Right Stuff for New Hang Glider Pilots

Humorous Classic, good as a suppliment
A hilarious introduction to the Hang Gliding scene. This book does not replace a training manual, such as the excellent one written by Dennis Pagen. It is a great source of advice for novice pilots who are just coming off the training hill. Most of the advice is serious and much of it cannot be found elsewhere. A lot of what he says is incidental to actually flying, such as how to treat people who shuttle your vehicle. There is some overlap between Fair's book and a beginner training manual, but his audience is for pilots who already (barely) know how to fly, and this perspective allows him to skip much of the basic how-to stuff while concentrating on how to apply it to real-world conditions.

Such as: how to launch in windy and gusty conditions, how to set up a landing on a small field, different types of turns, how to transition from a single-surface to a double-surface glider, etc. The tone of the book is like having a hip older brother or seasoned pilot take you under his wing and give friendly advice. The book has some of the author's own illustrations, which are effective if somewhat home-made.

There are some hilarious chapters dealing with snappy answers to stupid questions such as "how do you breathe up there?", "what happens if you hit an air pocket?", and my all-time favorite "what do you do whjen your arms get tired?".

The book is fun, cheap, and useful. If you aren't looking for a stand-alone Pilot's Bible, GO FOR IT.

(one of the author's comments is never to elicit advice from someone named "Crash" who uses terms like "Far Out", "That's Cool", and "Go For It".)

Although I respect Hagee, I didn't like the book
I love reading books on biblical prophecy, and respect Hagee as a pastor and writer, however this book seemed to be nothing more than a self loathing book... at least for the first part of it. We should all be horrified at the attrocities the jews have had to face throughout history and understand that they have a central role in biblical prophecy, and I consider myself a very pro-Israel person, but I don't think God wants us to treat Israel as a nation that can do no wrong no matter what they do.

What got me the most is how Hagee stresses in the book that the leading Pharisees and teachers of the law during Jesus' day in no way represents all jews (I agree), but then talks as if all christians have blood on their hands from christian persecution of the jews in past centuries (I disagree). If the Jewish leaders of the first century don't represent the jews today, then centuries old christians don't represent christians today. No one is gonna tell me that I am guilty because of what people who called themselves christians did in the past.

The second part of the book had some interesting points of prophecy, so I gave it two stars, but the first part ruined it.

A strong advocate of the Jewish roots of Christian Faith
Dr. Hagee's biblical research and perception of GOD's Covenant people, the Jews are definitely the speaking Mind of our GOD Almighty and the Holy One of Israel. Those who think likewise are those who have a faithful heart to our Jewish Saviour, our One and Only Lord Jesus Christ.
Though anti-Semitism started with the early church fathers but it is Hitler who is the one that bring anti-Semitism to the utmost brink. Hitler is a catholic and that's undeniable and the
roman catholic did help him to accomplish the Holocaust project. So it is very right and very appropriate that Dr. Hagee bring these up to the readers and I don't think he's being anti-catholic but just revealing true facts to the world and especially to the catholic world. Catholics may find it
disturbing but face the facts and if it bother you, don't read but don't belittle Dr. Hagee's divine works.
Lord Jesus definitely don't like a Christian who don't face up to his/her mistakes when committed and keep telling Him I have not sin. I highly recommend this book to all Christians and non-Christians who have a heart for our gracious Lord Jesus Christ and His Holy Land Israel and Jerusalem as well as His beloved Covenant people, the Jews.

A clear winner once again from one of my favorite authors!
Pastor Hagee has done it again! This book doesn't include his opinions; his words are from the Word of God. The book clearly reveals that Israel is the absolute center time piece to Bible prophecy. It uncovers many of the myths about Jews that Christians have believed for so long. The book distinguishes between Israel and the Church. Neither replaces the other as many are falsely teaching. I may receive criticism for this but I'm not here to be applauded by people. This book clearly reveals that the Church does not go through the tribulation. I agree with the Pre-Trib position because the tribulation is a time when God deals with Israel again, not the church. God picks up with Israel again where He left off before the Church was born when Christ was cut off (crucified) but not for Himself. Once the church is raptured, God will deal with Israel again so the Jewish people will finally recognize their Messiah. This book is a must read if you're wanting to know the truth. Don't pass this one up!

Ship of fools.
The first half of this book is an enjoyable read, even if like me, you feel that the Smeeton's goal to round Cape Horn in a yacht is foolhardy. And sure enough, the Southern Ocean serves up the house specialty for them right on cue, pitchpoles their boat, and they narrowly escape with their lives.

By the time I got to the second half of the story, I was disgusted with their pointless and quixotic drive to try to round the Horn again after they had spent half a year in S. Chile begging, borrowing, and stealing parts and labor to rebuild their nearly-demolished yacht. At this point I could not enjoy any more of Mile's detailed descriptions of their jury rig or navigational efforts.

The Smeetons deluded themselves into believing that they were some sort of noble adventurers, striking out where less daring people feared to tread. The truth was that they were fools; their experience and knowledge provided them with ample reasons why people should not attempt the Horn in a small boat. But they just did it anyway. A lot of their folly was driven by this pride. Miles even admits that they did it BECAUSE they feared doing it. To his credit, at one point he confesses that they were not thinking rationally when they decided to make the second go at it (which ended disastroulsy, same as the first).

Years later the CCA awarded the Smeetons the Bluewater Medal, but it wasn't in recognition of this particular voyage, but rather for their lifelong accomplishment of cruising nearly the entire globe in Tsu Hang. On the voyage detailed in Once is Enough, their culpability in repeatedly putting themselves in such unnecessary risk was anything but seamanlike.

Seamanship
Once Is Enough is more than enough, especially south of Cape Horn.

Perserverance and seamanship at its best!

Allows you a third chance at a successful attempt.
