A Great Book - One of my favorites.
"Elsie's Children" continues the story of Elsie Dinsmore, which begins in "Elsie Dinsmore". The book opens with Elsie, who is a mother, joyfully telling her children that they have another sibling. From settling her children's quarrels, to calming their tears this is a darling book that I really enjoyed. Elsie's Christian attitude, and her loving example should be something we all try to portray in our daily lives. The "Elsie Dinsmore" books are some of my favorites, and Elsie is the picture of the ideal sister, daughter, wife and mother we women should all strive to become.

An historical novel about a Civil War widow..........
Elsie, the storie's heroine, is a woman who has just lost her home, her children, and her husband in the final throes of the Civil War. Determined to start over far from any memories of her past, she begins to make her way west. In doing so, she joins up with several others who, in various ways, have also had their lives severely changed by the terrible war. The author is a retired M.D., and an accomplished amateur historian, who has a great deal of respect and admiration for the strong female characters that he has created in his novel.... (This book would make an excellent subject for a movie on the Lifetime network...) This story is well researched and written, from both an historical and technical perspective, and has well developed characters whom the reader soon begins to know and care for..... In summation, this story shows the abilities of many otherwise common folk to overcome great hardships and show that strong will and character can be all you need to do something truly great with your life.

It's Finally Here!
I've been waiting for this book for a long time, and it was worth the wait! Several years have passed since the last Elsie book, and Elsie is now 21.She has passed her majority, and with that comes more responsiblities and difficulties. She is also wondering if she will ever find that one special guy to spend her life with. Rising doubts from her distasterous experience with Tom Jackson a few years ago cause Elsie to worry that she won't know what true love really is. She does know though, that her Heavanly Father will always be with her, no matter what happens. She finally does find her true love, and knows that he will always love her and protect her through thick and thin. Also including a touching description of Elsie's visit to her birthplace, where her beautiful mother lived and died, this book is a wonderful addition to the Elsie Dinsmore series.

Fort Center: An Archaeological Site in the Lake Okeechobee Basin (Ripley P. Bullen Series)

Great example of how to report an archaeological site
Fort Center, near Lake Okeechobee Florida, is one of the most fascinating archaeological sites in America. The Indians who lived there built mounds and gigantic circles of dirt, may have been the first in America to cultivate maize, and participated in a mortuary cult.

This book chronicles the excavation of the site and discusses the finds.

Appropriately illustrated, this book is a model of how archaeological research should be reported.

Moms - The Best Period
I was lucky enough to find a used copy of this book and it shows that Moms was a true original and was the greatest Female Comedian of the 20th Century.

As a Ventriloquist, I draw from this type of humor and it was interesting to see how Moms grew up and how she took care of her family and fans.

A must read for Humor Historians.

In God's Waiting Room: Learning Through Suffering
Published in Paperback by Moody Publishers (August, 1985)
Author: Lehman Strauss

Used price: $1.65
Collectible price: $1.64

A great source of courage and comfort
In March of 1982, barely nine months after his 50th wedding anniversary, Rev. Lehman Strauss received the crushing news that his wife had been stricken by a massive stroke. While spending days, weeks and even months at his suffering wife's side, Rev. Strauss learned that some trials in life go on very slowly indeed, and as we sometimes find ourselves in a doctor's waiting room, we also sometimes find ourselves in God's waiting room. "Wait on the Lord: be of good courage, and He shall strengthen thine heart: Wait, I say, on the Lord." (Psalm 27:14)

In this overwhelming book, written while Rev. Strauss and his wife were going through their time of testing, the author takes his vast knowledge of scripture, and organizes it into nine chapters of courage and comfort for those who are also waiting on the lord. As a husband who also has to wait beside a suffering wife, I have found this book to be a great source of courage and comfort. I highly recommend this book to anyone facing a trial in their life, one that requires not action, but quiescence.

Longfellow meets Walt Disney!
LC's Poetry and her column transports you back to cozier, homier, more childlike times.

Her poem "The Steeplejack"is reminescent of Longfellow's "The Sea Captain's Daughter".It somehow calls up memories of older books written in the early1900's that you'd find in a small town public library.

The fairhaired girl in Steeplejack wants to climb the steeple only to be metwith tragedy. LC's description brings you back to the days of bookswith Art Nouveau covers.

Although her poems involve an innocentingenue's flirtation with danger or a young woman's dance with aghost, her columns are playful and rambunctious, like Chip and Dale -the Disney chipmunks.

One of the best regencies ever!
This is one of the best regency novels ever written, on a par with Georgette Heyer's best.

Unusally written from the hero's point of view, from where his uncle's "little dab" of a young widow comes into his life with her ladies companion, hindu servents, talking bird, mongoose and two siamese cats (oh, those cats!), it abounds with wit and humor. The change in this lord's life, from ennui to awareness of his own desires, and the machinations of the Nabob's Widow with his family and friends, are a pure joy to read.
