Wow! An entirely new look at classic themes.
This book of short stories is truly fab-u-lous! I really enjoyed all of the stories, which is somewhat unusual in a compilation book. Vampires in the Arts may seem Cliche, but all the authors in this book give you a new twist to old tales or entirely new themes. I highly recommend this book for all Vampire lovers.

Well crafted short stories of the Civil War
The Confederate fighting man is the subject of these 11 very touching short stories written by the likes of F.Scott Fitzgerald and Thomas Wolfe. You don't have to be a Civil War fanatic or a Southerner to appreciate this book. You only have to love a well crafted story

Good Study of What Works
Although I don't agree that every story analyzed in this book is great, I did find the commentary to be helpful. It has been said many times over that if you want to write good fiction, you need to read good fiction. However, this won't work if you don't analyze what you read as well. This book walks you through the process, providing sage advice from and excellent writer (Asimov) and world-class editor (Greenberg).

Attention Alfred Hitchcock TV Fans
Attention Alfred Hitchcock Presents fans: Death on Television, edited by Francis M. Nevins, Jr. and Martin Harry Greenberg in 1989, is a great companion to the reruns of the late 50s and early 60s TV mystery anthology series. This is a collection of short stories by Henry Slesar that were produced on the Hitchcock show. Mr. Slesar is one of the most prolific TV writers ever. He was involved in more than 40 of the AHP shows, writing both stories and teleplays. In his introduction to this book, he states that Hitchcock is usually referred to as the Master of Suspense but Mr. Slesar renames him as the Master of Irony. The stories in this book all have the signature ironic twist endings for which Alfred Hitchcock TV is famous. His stories often show the frailties of the human condition and relationships. "The Test" and "A Woman's Help" show that blood is thicker than water and apparently morality. In "The Final Vow" a young nun is tested and in "The Second Verdict" a young lawyer has gotten a guilty man acquitted. In both of these stories, help comes from unlikely sources, hardened criminals. It is fun to read the stories in this book and follow along with the show. For aspiring writers, this book can be a primer showing how the written word is brought to the small screen. Stories also include "Cop For a Day" which starred Walter Matthau and "Starring the Defense" which starred Richard Basehart when produced. Another book that I recommend is Hitchcock in Prime Time, also edited by Martin Harry Greenberg, which is a similar book that collects more of original stories that were later produced on Hitchcock's TV shows. They are written by various authors and include comments by the authors about how they felt about the teleproduction of their stories.

Unusual, vengeful, dark spin on female-written erotica
There's no option here to give this 4 1/2 stars or I would. All stories are female-authored; one story per author with one or two exceptions; most are heterosexual tales but not all. Almost all the stories are exceptionally well-written, some are relatively non-explicit. But no flowers and candlelight and romantic tunes here. It's an atypical bent to female-written erotica, and worth the read for some variety in your diet. The common thread that all these stories share is that each features a female character who has been pushed to some psychological and/or physical brink. Some heroines are weak, others frighteningly strong. Some heroines will terrify you, but almost all will earn your sympathy. But each of them has an interesting story to weave . . . a story of how desire burns.

Of particular note: The tale of the woman who is willing to relive her own death repeatedly in order to also relive the precious moments before her death that she shared with her lover.

Good old-fashioned ghost stories!
This is an old-fashioned set of ghost stories written by a host of authors, the most famous ones being Henry James & O. Henry. They are pretty standard fictional fare, well written, and full of mystery. Though the language and often old-fashioned writing can be a bit of a stumbling block, this set of ghost stories was fun to read none-the-less. Many had subtle clues and held their secrets to the very end. If you like mystery stories and ghost stories, then this book is for you. I would have given it 5 stars, but gave it 4 stars due to the old-fashioned writing, which at times was a little hard to follow. Take a copy out of your library, you'll enjoy it.

Innovative. Refreshing.
With a hot collection of writers, Election Day 2084 is an innovative preview of future politics. While some stories are well-loved classics in their own rite (Hail to the Chief), others were refreshingly new. I especially enjoyed the tight scripting of On the Campaign Trial... a telling slice of present, or future, life in the fast lane

more for the die-hard horror guru
This horror anthology provides fans with the introductory story that seventeen reader favorites started their illustrious respective career (déjà vu with last month's MAGICAL BEGINNINGS). The contributions are fun to read if only to compare the opening gamut of a renowned author with their most recent work. Each tale provides an introduction that brings further focus on the writer. The collection is well done with delightful selections from a virtual who's who of the genre, but the quality varies though none are horrible. As with MAGICAL BEGINNINGS, HORRIBLE BEGINNINGS is more for the die-hard horror guru than the occasional horror reader.
