A Great book for any American boy coming of age
This book takes place during the outset of the American Revolution. The main character is a young boy in his mid to late teens who is caught up in the spirit of the Revoultion and wants to join the rebels but his father, who is a simple farmer just getting by, does not want his son involved. Of course the son disobeys his father and joins Ethan Allen's group of rebels in time to be in on the capture of Fort Ticondiroga by the rebels. Benedict Arnold appears for a while and the author uses this to show how he was a hero before he turned traitor. The young boy aged by the reality of the conflict starts to see his father's point of view. This book is a remarkable and accurate portrait of an average life in America at the outbreak of one of the most important wars in all human history. The author educates the reader on the history while entertaining. The values and painful lessons learned by the main character are so well presented that it is impossible for any young boy not to have his own character shaped by the book, and for the better. An excellent book entertains educates and serves as a guide for any boy coming of age in America. This book will make you patriotic even if you were not before. I read this book in the library when I was about 12-14 and I remember it vividly, which is a credit to how good a book this is. Now in my early thirties, after reading many other books, this one stands out in my mind as sharply as Huck Finn. Get this if you can find it. I was saddened to see that it was out of print.

An Awesome Read for a young American Boy
This book is wonderful and sadly out of print. It takes place in the midst of the early days of th Revolutionary War. It is about a farmer's son who is swept up in the cause of the rebels and his father's desire to keep him out of the conflict. Of course the son joins the Freedom fighters and he joins the group of rebels under the leadership of Ethan Allen. Benedict Arnold also makes an appearance before he becomes a traitor. The climax of the novel revolves around the capture of Fort Ticondiroga by the rebels. If you find this book, buy it. It is an excellent book for an early teen boy who is coming of age and learning what it means to be a man. The main character experiences war first hand and he starts to see his father's reasoning and the very real and very painful part of war that makes it not so glorious, but ultimately necessary at times. This novel is full of little details about life of the common folk at the outbreak of the War for Independence. It is as educational in terms of history as it is entertaining. And for any young American boy coming of age the book is as formative of good character and virtue as any novel can be. I read when I was around 12-14 sometime around then and I loved it. An excellent book in every aspect, very engrossing and hard to put down. I'm now in my early thirties and I still remember the story of this book although I cannot remember the names. The fact that I remember so much this book is a credit to the author. I read a lot of books, this one made a very deep impression. Too bad its out of print.

A Really Good Sequel
I recently read By Blood Possessed and enjoyed it immensely. The novel reminded me of the best of the Barbara Michaels novels, suspense with a little of the supernatural thrown in. Her second book is just as good. The story of Pat, Miss Maggie and Bell Run continues, when another ghost makes his presence known to Pat. Shortly thereafter, a skull is found in Pat's proposed tomato patch. The anthropology department of the local university is called, and a team is sent up to Bell Run. A contemporary death seems to connect the two eras, and Pat and Miss Maggie try to find two murderers in two different centuries.

A mystery with a fantastic twist
One day Pat Montella, the ghost detective, will inherit Miss Maggie's Bell Run, Virginia estate as the last known descendent of the Bell family. Pat begins to "dream of a young Black male living in the mid 1870s. Apparently he was named Emancipation in homage to Lincoln's freedom speech at Gettysburg a week before he was born.

At about the same time, an unknown gravesite is found. Considering the history of the estate where many Civil War skirmishes occurred that would not be a shocking scenario. However, not long afterward, the police believe that a friend's assistant committed murder. Somehow the three events: the vision from the past, the newly found gravesite, and the murder are linked with Pat's abilities to see ghosts as the only chance of finding out the truth.

The second Montella paranormal mystery retains the freshness and uniqueness within a strong amateur sleuth story line that highlights the debut tale (see BY BLOOD POSSESSED). The plot is fun and never loses steam as Pat struggles with her century plus old visions and trying to find the connection to present events. The characters (mortal and spiritual) add depth that propel the story line forward in such a way that paranormal mystery readers will appreciate. After HANG MY HEAD AND CRY Elena Santangelo can hold her head up high with pride.

Mary Makes my Day Bright
Great pictures! Soothing to the soul. However, I would like to see some African American characters, this would open up her selling market.

So pretty!
I love all of her designs, but she's really outdone herself here. The best part... it's narrow enough to hang inside a regular sized kitchen cabinet door. Although it's so pretty you may not want to hide it.

Wonderful interactive book!
I purchased both of Crossley's Hide-and-Seek books for my son when he was 6 months old, and he has always loved them! They're wonderful interactive books, and in this one, a frisky puppy "pops up" and plays with a bunny and a cat. My son loves to anticipate each page, even though by now he knows exactly what to expect. He loves to point out everything in each picture, down to the tiniest bees on the flowers! Very simply written and colorfully illustrated, I only wish that Mr. Crossley would give us more of these! I must add that this book has somehow managed to survive my son's every attempt to destroy it. It's a very sturdy board book, and the elastic that holds the puppy is extremely strong, but I'd *still* recommend putting this book away after the reading session is over.

my son's favorite book!
Hide and Seek Puppy is my 15 month old's favorite book! We read it often, and everytime I pull the string down to hide the puppy, he squeals with excitement time after time. This book is wonderful for toddlers because it is heavy cardboard and can withstand hours of "toddler reading". Hide and Seek Puppy is a very sweet book with cute illustrations of a bunny and a cat, and of course puppy! This will soon be a classic in our family. I recommend it for any toddler who loves to be read to.

"Zack Files" meets "X-Files"
"Hang a Left at Venus," by Dan Greenburg, is #15 in the "Zack Files" series of short novels for young readers. In this installment, New York City schoolboy Zack and his dad encounter an extraterrestrial visitor while walking in Central Park. Zack and dad have a series of comic misadventures as they attempt to help the friendly ET. The book spoofs the popular paranormal TV drama "The X-Files" in the form of two characters who are parodies of characters from that series.

This is one of my favorite in the excellent "Zack" series. The extraterrestrial visitor is a particularly well-realized character, and the humor in the book is a lot of fun.
