James Joyce's Dublin

Joyce's Dublin Through the Eye of a Fellow Dubliner
Edward Quinn author and photographer captures the everyday life of the people in the same manner as James Joyce himself. Quinn uses a reporter style collecting in his images what Joyce called 'epiphanies'. Quinn roamed day until dusk not only caught notings of words and phrases, he caught the incidents of the way the Irish live and the atomsphere of the places as Joyce saw it. Selected writings from Joyce's works, 'Dubliners', 'Ulysses' 'A Portrait of the Artist As a Young Man' 'Finnegan's Wake' and the autobiography 'Stephen Hero' creates a spiritual manifestation of Quinn's photographs. The book also commerates the annual Bloomsday to celebrate Joyce's memory and his contribution to his Ireland he wrote about.

A brief history of the beginning of the English Bible.
I am a student of Dr. McGoldrick and reading this book was a requirement of his class. It was a rather enlightening book which gave a brief overall picture of the history of the Bible. It starts with pre-Tyndale times and factors in Robert Barnes and Martin Luther and then follows through with Myles Coverdale acquiring permission from King Henry VIII to publish a version of Tyndale's Bible. It is a matter-of-fact book which helps to view the struggles of those early translators of the Bible.

Tribute to the Dreamers
This book is a tribute to the dreamers who have imagined human flight to Mars, even when government bureaucracies lost interest. And even though this was written twenty years ago, the fact that so much of it is still valid -- and still unique -- shows how little we've advanced in that time.

The book was well received at the time. Here are some samples:

"A timely and valuable document" - Sir Bernard Lovell, Nature; "For the space buff, it is all here" -Science 83; "Those who exult in man's destiny in space, or delight in solving engineering problems, will find that Oberg's book provides ample fodder" -Kirkus Reviews; "A carefully reasoned, hardheaded look" - American Library Association BOOKLIST; "Well-presented arguments, supported by excellent research" -Astronomy; "A detailed and scientifically accurate scenario..., exciting and easy to read." - NASA's "Explorer's Guide to the Universe". "Oberg expounds this thesis with infectuous enthisiasm for the general reader." - ASTRONOMY AND ASTRONAUTICS. Featured on James A. Michener's "Space" TV mini-series, April 18, 1985, in the joint CBS & Library of Congress "Read More About It" spot, narrated by Michener at the end of the program; one of three books recommended.

The sections describing how busy the crew will be on the long voyage from Earth to Mars was particularly intriguing, since everyone always assumes they will be bored. And the discussions of options using the small moons of Mars, Deimos and Phobos, are also highly original.

Models for Investors in Real World Markets
When I looked at the cover of this book, I knew it was going to be contrarian. It shows volatility moving in the opposite direction to growth. Looking inside the book, I found the cover figure in Chapter 9 where it was described as volatility versus growth for 75 years of the Ibbotson Index starting in 1926. I looked at the Ibbotson table, and, indeed with the authors' eleven outlier years eliminated, the correlation is still negative (-.142). (With all 75 years included, I found the correlation to be (-.317).) At any rate, the Markowitzian notion of finding how large you can stand for volatility to be and then finding the portolio which maximizes growth is stood on its head.

The authors come up with an alternative to the Markowitz approach for portfolio selection based on something they call a simugram, which looks to be computer intensive.

Much of the book is spent on fundamental analysis, and indeed the authors do not seem favorably disposed to technical analysis. They dump on Black-Scholes and blame its use for the collapse of LTCM and Enron.

Some finance professionals will find much of this book annoying, since it attacks many standard concepts, such as the Efficient Market Hypothesis. And it seems to attack some of the basic tools in the finance tool kit, such as "risk neutral" evaluation.

One of the troubling things I found is that though the authors attack the canon of modern finance, they have only limited alternatives to recommend. They seem to recommend either doing deep fundamental analysis, using their complex simugram portfolio analysis, or putting one's money into an index fund. Most of us don't have the time to do the first or the software to do the second. To do the third really gives up on mathematical finance.

New Earths: Restructuring Earth and Other Planets

A Seminal 'Classic'
This is the first-ever non-fiction treatment of 'terraforming', altering other planets to make them habitable by Earth life. It draws heavily on science fiction and speculation.

The book is a classic, and was well received by reviewers at the time[...].

In later years other writers went beyond the book in technical details, but never in its breadth of creative vision. And it still has some really cute fictional vignettes of future terraforming activities to head each chapter.

A worthy addition to a space enthusiast's library.

The PERFECT Book
I think that this is the greatest book to have ever been written. I think that this book should be required reading in every classroom in the nation. In point of fact, I think that this book is quite possibly, the "perfect" book by any account of perfection.

Highly recommended!!

Sincerely, Kim Oglethorpe (linguistic pathologist extraordinaire)
