A nice book in its spirit
In those days when I have a lot of spare time, by chance I found the book in library. Since the first sight, I love this book. How can we enjoy math? The spirit of mathematics consists a series of interesting problems. Sit down and play with those problems, or even better, with some good friends. Whyburn brought such a style into the classroom, and this book is the series of problems, through which those lucky students learn Topology. Perhaps the book will not be used as textbook in universities, but in its spirit, it's a classical of our age of mathematics.

Trial Bible
There is not really anything anyone can say about Trial Techniques, other than it is the Trial Bible for all up and coming litigators (and even many current litigators). A staple of America's law school classes, Trial Techniques is wonderful guide to not only give order, but an advantageous edge, to one's trial preparatons. Professor Mauet puts forth useful information in an easy to use format. Not only is he a great writer, but a wonderful lecturer on his techniques. If you have any use for attempting to organize a trial, or if you are a student of the law, this book is for you.

German Military Cuffbands, 1784-Present
Published in Hardcover by R James Bender Pub (January, 1999)
Authors: Gordon Williamson and Thomas McGuirl
Amazon base price: $44.95
Average review score:

The Best Book On This Subject
Gordon Williamson is one of the world's leading amateur historians of the German military during the Third Reich.
These cuff bands as articles of uniform, as well as "medals" are highly collectable today. Rarer cuff bands are sold for up to $3,000 apiece.
The German armed forces in the past used and still use, uniform cuff bands to denote not only unit formations but also campaign awards. This book traces the use of the cuff band by the German military starting in the 18th century and right on up to the present day. Topics include the famous "Gibralter" band, actually a British battle honor awarded to Hanovarian troops (Hanover being at the time part of the British Empire), Luftwaffe cuff bands denoting squadrens named for famous World War One Aces (Richtofen, Boelke etc.), SS Division bands ("Viking", "Das Reich"), campaign awards ("Afrika" for Rommels' Africa Corps) and the present use by the Bundeswehr and up until 1990, the NVA.
He has written the best book on this subject.
Lavishly illustrated with both black and white and colour photographs, this book helps one not only understand what the ribbon looked like, but also how it was constructed.
There is even a helpful section on spotting fakes (many produced in the U.K. and Pakistan), which are plentiful today in the collecting world.
This book is well written, well organized and contains hundreds of detailed pictures of actual items as well as historical photos. Pieces used are all original and one can rely upon the veracity of this book. The research that went into this book was worthy of a Doctoral thesis at the average university. The bibliography is breath-taking.
It seems Williamson once again left no stone unturned in his very, very detailed treatment of this subject.
If you are interested in German military history and uniforms, this is the book to buy.

Guernica, the Crucible of World War II

The Birth of Air Raids
Unparalleled in the history of warfare, the Luftwaffe's elite "Condor Legion" flattened the remote Basque town of Guernica in April 1937 during the experimental Spanish Civil War of 1936-1939.

This historical novel dissects the facts on why and how the ancient capital of Basque honor and history met such a lurid fate. It picks up history turns it into a minor degree of fiction to enhance realism and drama and culminates it with the infamous bombing operation, openly argued as the lab and crucible of the European war and a preface of events to come in Warsaw, Rotterdam, Pearl Harbor, Dresden and Tokyo.

The use of primary accounts by motley eyewitnesses absorbs the reader into an increasingly suspenseful pace. A restaurant owner, a manufacturer of weapons, a liberal priest, a radical Republican officer and an empathetic nun-turned-into-nurse make up a most credible, yet unconventional "dramatis personae."

The book also provides a generous and abundant narration on the evolution of the strategic buildup of the mission, the tense politics between German pilots and Spanish Francoist officers, the military background in the Basque valleys and villages, and the depiction of Erwin Von Richtofen (cousin of the highly decorated and ultimately fallen Red Baron) as the mastermind of the raid. The book is intelligently written.

Issels : the biography of a doctor

A Journalist Looks at a Medical Controversy
I had been following the pros and cons of Dr. Issels' cancer clinic in German magazines with great interest for years, so when his biography came out, I was the first person in my city to buy it. The British journalist who wrote it, tackled the topic with caution and without any preconceived ideas. He was therefore able to give a fair view or this controversial physician and his clinic, a clinic which had the support of its patients but was harassed by the medical establishment continually.

It has been many years since I read the book, but I remember being impressed with it. Here is the one point which I well remember. The patients at the clinic had almost invariably been given up to die by traditional medicine. Most of them escaped death, but whenever one of them died, because the treatment came too late, the clinic was shut down and prosecuted.

Valuable leaderships skills
Some months ago I was explaining the "Gordon model" to a colleague (we're both managers who work for a chain of restaurants). As we conversed, two of our new cooks, who were arguing about something, came to me to vent their frustrations. I'm sure they expected for me to decide which one of them was right about the situation and then take sides. Instead, using the No-Lose problem-solving techniques I learned from the book (finding solutions so that both parties get their needs met), I facilitated a session in which the cooks found a mutually satisfying solution to their problem. All I did is mediate, made sure they listened to one another. My colleague was amazed, noticing the gradual change in attitude and body language of the cooks - the lowered resistance - as they both realized they could solve their problem in a way that was beneficial to both of them. Later in the day my colleague noticed the same two cooks who had been arguing earlier helping each another and making jokes as they worked through the evening rush.

What I've managed to do, thanks to what I learned from L.E.T., is to fuse my team together and to create synergy. And, as the team has become more self-sufficient, that frees me up to do what I'm good at rather than always having to waste time fixing problems for them.

The techiques that Dr. Gordon teaches, I-Messages, Active Listening, etc., are tools that transcend workplace usufulness; they are techniques that help us in any kind of relationship, be they professional, personal or familial.

In short, it works!

The Life, Letters, & Journals of Lord Byron, by Thomas Moore

Lord Byron -- Authorized and Expurgated
Lord Byron's parting gift to his friend, Tom Moore, was the publication rights to Byron's autobiography. Moore, however, yielded to pressures from Lady Byron, and burned the autobiography, thereby assuring, among other things, that Lady Byron would have the rest of her life to vilify her late husband without the risk of contradiction. (Do get a copy of Doris Langley Moore's The Late Lord Byron for the details of this story.) In return, Moore was given the rights to prepare an authorized biography, which would say nothing to harm his friend's reputation. The result would have been a long, tedius book, of interest only to scholars and insomniacs -- if it weren't for one thing: in addition to Moore's writing, there are large collections of Byron's letters and journals. Byron was to letters what Pepys was to diaries, and his prose is fresh, sprightly and gossipy. The letters reveal more of Byron than any of the poems, with the obvious exception of Don Juan. They can be read for fun as much as for literary or historical insight. For the modern reader, there are far better biographies of Byron, but for anybody who has become interested in the poet, this volume combines a passable biography with an excellent collection of Byron's own writing. For those wishing to do more detailed studies, the fact that this is the closest thing to an authorized biography makes the Moore volume an essential starting point.
