Colonial Hong Kong in the Eyes of Elsie Tu

A nice book
Elsie spent her whole life helping those underprivileged and gained a high reputation. However, recently we seldom hear Elsie expresses her ideas in the mass media. What a pity !What's the problem ? I bet it's the problem that our media do not accept voices from the minority. Although I do not agree all the points of Elsie's politicial ideas in this book, I still think her ideas are incisive and peculiar. They're worth to think about. For those who are interested in Hong Kong social history or concern about the democracy movement, I recomnmend they should read this book. I bet they may have a more in-depth view to today's Hong Kong political situation after reading the book.

Solid account of afterlife visitations
It doesn't tell you how to contact the dead yourself, but I still enjoyed reading the experiences of others.

Elsie Lee's Washington, D.C. book
This particular book is probably my least favorite of all her books I have read. It starts out more as a love story than a mystery although there is a mystery involving smuggled political information and murder. After you get into the story it does improve but I really didn't like the way this one started out. Still I wouldn't give up this book for anything. I have read most of her books anywhere from 4-5 times each and every time I re-read one I enjoy it as much as the first time I ever read it. I think the main thing I have against this one is it's about women "trying to get a man" and that scenario has never been one of my favorites -- it seems sort of demeaning -- a woman is not a woman without a man, but if you can get past this part it's a wonderful mystery, as usual.

Early American Inns and Taverns by Elise Lathrop
From the Atlantic to the Pacific, from Mexico to Canada, in fact from every state of the Union, the author has gathered the romance and historic story of more than thirteen hundred early American Inns and Taverns -- a narrative unique in the literature of early American days. The book will be found inclusive, authoritative and definitive. Certain necessary limitations have been set, for example, on the Atlantic seaboard no inn less than one hundred years old has been included, while in the West, where settlement has been more recent seventy-five years has, with few exceptions, been the figure taken.
With all this the book is by no means a mere catalogue. The author has realized to the full the picturesque drama of old posting days, and has recreated this romantic and colorful past as a background across which her narrative moves with a vitality that never slackens. Strange mysteries haunt more than one old inn; tales of murder and elopement; stories of secret meetings, of plotters and revolutionists; and while dramatic intrigue holds attention there never lacks an enlivening touch of humor in the many quaint anecdotes of strange bills-of-fare and still stranger inn-keepers.

A great sequal to the Elsie Dinsmore series
Many years have past since the last book and now Elsie and Edward have three more children Lily, Rosemary, and Daniel. After a terrible accident Molly Percival and her brother Dick also come to live at Ion. Though Lily is very ill with a heart condition. This book goes on to tell about Missy's future husband and the Travaillas' trips. A very good book for anyone who likes the Elsie Dinsmore books.

Another good book in a wonderful series
A continuation of the Elsie Dinsmore series, Elsie's Widowhood is another beautiful book. It tells about Elsie's faith even after her husband dies. If you like the other books in the series, this is a definite must read. Even though the title sounds depressing, many other love stories and things happen in the book. I found it unfortunate that the author chose to have Elsie's husband die this soon. I have loved every book in this series. These books are good examples of Christianity and are positive influences on children.

Folk-Lore from the Cape Verde Islands (American Folklore Society Memoirs Series)

Rare collection of Folk lore from Cape Verde
This book was originally issued as two volumes. This reprint is bound in one volume, consisting of the original two. One is dedicated to English translations, the other is written in the local Criol language. The folk lore collection also includes riddles (divinhas), of which the solution of some are forgotten today. The tales were collected in the large population of Cape Verdean emigres around Boston in the early 20s. The tales told are a mixture of Portuguese and African origin. They are a unique collection, and the transcripts into kriol (no standard exists to date)are well done - to the extent that an islander can tell from which island the storyteller originates! For anyone interested in folk lore, in Cape Verde and in the way two different cultures melts into one - this book is highly recommended. Olav Aalberg, Oslo - NORWAY

The Next Best To Heyer
Although I doubt that anyone will ever manage to top Georgette Heyer at Regency novels, Elsie Lee comes closer than anyone else I've read and Prior Betrothal is one of her best. With the exception of the uncle who adopted her, Clytie Flower has been disowned by her family on the instructions of the head of family. However, on discovering a betrothal agreement signed by her father and the late Duke of Banglor, between her and the duke's heir, her uncle comes up with the idea of trading the duke an unbetrothal in exchange for the assistance of the dowager duchess in bringing Clytie out. The result is a charming and charmingly funny novel.
