An original political thriller
This book, a political thriller has an original plot and is interesting enough to keep the reader riveted as never slackens its pace. Had the author added more twist and turns throughout all the story, it would have been more attractive and enjoyable and had also the author recreated more action packed suspense i.e.(the FBI tracking down Shea- the Pizzaiola shop episode) it would have been a hell of a -blockbuster--could-not -put- it- down. From my experience as a reader, in this book all the situations involved are solved in a short time and then the story goes back on. Overall, this novel has some twist and turns at the beginning, the run in a straight line and repeats the same scheme at the end with a lot of surprises. It is a fairly entertaining book and I would recommend it.

Great story, but I missed Dismas Hardy.
Compelling story of how justice can be manipulated by people in high places. Excellent character study of Abe Glitsky who has appeared in other John Lescroart books. I wish John had not revealed the outcome of his new book GUILT in relation to Wes Farrell's background in this book. Looks like he wrote the books in reverse order.

A great story with a greater message.
This book may be the best of this author's. I'm sorry I didn't read it earlier. Although the familiar Dismas Hardy is not the central figure of this book - you will recognize other central characters from other Lescroart work. I found this book to be very thought-provoking, fair, and unbiased in presenting the reader with a story that could happen in any city (and probably does happen to some extent more often than we wish to think). The reader cannot ignore the depth of fears, prejudices, attitudes, and personal agendas than hinder the progress of race relations in our country. You'll not be able to put the book down until you've read the last word.

A good, affordable dictionary
This is simply the best Anglo-Saxon dictionary you can find for anything resembling a reasonable price. It helps to know a little bit about the language (for example, the "ge-" prefix is used much the same way that it is in German). The only serious problem I found is Hall's using the "eth" character for cases where "thorn" is used in the original texts--a serious scholarly failure, though one that the serious student should be able to overlook with relative ease. I do feel that this dictionary could use quite a bit of revision--anyone up to the task?--but at the same time, it's the best you can find for the price, and certainly worth the money.

I won't give it 5 stars because...
... this is more a lexicon than a dictionary. But it is the only affordable and valuable one on the market, behind the great (but very expensive) Bosworth and Toller's Anglo-Saxon Dict. Thus, sometimes you might not find the word you're looking for. So be smarter than the lexicon: search another word derived from the same root, suppress the prefixes, change the cases, think of the infinitive of the verbs, and you may finally obtain your translation of the word.
But let us be honest: this book is great, and affordable for most of us.
A classic ?

intended for teaching use, but a great help to writers
A wonderful source for Anglo-Saxon words and their meanings, which is very reasonably priced. Intended as a teaching aid, I have found it very helpful to the writer of period history and fiction.

Public Enemies: The Host of America's Most Wanted Targets the Nation's Most Notorious Criminals (G K Hall Large Print Nonfiction Series)
Published in Hardcover by Thorndike Pr (Largeprint) (2001)
Authors: John Walsh and Philip Lerman
Amazon base price: $30.95

Another great read
John Walsh is great at fighting crime and has found a new voice in writing about the criminals he helps take off the streets. Pulblic Enemies grabs you at the begining and holds on tight. Every story is chilling and you are glad that John Walsh is out there watching over us like a big brother. The story of the Yosemite murders was particularly chilling. It thoroughly explains how the women where in a very dark and secluded section of the Motel. It actually gave me the creeps. Mr. Walsh does not exploit the victims or their families, he just tells the story like it is and leaves the reader with a real empathy for the people involved.

Bad Guys Watch Out ! You Never Know Where AMW's Fans Are!
I have always been an admirer of John Walsh and this book reinforces that belief. The way he refocused his grief and anger after the murder of his son into a crusade for justice for victims of crime and their family is a testament to the his sincerity. I enjoyed reading about the behind the scene stories involving the cases profiled. Especially the funny stories during his ride along with police officers for an episode of COPS.

The book reinforces the importance of keeping your eyes open and reporting any suspicious activities. The police can't be everywhere. They need the eyes and ears of the general public. Time and time again have proven that it's viewer tips which have helped police catch these scumbags. Imagine what would have happened if someone in that apartment building had reported the suspicious odor coming from Ira Eichorn's apartment right away? Holly Maddux's family would not still be waiting for justice. He would not have had over 15 years of freedom in Europe. I did not know that my senator, Arlen Specter was his lawyer. I wonder what he says now about his famous client - his arguements for bail was ludicrous. The judge was insane to grant such a low bail but he had friends in high places and money & fame talks.I don't regularly watch AMW but I think I will now.

Walsh does it again
John Walsh is one of my heroes. This book, as his others, is another excellent in-depth look at Walsh's recent cases on America's Most Wanted. This book starts with a bang and keeps up the pace. I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to protect themselves and their families from the becoming victims. These cases will open your eyes.

Heaven and Hell (G.K. Hall Large Print Book Series)
Published in Paperback by G K Hall & Co (1988)
Author: John Jakes
Amazon base price: $15.95
Used price: $2.07
Average review score:

Good ending
While the novel makes a point to keep up with most of the characters we've come to know, Stanley, Virgilla, George & Constance, Cooper and Judith, and Ashton, the novel focuses mainly on Charles and his new life out West.

The post-war transition of Charles's character by Jakes was done masterfully. The transition of Cooper Main was a little unbelievable given his past.

The long conclusion nicely wrapped up the entire series. Definitely not the best book of the series, but a great story of life after the Civil War.

North and South The Triology
If you enjoy books that cover the Civil War era, don't miss this exciting Triology. It follows the lives of two families from two different parts of the country. Follow the hardships, heartbreaks, love, and joy of the Mains from South Carolina and the Hazzards from Pennsylvania.
It is a tail of true friends and what tries to tear them apart. It will make you laugh and cry. It gives a clear view of what some of our ancestors probably faced during the war that devided our great nation.

The End of a Story
Heaven and Hell, the last book in the North and South trilogy was absolutely wonderful. This book is mainly about Charles and his life in the West. And also his trying to find a place in the world after the war. Madeline is also a major character in this book with her journal entries to Orry. And the evil Bent has to make his appearance throughout. (I could have done without Bent!!) The lives of Stanley, Virgilia, Billie, Brett, and the love-to-hate-her Aston aren't covered as much in this book. I would have loved to learn more about Billie and Brett. Also would have liked to read more about Marie-Louise and her Yankee husband Theo. I found the parts of the book about them to be very touching.

If you've already read the other two books you must read this one to find out what happens. You will be in for quite a few surprises. This book is definitely worth reading. A classic!!!

Heaven in High Gear (G K Hall Large Print Inspirational Series)

There's a Message here
Heaven in High Gear is a sequel to the first God on a Harley. The story revolves around a stripper named Heather Hurley who lives high in LA in her condo and drives a BMW. She works out with a personal trainer to keep her body in top form and she judges all men she sees according to their physical form. Joe, God, arrives in her life when she visits her childhood home for a vacation with old friends. Heather is guided and instructed by Joe how she can have a better life, be happy and do what she really loves to do most, which is to write poetry and sing torch songs. In the end Heather learns to love herself and have the confidence and self-esteem to have what she wants, with Joe's help of course.

These books (God on a Harley and Heaven in High Gear) are not heavy duty reading but there's a message given that applies to all human's who need to have faith in themselves. The message that He does hear and He does help. I think the book is a worthwhile read. It's inspiring and hopeful.

Sequel to "God on a Harley" and another "Must Read" book.
This book picks up where "God on a Harley" ends but yet it can be read and bring much joy and self-enlightenment even if the reader hasn't read the first book by Brady. In the book, God, as a biker, reveals himself to the main character and gives her the direction to find and love herself. God, aka "Joe" gives to her her own personal commandments. Very inspiring and uplifting. In the end, God must continue on to his next person for their own one-on-one meeting except this time, it's a....... Can't ruin it for you. If I could personally ever meet Ms. Brady, I would first thank her for helping me so much through her books and then BEG for the next sequel to "Heaven in High Gear".

Absolutely Heart Warming!!!
This book was incredible. I enjoyed reading it as much as I enjoyed her other book "God on a Harley". I could relate to it in so many ways even though it wasn't based on anyones life. I really hope that she keeps the books coming. This is a definate must read book!!

It was OK but not one of her best
I thought there were too many characters and the story rambled on over the same ground. In addition, this story had too little emphasis on high finance which is always my favourite area. I felt after I read it that this story could have been about widgets and it would have made no real difference.

Very enjoyable but not up to her best
I have read all Emma Lathen's books and have just finished this one. It is fun, but I missed some of her usual characters - Tom Robichaux, Everett Gabler and Walter Bowman in particular. However, the plot was tight and altogether a good read

If you like solidity
I have a well thumbed copy of this book. It has been the foundation of my repertoire for a number of years. I am no pro, just a better than average club hack. The strength of this opening system is that it is solid from both sides of the board. One is not likely to fall apart by move 10. On the other hand it is not an exhaustive system. There is not much against the Dutch. There is not a plan against early Benoni systems. As black the Queen's Gambit Tartakower system is great. The Caro-Kann requires considerable theoretical knowledge. Against prepared opponents one has to be on toes against the Panov-Bottvinik attack, the multiple advance systems, and the grind of the main line Petrosian Smyslov system. I have argued with Smith and Hall, but I keep coming back. I have won many games by playing solid until the other person self destructed. I reccomend it as a good foundation repertoire for average cautious players like me.

A good effort, but not comprehensive enough.
Well written. Emphasizes piece play over complex variations, and contains many forcing variations to keep you in familiar teritory(and your opponents out of comfortable book lines). The one weakeness is that ,despite the book's cliams, the variations for white are not a complete system and must be suplemented by other sources. As a weekend chess club warrior, I found the book to provide an excellent opening repetoire for black, and I enjoyed the large number of well annotated games which provide good insight into the typical middle and endgame possitions that arise from these openings. For a class D,C,or B player this book would be a good addition to your chess library.

Pocket Companion as a good review, esp. before you sleep!!
This pocket companion serves as a concise overview of the most important facts & concepts from the parent textbook (Guyton's Textbook of Medical Physiology). However, it does not contain all the details or some clinical relevances, that's why you have to go back to the parent textbok for furthur info.

Review of Pocket Guide for Guyton's Medical Physiology Text
Good figures. Text is easy to read. Guyton's text is especially good in explaining cardiovascular material. It complements the larger text well, and is recommended as a good, shorter version of the main text.

"step-by-step instructions...."
The back cover promises "Step-by-step instructions on how to use it in your systems." This is why I bought the book. However, there are only a handful of pages on "Using Twofish", and none of them have anything like a step-by-step howto.

fascinating to a limited audience
Bruce Schneier is the Yoda of crpytography and information security, if you've heard him there's no need to ask anyone else. This book would probably only appeal to the genuinely avid crypto fan, its Greek to anyone else. It is a thorough exposition of the making of the Twofish cypher, the latest attempt to secure information as absolutely as possible. You must be well versed in cryptography to get anything out of the work.

A important book to decipher
This book is not a how-to-do thing. You will learn why this cypher was created, how it was created it all the details. Not an introductory book. But very worth to who ever want to enter modern applied cryptographic field.
