Love Afair with this Book
I love this book.. It is one of the few in my collection that I make sure I get back when I lend it.

Mr. Hall's love of fly fishing is evident in every page. It is easy to read and very down to earth. It is written with feeling and warmth and makes you want to drop everything and go to Scotland. It even makes me consider fishing in the winter, and I HATE COLD.

This book is one of the few I have found that conveys a fly fisherman's love for the sport and his surroundings so well. Mr. Hall is engaging and down-to-earth, not snotty, elitist, or condecending (which is hard to find in the sport of fly fishing today).

I have read it at least six times and keep it handy for the next. It is never far from my reach or mind.

God and Human Suffering
Of all the treatments of this difficult subject of God's presence in suffering, Douglas John Hall's is the most helpful that I've read. This is a serious theological treatment of a complicated and emotional issue. Hall brings biblical theological clarity to readers while also addressing other popular treatments to the subject. Unless we understand the theology of the cross and God's self-limitation in love as he relates to humanity, we will end up frustrated and ultimately lacking in our understanding. I highly recommend this book to all who want to seriously grapple with the question of suffering.

How to Handle Trouble (G.K. Hall Large Print Inspirational Collection)
Published in Hardcover by G K Hall & Co (1994)
Author: John Carmody
Amazon base price: $20.95
Used price: $5.39
Average review score:

An excellent resource for all kinds of trouble
I have found Carmody's "How to Handle Trouble" to be the one of the most truly useful books I have ever read (and reread) about meeting real hardships in life. Realistic, hopeful, and wise, Carmody's writing addresses issues as practical as the need for help from friends and as profound as the need to address the deeper mysteries of life, death and meaning. All is written in a very accessible way, and organized so that particular themes and topics can be easily identified when you want to go back to revisit them. Down to earth, yet never forgetting the horizon of mystery that surrounds human life. A good book to hold onto, and to read and reflect on, time and again.

John D. Nesbitt is one amazing writer! His protagonist Owen Felver is an honest man, kind and thoughtful. The story unfolds with grace and ease. I haven't read to many books like this, where I would forget I was reading at times. Very vivid, with a clarity that is hard to believe. If you only read one western this year, this is it. Outstanding!

A Staple and a Standard
This book is an absolute standard within the circles of the study of Early Christianity, Judaism, Roman Law and Relgion; or all of the above.

The artifacts excavated from the ruins of the Masada yield fascinating insights into the world of the New Testament and the times when King Herod, Pilate, Jesus, Peter, and Paul lived. This book invites you to visit Herod's palaces, walk the robber-infested road taken by the good Samaritan, and see lamps that may have been like those carried by the ten virgins and sandals that made footprints on the shores of Galilee or the deserts of Judea.

Every item from Masada suggests something about the setting in which Christianity arose. These essays better help us understand the people, politics, and material culture of the world of the New Testament.

Max Miller. Great comic.
One of the few books about Miller, suprisingly, considering the regard that he is still held in by other comedians. This may be due to the fact that his stage act bore little resemblance to the man himself and he didn't give much away about himself while he was alive. This book looks quite closely at the man himself, with all the usual tales of his legendary meaness. A very tough childhood in Brighton, the grimness of street theatre, where he started, and ultimately onto well deserved stardom. Miller was the highest paid performer in the 1930's. For his day he was tremendously rude. Today there is little left of the magic that Miller brought to the variety halls. Vocal Recordings can't do justice to his type of comedy. If you are interested in Max Miller this book is a must.

My Brother's Letters Home: Blutiger Eimer (28th) Division Field Artillery Officer's Letters Home

A Soldier's Life
These letters are a rare glimpse into a soldier's thoughts during WWII. Pieces of history, many forgotten are brought to light. Experience a pass to Paris, how wonderful after months living in the field in the cold and mud. A simple watch was one of the few items this man requested from home. That his letters, often written from the battle field were delivered home and responses returned is a wonder of army mail service. The photos of home and family and notes from the author, the letter writer's brother enrich the book and add perspective. Highly valuable as a teaching tool for students. The book is short and hard to put down until you've gone cover to cover.
