The English Libertarian Heritage: From the Writings of John Trenchard and Thomas Gordon in the Independent Whig and Cato's Letters

Great Selection with Essential Intro.
This is a wonderful book that every libertarian should own. It features a solid selection of some of the best pieces in "Cato's Letters" as well as the "Independent Whig." These works expounded some of the most radical libertarian principles that the world has ever known. Trenchard and Gordon advocated natural rights, including the right to revolution, and looked upon every governmental action, as well as every individual who possessed political power, as suspect. This philosophy of is key to understanding the American Revolution, because, as Jacobson notes, Americans loved these works and read them frequently. Aside from the actual texts included here, Jacobsons' lengthy introduction and bibiography are wonderful sources of information on "Cato's" lives, thought, and influence. Nevertheless, if one is truly interesting in their work, I would suggest a purchase that the Liberty Fund's fine edition of the complete "Cato's Letters" as well.

a great introduction
This book is great. First of all, it gives the reader an introduction to the lives and thoughts of the two great masters. Also, it includes ample passages from both the INDEPENDENT WHIG amd CATO'S LETTERS. Reading this book often leads to the purchase of Cato's Letters in their entirety.

Entheogens? Yes!
This is a great book for anyone interested in this subject, whether initiate or not. It provides insight from a number of the initial 20th century pioneers, as well as gives us a window into the inner ritual as performed by the more rural indian "initiates". I would recommend this book to anyone interested in using entheogens, writing about entheogens, or anyone who has used them previously and would like a better understanding of their experience. I especially liked the different perspectives such as referring to their experiences as just that-personal experiences rather than simply hallucinations, which implies something false or nonexistant. It provides a profound respect for these experiences rather than a complete dismissal of the experience as nonsense, as our governments and "health" agencies may be tempted to do.

Great Panoramic Introduction
If you want a number of perspectives on the serious use of psychedelics, this is the book! Christian, Buddhist, spiritual, scientific and legal considerations on the subject are presented.

As an anthology, it will familiarize you with key figures in the contemporary psychedelic scene.

This is an intelligent book for people wanting to explore psychedelics for spiritual purposes. It is not a book for "stoners" who just want to trip to see "pink bunnies"

A keeper
As a Physician Assistant student, I'm overwhelmed with many other poorly written books. I keep refering to this book to make sense of the many other subjects (such as labs and diseases) that I'm grappling with. This book does not "dumb down" the material, but rather presents it as it should be presented, thorough but to-the-point. I'm very impressed with this book and it's authors.

The book on Pathophysiology
"Essentials of Pathophysiology; Concepts and Applications for Health Care Professionals" is a very detailed and informative book. The authors of this book did an excellent job of explaining the pathophysiology of all major organ systems as well as what occurs in the body during disease processes. This book has excellent pictoral charts illustrating the exact mechanisms in which our body works. This book is a very quick read, and is very understandable. In comparison to other pathophysiology books I have looked at, this one seems the most inderstandable by far (due to the many different ways in which the authors try to get their point across to the reader). I would strongly recommend this book for anyone interested in learning more about Pathophysiology.

A Fascinating Look at the Origins of Important Languages
Until such time as someone tries to fill the shoes of Jean Sammet and write a new overview of programming languages (a major job, that!), the HOPL conferences are the main source of insight into the development of programming languages that, Sapir-Whorf style, have shaped the way we view programming and the problems we try to solve with a computer. Even if someone does take up that task, the HOPL conferences are invaluable, since they provide information straight from the people involved.

This volume of the proceedings of HOPL II is thus invaluable for the student of programming. HOPL I covered the main early languages (Algol 60, FORTRAN, COBOL, LISP, APT, BASIC...); HOPL II covers important languages of more recent vintage (Algol 68, Pascal, C, C++. more recent dialects of LISP). C.H. Lindsey's fine paper on the turbulent development of Algol 68, the best language you probably never used and a major influence on later languages, is worth the price of admission by itself.

Outstanding Collection of Resources
I have read many many computer jounrals about the history of computing. Very few resources have put the kind of time and effort that Thomas Bergin has done in his book. Along with assistant editor, RIck Gibson, both men do a fine job collecting the best of the best resources and giving it right to the public upfront. I wish Bergin can do another book or something Internet related because this is truly apart of computing that we do not really have much material on.

This book changed my life!
A couple days ago I was explaining the "Gordon model" to a coleague (we're both managers who work for a chain of restaurants). As we conversed, two of our new cooks, who were arguing about something, came to me to vent their frustrations. I'm sure they expected for me to decide which one of them was right about the situation and then take sides. Instead, using the No-Lose problem-solving techniques I learned from the book (finding solutions so that both parties get their needs met), I facilitated a session in which the cooks found a mutually satisfying solution to their problem. All I did is mediate, made sure they listened to one another. My coleague was amazed, noticing the gradual change in attitude and body language - the lowered resistence - as they both realized they could solve their problem in a way that was beneficial to both of them. Later in the day my colegue noticed the same two cooks who had been arguing earlier helping one another and making jokes as they worked through the evening rush.

I came into Amazon to order a copy of L.E.T. as a gift for my coleague when I saw there was an opportunity to pay back Dr. Gordon by reviewing the book. So, here's my pitch: There are management theories aplenty out there. But the fundamental truth is nothing will ever get done well if communication between people isn't smooth and effective. What I've managed to do, thanks to what I learned from L.E.T., is to fuse my team together and to create synergy. And, as the team has become more self-sufficient, that frees me up to do what I'm good at rather than always having to waste time fixing problems for them.

The techiques that Dr. Gordon teaches, I-Messages, Active Listening, etc., are tools that transcend workplace usufulness; they are techniques that help us in any kind of relationship, be they professional, personal or familial.

In short, BUY THIS BOOK!

L.E.T. gives you excellent tools for work and personal life.
I read the book in 1990, attended a seminar, and put the communication skills into practice in my work life and my personal life. Dr. Gordon does a great job of showing how to use "I-messages" and active listening to communicate effectively and to get folks to solve their own problems. There's even a good section on effective meetings.

Our company has made L.E.T. one of the foundation elements of supervisor training.

This tops my top 10 list on Best books on Negotiation
Surprise! A sales book tops my list of negotiation resources. But this sales book focuses on the most basic communication strategies which, if mastered, form the basis of any interaction--including negotiation. Sales Effectiveness Training is an offshoot of Gordon's earlier book, Parental Effectiveness Training (PET), itself an invaluable negotiations resource. But I didn't think that even I could convince people to read a parental training manual to improve their negotiation skills. For extra credit, check out PET; it's well written, by Gordon alone; he develops his examples in greater depth than is done in Sales Effectiveness Training. What's exciting about Sales Effectiveness Training is its unique emphasis on skills we'd otherwise overlook. When most people come to me for advice, they want to know what to say, and how to say it. But the most important thing is how you listen, not what you say. This book puts the importance of listening skills -- both as a technique for understanding and as a method of creating rapport in the context of sales effectiveness. Other Batna.com articles will examine these principles in the specific context of negotiations; but the material in Sales Effectiveness Training is highly valuable as is.

When the client runs the show
When in presence of a salesperson I have the impression he/she leads the discussion where he/she wants to go. The main difference with Sales Effectiveness Training is that the client leads: the salesperson acts as a consultant, faciliator to help the client make his/her own decision. That brings trust and make THE difference

You are there amidst the calamity
One day, my San Francisco 5th-grade class went to visit an exhibit about the 1906 Earthquake and Fire. While there, we met some survivors, old and ancient, but still alive with vivid memories of the disaster. To us, it had always been just something you read about. But, the survivors made the horror come alive, and suddenly we were quiet with awe and fright. This book gave me the same impression. Broken into a chronological pattern, we relive the days before, the days during, and the days after the conflagration. I couldn't put this book down! The book also told us something our beloved City always tried to hush up, and that was regarding the Bubonic Plague. The rats overran the City, due to broken sewer pipes and destruction, and with them they carried the fleas of the Plague. Astonishing. It can all happen again and reminds us how lucky Baghdad-By-The-Bay really was (only a few plague cases and no tsunami even though the Bay was lowered by four inches). You gotta get a hold of this book.

In 1906, where did nature and chaos meet? San Francisco
Gordon Thomas and Max Witts take the reader in detail, minute by minute into a living hell. They trace the damage done by the earthquake from its starting point out in the Pacific, ripping up onto the California coast and into the city by the bay. The earthquake broke the water and gas lines and because San Francisco was, and still is, built so close, a small fire spread. The military took over and some of the soldiers shot people without trial for looting and even not moving fast enough. And yet, the military looted items that they were suppose to guard, even the relief supplies. This book makes you feel like you are right in the middle of the action. The reader will feel like fighting the fire with the firemen, helping the common citizen trying to safe his home, or serching for a lost child for a frighten mother...not knowing if the child is dead or alive. One word comes to mind after reading this book...WOW!!!

Excellent historical storytelling!
In the vein of Walter Lord's A NIGHT TO REMEMBER and DAY OF INFAMY, this wonderful book details the horrific journey of persecuted Jews and their desperate attempt to flee Nazi Germany. As good as the movie which it spawned. A fascinating and important read, especially for history enthusiasts.

Should be in every Holocaust library
"Voyage of the Damned" is the infamous true story of the ill-fated 1939 voyage of the S.S. St. Louis, which carried 937 Jews who were fleeing Hitler. They hoped for freedom, but found only disappointment and, in some cases, death. The St. Louis made it safely Cuba, but the passengers were turned away under the influence of Hitler's anti-Jewish propaganda. Next, they sailed for the Florida Coast, only to be refused entry into the USA because of immigration quotas. For weeks the St. Louis sailed up and down the coast while Congress debated whether to make an exception and let them in. In the end, even a plea from President Roosevelt could not open America's doors to these refugees. The St.Louis was sent back to Europe, where her passengers were dispersed to France, Belgium, Great Britain, and the Netherlands. Some perished in Hitler's concentration camps. Others lived to tell the story.

This tragic event remains an ugly blot on America's past, and is one of the reasons for the "Law of Return" in modern Israel (which allows any Jew who is fleeing persecution in any country to enter Israel immediately upon arrival with no hassles.) It is also the reason that Israel was the first country in the world to grant political asylum to Vietnamese "boat people" fleeing the Communist regime at the end of the Vietnam War. The story also had an effect on America's current immigration laws, which make better provisions for granting asylum.

"Voyage of the Damned" was first published in 1974 and became an instant bestseller. It was made into a movie in 1977, and won three Academy Award nominations. It went through a number of printings, and was re-issued in 1994 as a fine "coffee-table" hardcover with 300 pictures, including reproductions of tickets, telegrams, passports, menus, newspaper articles, official documents, etc. as well as photos of the crew and passengers. To make the story more personalized, the 1994 version also features "cameo" photo albums, focusing on three specific families. For sheer wealth of information as well as human interest, the photo edition is the one to buy -- if you can find a copy.
