then the AEF in France, got his nickname "Black Jack" from his service with the Tenth.

Can't wait to get more copies
After reading Mrs. Flick's first book OVER YONDER HILL, I couldn't wait to read her second one, UPON THIS ROCK. It is a very romantic book about the American Revolutionary War, and it's been said there just aren't enough romantic books written about that war. Mrs. Flick has written one of the most romantic, suspenseful, can't-put-it-down books about the American Revolution anyone could find. I'm so anticipating a sequel to this historical book which would take William and Mary further into their lives in America. This surely is a book to be enjoyed by historians, men and women, and by everyone in the family.
