A key to Ben Green's other stories
More easy reading autobiographical stories by Ben K. Green. This second edition combines in one volume three sets of tales previously published separately as "When I Was Just A Colt", "Up Fool's Hill Ahorseback", and "Beauty." Like most of Ben K. Green's books, these are groups of short stories that can be enjoyed a little at a time and don't need to be read in any particular order. The original volumes have been out of print for many years and are virtually impossible to find. They all have the flavor of real old-time cowboy wit and humor. Horse Tales is a must-have book for anyone who has enjoyed Ben K. Green's other stories.

"When I Was Just a Colt" relates revealing episodes from when the author was a small boy. The first is how he helped in the round up of his family's cattle. Among the others is how he bought his first horse from an itinerant preacher.

Up Fool's Hill Ahorseback" relates several tales from his teenage years. Among them are a mule drive with his friend Trouble, and the sale of two palomino horses to a blonde and her husband.

:Beauty" is a collection of stories about Ben K. Green's favorite horse. It relates how they grew up together and reads as a tribute to a dearly beloved friend.

Scattered throughout are true to life illustrations drawn by fine western artists. These will be familiar to readers of Ben K Green's other books.

Illustrated Encycl. of the World's Comm. Aircraft
I originally received this book at age 10 in 1978 as a Christmas gift from my parents. I enjoyed looking at it back then, and still enjoy it today over 20 years later. Now that I have my private pilot's license, I understand a bit more of the technical details and descriptions.
The book provides a great history of the major manufacturers, technical specs., color photos and cutaway drawings of the major airliners and business jets of the day. There are also a few large 11 x 17 fold out pictures of planes such as the Concorde and the 747-200.
It was one of my absolute favorite books growing up, and now my children like to look at it and are developing an interest in aviation as well.

Fun, Accurate and Informative
Anyone at any age with an interest in Roman history will be pleased with this coloring book! The drawings and descriptions cover the time of Julius Caesar (1st century BC) up to the 1st century AD. The drawings are well done AND well researched. The clothing, armor, tools, and equipment are all well based on archaeological evidence. After seeing so many Hollywood/TV movies with bad props, it is a relief to see it done right! This is book is a fun little history lesson.

An outstanding book.
Lost architecture has long been a passion of mine: there's something so humbling and bittersweet about buildings that exist now only in memory or on a few frames of precious film. After reading great works on the subject such as Constance Greiff's LOST AMERICA or Larry Millett's LOST TWIN CITIES, I had often complained, "Why isn't there a book like this for my home state?"

I can complain no more. LOST VIRGINIA is here at last!

The book is certainly everything I could have hoped for, combining clear, informative text with beautifully reproduced photos. Hundreds of lost buildings are finally given notice and recognition, from mansions like Rosewell, Barboursville and Pratt's Castle to Rockbridge County's splendid boom hotels (including my favorite long-vanished building, Goshen's Alleghany Hotel).

I can't recommend this book more highly or think of a better gift for any fan of architecture or Virginia history. And since there are many lost buildings yet to be documented, I hope there will some day be a sequel!

The TRUE Story of Early Farming on the Plains
This is probably one of the most enlightening books about farming on the Plains that I have read. Farmer DeLoach kept a daily diary of his thoughts about the weather, crop prices, World War I and it's affect on life on the Plains, and other "routine" occurances. Editor Neugebauer has enhanced the content by explaining and documenting the historical events that DeLoach wrote about. For example, when farmers were shipping grain overseas during WWI, he feared starvation for people in the U.S. if the Germans kept sinking the grain shipments, yet DeLoach said no one could talk about it because of the sedition acts that had been passed. Editor Neugebauer explains the sedition acts and farmer DeLoach's fears. In another example, DeLoach mentioned that the President of the U.S. had appealed to cotton gins to shut down in an attempt to drive the price of cotton up. The attempt failed because too much of the bumper crop had already been harvested, Neugebauer explained. I found the editor's notes to be very helpful and the pen and ink illustrations to be outstanding. This book *shows* the kind of effort and persistence early farming on the Plains required.

If you want to make the big bucks sueing the deep pockets because there are a lot of stupid people in this country then this is the book and class for you! However, if you subscribe to the outmoded idea that personal responsibility for you actions is a value worth having then I would skip this subject.
