The Bathroom
If you are human and have ever had the need to use a bathroom for any reason, you would find something of interest in this book. Every use and function of the bathroom structure has been considered. Some of the findings in this book might appear crude but it reveils much of the stuff we have been sitting on for years to be just one step above a hole in the ground. Bodily hygene before the invention of the bathroom to modern ideas of what a bathroom is and how our society regards such matters are researched in detail. This book is fun & informative. Hours of leg numbing reading.

A must-have book on redesigning the bathroom.
This unique book is the only scientific analysis of bathrooms and their functions that I have ever been able to find. The author has had a major influence on, or actually helped write, the building standards that most modern bathrooms are built in accordance with. Nevertheless, the book concludes that the bathroom is an essentially mis-designed space in virtually all North American homes. The very fixtures such as sinks, bathtubs and toilets are poorly designed, and need to be completely rethought. This book is essential for those interested in designing objects for human use, the architecture of bathrooms, and the psychology of the continued use of poor standards. One caveat is that the book contains graphic depictions of people urinating and defecating, in order to present ground data for use in fixture design.

Finally, it should be noted that the author is rumored to be hard at work on a revised 3rd edition, which will hopefully see print sometime in the next few years

An awesome book...an absolute MUST read.
Believe it or not, this book is one of the more seminal works of the second half of the twentieth century. Why it is out of print (and it is VERY hard to find, because no one will part with their copy) is a complete mystery. This very substantial book (hundreds of pages, large format, hundreds of photos) is the absolute definitive work on bathroom design. In awe-inspiring detail, Alexander Kira analyzes bathroom functions versus bathroom fixtures. Imagine, if you will, hundreds of pictures showing people showering and urinating in front of calibrated background grids. The book is at once scholarly, on target, and hysterically funny. It will forever change the way you think of the simple toilet. If you ever see a copy in a used bookstore...grab it

The very best Audio Bible available
This reading of the King James Version Bible by Alexander Scourby is a treasure! I own or have listened to most of the other audio Bibles out there and there just is no comparison. Scourby reads in a transparent manner that allows the Bible to come alive. With some audio Bibles I have a hard time listening through the reader's radio-announcer inflections to the underlying message. Not so with Scourby, he justly earns his title of the "Voice of the Bible".

I recommend this Audio CD highly. I don't believe you will be disappointed with it in any way.

A Great work
I wonder when this will be available in CD format? My tapes have had it!

Scorby Reads The Bible Well
Ever had trouble reading the King James version? Alexander Scorby is the reader here and makes the KJV even more enjoyable. His deep, smooth vocals are great for the long drive, to make your work-day go by quicker, to relax to at home, or as an aid in studying the Word. I highly recommend this to anyone who has any reason to reading the Bible.

The main source on Alexander
Although Arrian is not always reliable, he's what we have. He brought to together a number of sources to write this account which goes more or less linearly through all of Alexander's major battles, the rebellions, and his death.

The text sometimes includes dialogue that is almost certainly made up but is also quite fun. Likewise the descriptions of the battles and the numbers of troops on each side. Arrian doesn't omit the legends either, like the 'untying' of the Gordian knot.

This translation is magnificent. It is accurate and utterly readable, with minimal but effective notes. If you have great interest in Alexander this is the book to read. This is what all the historians base their accounts on and it is sure to be the basis for the upcoming films.

The True Triumph of Greek Civilization
I thoroughly enjoyed Arrian's account of Alexander, which I found to be lively and readable in this translation by De Selincourt. I think this book should be read in more courses on "Greek Thought and Literature" and "Western Civ." and the like, both because Arrian shows how the tradition of fine Greek historiography stayed alive well into the second century A.D., and also because his very thorough account proves to be a natural continuation of the stories told by Herodotus and Thucydides. This book completes the historical narrative of the rise of Greek civilization, so that the era of Athenian hegemony can be connected with the beginning of the Hellenistic period in the 4th century B.C. -- the true triumph Greek civilization, in my opinion.

After all, if not for Alexander, would we care nearly so much about the Greeks? Alexander subdued the world from Illycrium to the Indus valley, bringing Greece to the East and the East to the Greeks. Without his conquests, the Greek language and culture would never have become so widespread or influential. He paved the way for the Romans, and ultimately, for the Christians after him. This brilliant General-King was therefore the creator of the history, not only of his own times, but also of the times which followed him.

Towards the beginning of the book, Arrian laments on behalf of Alexander that this greatest conquerer of all time had yet to have his deeds written down in a manner which was suited to his magnificence. Achilles had his Homer, but Alexander's exploits remained unsung. Arrian therefore boldly and boastfully steps forward, confident that his literary talents are a match for his subject. Let the reader judge Arrian's (or De Selincourt's) poetic gifts as he may, but the story itself guarantees its greatness.

An unbiased account.
Arrian gives us a picture of the "total" Alexander. Though he constantly praises his every virtue he never forgets to detail his faults. Slow going and a bit bewildering at first but moves to a fast paced and exciting end. Highly recommended.

A Grand Source-Book
As a follower of the Old Religion, I find this book a valuable glimpse into the roots and source of inspiration. It is far better and more solid scholarship than the vast bulk of modern Pagan reconstructionist writings. I'd recommend this as an essential part of a folk-spirituality book collection.

The One and Only
The number of books on Celtic spirituality in the past ten years is stultifying. The inane banalities poured out in most of these books is paralleled only by the repititiousness of most of their contents.

This book, however, is the real thing. These poems were collected in the last century by Alexander Carmichael in his work in the Scottish highlands. They truly display the sense of closeness to the earth, and closeness to God, in daily life that is the hallmark of Celtic spirituality, and as expected in a collection of poems from the poor and humble, there is not a speck of pretension in any of it. The book has been a minor classic in its own field ever since it was first published, and now it is finally getting the widespread recognition it deserves.

My only regret is that this version doesn't include the Gaelic versions that Carmichael collected alongside the English translation; I believe that the original edition included these. If you're burned out on the absurdities of Celtic spirituality which are served up by the truckload nowadays, this book will give you your faith back.

Mind Blowingly Beautiful Verses
This is NOT a another modern book about the ancient traditions of "Celtic Spirituality". I, for one, am extremely grateful. This is a collection of traditional prayers and incantations used by the Gaelic speakers living in the Highlands and Islands of Scotland. These "poems" are simple, sparse, superstitous and incredibly beautiful. When Carmichael documented these in the 1800's, the Gaelic culture and its belief systems were quickly dying out amidst a wave of modernisation, protestantism and urban flight. These poetic artifacts are a true window on the beliefs, hopes, fears and superstitions of the pre-modern world. Many of these were used to ritualize common daily tasks. These chants find the sublime in the pedestrian, in a way that is completely devoid of self-conciousness. The poems in this collection are unique and priceless. Carmichael did a wonderful thing in preserving these gems for future generations. If you are interested in understanding the unromanticized and complicated truth of the spiritual side to Gaelic culture, this is indispensible. If not, perhaps the latest coffee table book of "Celtic Prayers" is more your speed...

A complete course in self hypnosis
This book/tape combination is a comprehensive guide to learning how to do self hypnosis. It not only gives a detailed background and theoretical grounding in this field, but also takes people step-by-step into the experience. It is unique in how it gives specific scripts for various problems, as well as teaching the reader how to make up their own personalized ones by explaining the logic of how to do so. I found this book very helpful, well written, and the tape easy to listen to. I also liked the relaxation trance on side 2 of the tape.

Very helpful guide to self hypnosis!
This book is very readable and informative about hypnosis. I learned a great deal about the topic and found the descriptions interesting. But most importantly, I was able to use the clear exercises to hypnotize myself and make the changes I wanted. The tape was especially helpful and also very relaxing. I highy recommend this book and tape!

Top of the pile
These authors are perhaps best known for their book entitled 'Principles of Self Hypnosis' (now out of print) which for many years was the most regularly recommended primer on this subject. This academic work completely updates the former book and adds much new research to the subject area. It is very extensive in nature and written in a style that facilitates access to both the professional and the lay person wishing to use self hypnosis for their own benefit. The book is accompanied by an excellent audiotape which clearly demonstrates many of the techniques described in the book. Whilst appearing a little expensive when compared with other self hypnosis books, this book and audiotape can definitely claim to be 'top of the pile' in quality of content, research and writing style.

Very Helpful Book
I have been tired for most of my life. In college they used to prefix my name with "fall asleep as soon as she sits down girl". After numerous blood tests, a doctor finally reccommended nutrition. Pam's book really helped me understand the causes of my fatigue. I can't say I am full of energy now, but I am much more energetic than ever before and I have lost five pounds to boot! Thanks, Pam.

My life is in this book
Pam Smith has once again done a great job! The book explained so well what the pros and cons for every trend diet and how these do not work. I, myself am a living testimony of that. I look forward to staying and keeping on a steady track to achieve my maximum health level. The Diet Trap lists out the meals, snacks and even a shopping list of all that our bodies need. A great book with wonderful effects.

The Energy Edge by Pamel Smith
This book was so full of information for an easy to follow plan for your diet and your life! I couldn't put it down! I wanted to know more! I wanted to get up to practice what I was reading and she was right. No frills, just practical information you can use. I knew she was a Christian and I could tell the influence on her book. Very balanced and enlightening!

The American City : What Works, What Doesn't

How cities work--an interdisciplinary approach
When Alexander Garvin's "The American City" was first published in 1996, it fast became a classic text in universities all over the country in the study of the city. Because it is an incredibly rich and profoundly insightful interdisciplinary exploration of all aspects of the planning of cities, it has been eagerly embraced by students of architecture, planning, urban studies, government, finance, and even sociology. Because it is so compelling written and marvelously accessible, however, it has also become a beloved book by lay people interested in any and every aspect of what determines the life and success of the created environment in which they live.

Since most of the original edition was actually completed by 1990, it did not include the last decade of development in the fast-changing world of urban thinking. In this second edition, Mr. Garvin brings his study of the city into the twenty-first century, including examples, issues, and trends that did not exist at the time the first edition was written. More strikingly, however, he has also succeeded in reorganizing and restating his original material-sometimes subtly, and sometimes more extensively-in even more powerful and effective ways. But whether it is the almost completely new chapter on Retail Shopping, or the only mostly preserved gem from the first edition on Parks and Playgrounds, all of the clarity and vitality so characteristic of Mr. Garvin's writing are enhanced in this new edition. The new edition also features numerous new photographs-a particular treat to the many readers who especially appreciate the masterful way he has illustrated his points with visual images, virtually all taken by Mr. Garvin himself. (Since he is firmly committed to the principle that one actually has to experience and explore in person the environments one is studying, the author makes sure to use images that reflect his own personal vision, which fortunately for us is as artistically pleasing as it is intellectually informative.)

Whether one wishes to understand the history of American cities, learn the principles of real estate development, research the trends in government involvement in housing and urban renewal, get insight into why particular undertakings in particular cities worked or failed, or, most excitingly, sense the incredible complexity and interaction of all those forces (historical, political, architectural, legislative, sociological, economic, etc.) that determine and describe the life of the city, this book is a must-read-and one that is as enjoyable as it is informative and enlightening.

The definitive modern planning manual...newly updated
There is a very good reason that Garvin's The American City has become required reading for most of the major urban affairs programs across the country: it stands alone as the definitive book on practical urban planning as we enter the 21st century. The first edition of this book, released in 1995, was a breath of fresh air in the field as it avoided emotional polemics in favor of thorough, pragmatic analyses of virtually every aspect of urban planning. This new, 560 page edition builds on the strengths of the original but has been substantially updated. It now includes coverage of the effects of stadiums and entertainment centers, BIDs, environmental factors, and much more. It has also been updated with the latest statistical information and additional stunning photos, as well as follow-ups on the projects originally covered in the first edition.

Garvin himself is uniquely qualified to write this book. For over thirty years he has taught Yale University's Introduction to the Study of the City course, while remaining busy as an architect, real estate developer and Director of Comprehensive Planning for the City of New York. After the publication of the original edition he became the Managing Director for Planning of New York's bid to host the 2012 Olympics (which was just selected as one of the finalists), and this year he was chosen to head up the complete rebuilding of the World Trade Center site after September 11 as the Vice President for Planning, Design and Construction of the Lower Manhattan Development Corporation.

If you have any interest whatsoever in the history, design, or improvement of America's urban landscape, this is the book to get. As Paul Goldberger, the former architecture critic of the New York Times has written: "I will read it again and again, sometimes from front to back, sometimes from back to front, sometimes to page through at a random, sometimes to consult and help me with a particular problem. I guarantee dog-eared pages within a year."

The definitive work on urban planning for this generation
Alex Garvin has functioned singlehandedly as the entire Urban Planning department at Yale University for over twenty years, while serving at various times as the Director of Comprehensive Planning for the City of New York, a member of the New York City Planning Commission, an expert for the Urban Land Institute, a real estate developer and the facilities analyst for New York's bid for the Olympics. This book is his masterwork, providing an expanded version of his Yale course illustrated with hundreds of examples drawn (and photographed) from cities all over America.

Without question, if you are going to get only one book dealing with the problems and solutions of contemporary urban development, this MUST be it.
