AN UNKNOWN JEWEL
WHEN I PURCHASED THIS BOOK, I BOUGHT IT MAINLY TO ADD TO MY COLLECTION OF ISAAC ASIMOV NOVELS AND ANTHOLOGIES. I WAS SURPRISED AND PLEASED TO FIND OUT THAT IT WAS ONE OF HIS BEST ANTHOLOGIES, AT LEAST IN MY MIND. THE STORIES SELECTED BY ASIMOV AND HIS TWO CO-EDITORS, MARTIN GREENBURGH AND CHARLES WAUGH, WERE RICH IN CHARACTERIZATION AND THE STORYLINES WERE SPELLBINDING, EVEN IF IT WAS HARD TO BELIEVE THAT MANY OF THESE SITUATIONS WOULD OR COULD EVER OCCUR, BUT SUCH IS FANTASY! ANOTHER REASON I , ALONG WITH THOSE I LENT THIS BOOK TO, ENJOYED IT WAS THE FACT THAT MANY OF THE AUTHORS WHOSE WORKS WERE SELECTED WERE OBSCURE; NO ONE I KNEW HAD HEARD OF THEM. BUT THE MAIN REASON WAS THE FACT THAT MOST, IF NOT ALL OF THE STORIES DID NOT END ON A DOWN NOTE. THEY ALWAYS CONTAINED SORT OF HOPE OF SURVIVAL. I READ THIS BOOK TO PIECES, AND WAS DISAPPOINTED WHEN I FOUND OUT IT WAS OUT OF PRINT, AND NOT LIKELY TO BE RE-ISSUED. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS BOOK, IF YOU CAN FIND A COPY. SURE HOPE I CAN!

A few things to think about
The stories in this book range from not likely to frighteningly real--the ways that humans are capable of destroying themselves are depicted in accurate detail. A must read (again)...if only I could find a copy!

Fantastic collection of stories
Last year I picked up a copy of "A Century of Horror" at my local Barnes & Noble store. It was so good I bought others in the series, including Century of Science Fiction and A Century of Fantasy. All are excellent. Silverberg and Greenberg did a superb job of selecting top notch stories, including stories by Fritz Lieber, Ray Bradbury, Isaac Asimov, Philip Dick and James Blish. If you like Science Fiction and you like the short story format, this is a must-have for your collection.

Very good SF Collection
This collection of SF shorts from the 1950's is one of the best collections of it's kind. Highly recommended for folks who like good SF.

very well done!
Tales about the elf people who dwell in the woods. Very good collection.

An excellent book for those who love elves!
I, for one love elves with a passion, and when I found this book I decided to read it out of curiosity. I was amazed to find that the stories were very captivating with twists and turns I never expected! Not only that, but the descriptions of these creatures were amazing, and very vivid. I suggest this to anyone who enjoys stories about the immortal beings of magic!

Excellent military SF
The stories in this anthology are all by top writers currently in the field. Taking place in the future, for the most part anyway, these stories generally deal with Humans in conflict with alien races. The stories are unrelated to one another, each being a separate universe unto itself. The gamut of science fiction is pretty much handled, as there are uses of such things as: FTL travel, enhanced mental abilities, cybernetically enhanced humans, time-travel paradox-type situations. . . None of these stories are found lacking in appeal, with the characters not totally flat as happens in many SF stories. If you like science fiction with a military twist, I believe you will enjoy this collection.

A terrific anthology
For those of you who are tired of the Star Trek series where the characters cannot change; this one is for you. This series of short stories takes you beyond the rigid parameters of series science fiction books. In this anothology we see those who are less than perfect; prevent near catastrophoes; and they are not the best and the brightest in fleet. The heroes in this book are ordinary people driven to accoplish extrodinary things under fire.

More than what it is
The coolest thing about this book isn't just the great short stories or the totally original presentation of psychological concepts through those stories. The coolest thing is the implied approach. The idea behind the book--that to study man we must study his expressions together with his behavior and biology--is what really makes the book so awesome. A great supplemental read for an integrated humanities course. If only someone would do an updated edition!

Good science fiction stories with psychology themes
This book was used as a textbook for an Introductory Psychology course I took in 1975. In spite of the fact that it was written as a textbook, it is an excellent read for short stories. Luckily, I happen to like the science fiction genre, and found almost all of the chapters (stories?) very well written. I can't remember discussing this book in class, although I'm sure it must have been included. There are entries about Skinner Boxes, telepathic animals, walking dream worlds, homicidal maniacs, and many other themes in which psychology is so rich. The good part about this book is that, while it introduces these themes to one who might be unfamiliar, it also unfolds them in a manner that does not broadcast that theme from the start. Thus, they are a good read for the psychologist as well. I came to Amazon to get another copy, as mine disappeared several years ago and I want it back!

Great horror tales starring Freddy!
Yeah, some of the movies in the series were REALLY bad and made Freddy look like a psycho Bugs Bunny. This book brings you really spooky stories where Freddy Kruger shows everyone how bad he really is! Well written by various writers and fun, fun, fun!

Excellent!
Dark, evil, and lovely. Freddy is at his best in these stories, even if 2 or 3 of them don't follow the continuity.

Speaking of interviews, volume two is a winner

The second volume of interviews with best-selling authors of mystery and suspense is an insightful book that provides fans with information about favorite authors. The twenty-two interviews include a Who's Who with noted writers like Koontz, Evanovich, Jance, and Parker (Robert B.) providing readers with motivations and inspirations to their story lines as well as why they avoid some topics.

The Gorman-Greenberg duo provides another insider's look at fan favorites. The interviewers consist of individuals with varying degrees of fame within the field. The dialogues are for the most part interesting though they occasionally drags on too long. Still, another masterful non-fiction from the kings of anthology interviews.

Even nonfiction readers will love these series of interviews
Twenty-one of the most famous mystery writers of the last decades have been interviewed by critics or their peers and assembled into this unique and outstanding collection. Most of the interviews appear in print for the first time. The star caliber of the exchanges is dazzling and includes such luminaries as Ed McBain, Elizabeth George, Mickey Spillane, Mary Higgins Clark, Marcia Miller, and Tony Hillerman, as well as fifteen other superstars.

All the interviews are revealing as little known, but fascinating facts about the interviewees surface. The one recurring theme that all the authors agree on is that writing is a demanding and difficult advocation. Readers, who enjoy stepping behind the scenes, will take great pleasure from this collection.

Very Entertaining
A highly entertaining series of short stories. The stories in this book are very original and are not reprinted in many other collections of Alternate History, with the exception of two. If you love alternate history, I encourage you to read, if not buy this book.

Take a wild ride through history as it could have been.
Everyone has wondered "What if..." at some point, whether the question involved his or her own life or some pivotal event in history. History as we know it is jolted and questioned at every turn in this emotional collection of engaging and imaginative fiction. Many "what if..." questions are addressed in this volume that allow authors and readers alike to rewrite history, correcting perceived wrongs or tragedies ("Suppose They Gave a Peace..."), creating heroes where none existed before ("The Lucky Strike"), and exploring horrors best left to imaginations and late night readings ("We Could Do Worse"). Any fan of science fiction will enjoy these well-selected, well-ordered stories.

One of the best mystery anthologies out there
There are times when short story collections may be disappointing but this is one of the best mystery anthologies out there. The stories are all top notch and it stays with you after having finished them. Some of the best stories are THE CASE OF THE PIETRO ANDROMACHE by Sara Paretsky where she departs from writing a story in the first person and tries something new with one of V. I. Warshawski supporting characters; Loren Estleman's I'M IN THE BOOK which is a good starting point for readers not familiar with his character, Amos Walker; and Barbara Collins's SEEING RED about a woman who has a very bad day.

My favorite story out of this whole collection is Ed Gorman's THE REASON WHY. It is a story of a twenty-year class reunion in which a couple of students have been keeping a secret since high school graduation. They receive a threatening letter saying that they must confess to their crime. It is a very powerful and moving story. If you do not care for the authors involved in the project at least try Gorman's short story.

14 short stories by favorite authors.
14 short stories by some of my favorite authors. I like the short stories because I can pick them up and set them down again and can get my mystery reading in along with my busy lifestyle. I carry this book to the dentist, doctor, and sometimes even read while I sit in traffic. Sure makes the time go faster. These are all stories of suspense that would satisfy any mystery readers taste.
