Great Value to Military Students of the period.
John Hall has written perhaps the most complete record of casualties of British and Allied Officers caused by actions in the Iberian Peninsula during the "period". His sources are impeccably presented and must be of great value to military students of the war in that theatre. Being given permission to attach this work to the definitive overall history by Charles Oman is sufficient acceptance in itself to guarantee its place on the shelves of the most august military libraries, however, it must be said that a similar work coming from the "enemy" of the time, "Listes des officers tues et blesses pendant les Guerres de l'Empire" by M Martinien, was in continuous use by Sir Charles throughout his own mammoth compilation, and , although often remarked upon by that author as being "invaluable" was never elevated beyond that rather minor appellation. That criticism apart this work has such a wealth of hitherto "hard to find" information, so easily made accessible, that it would be churlish to deny the author his laurels. The collective history of the war in the Peninsula then has just made a modest leap foward through this publication.

There really is hope...
In this almost hopeful discussion of American societal development, Hall and Lindholm draw upon writers such as Durkheim, Baumgartner, and Garnier to show that America is acutally fortified by its diversity. There are plentiful explorations of race and ethnic issues in contemporary society, providing for a wondefully woven portrait of the American cultural landscape. Hall and Lindholm write in a hopeful and easy to read style, yet their discussion lacks statistical depth for such an important issue. A quality text through and through.

A COMPLETE OPENING FOR WHITE
This book is excellent for Club Players with a rating below 2200. The strength of the book is its combinative mixture of grand master games along with high level club matches by the authors. The inclusion of many of the authors games allow for a step by step in depth understanding of certain variations. In addition it is especially useful for those club players who tend to favour attacking through h4 on their ninth or tenth moves. The reason for not giving a five star rating is due to a lack of examples where the attack is conducted through f4 rather than h4.

Enjoyable, Diverse Collection
Here is a group of stories with enough diversity to please anyone's taste. The authors have, through fiction, presented the people of the West, their customs, dreams, triumphs, and defeats, and done it in a way to keep the reader going. The infusion of humor brings a welcome chuckle to the at times discouraging and hard life described in the writings. In short, these stories bring reality into the myth of the Old West.

Solid Background Book on Political Parties and Elections
Bibby has written a solid book on political parties, their function in current elections and how their role has changed over time.

Political parties used to be much more of a central focus in American elections. Ususlly, political registration was a sure indicator for election outcomes and the blessing of the local party a prerequisite for a shot at political office. Not anymore. Reforms and changes in the 1970s eviscerated political parties as dominant actors in the process. They are still a force to be reckoned with, but in many locals less important than personal political organizations that have sprung up around candidate focused electoral machines.

Bibby looks at this transformation as a chronicler and explains the changes as well as current practices. A student of political parties and their role will find this book useful.

I'm teaching a course in elective politics at the University of Pennsylvania's Fels Center of Government. This is a book I considered assigning for required reading for the course and is used by some other teachers in the field at colleges and universities around the country. I chose not to list the book because my course is focused on the art and practices of actually getting elected, which Bibby's book is not.

That's not to say this book doesn't have it's place. It's just not meant to be a guide to getting elected or to working within your own local political party. For an academic look at the subject, it will do the job.

As a college Accounting student I found this book extremely useful in explaining the US tax laws in a way I could easily understand. Many "real-life" examples make the reading meaningful.

An Eyewitness View of the Creation of West Virginia
This book presents an eyewitness view of the events leading directly to the creation of West Virginia as a separate state. The primary author, Granville Hall, was present at most of the events described in the book, in his capacity as a reporter for a Wheeling newspaper. The book was written from the notes that he took at the conventions called in the early 1860's, first in Richmond, then in Wheeling. The Richmond convention described is the one where the delegates voted to secede from the Union. The Wheeling conventions were first called as the 'true' government of Virginia, then went on to create West Virginia and write the state constitution. Recommended highly to anyone who is interested in this period of West Virginia's history.
