A brisk, but not too brief account of Washington and the times surrounding him. Alden touches on most every event and aspect concerning the subject: from Shay's Rebellion to Martha's disposition, from the Hamilton-Jefferson Feud to his agricultural experiments. It is objective without trying to debunk a great man. Only the cursory discussion on slavery does the junvenile yankee condescention surface (Whose ships were involved in the slave trade even after the Virginians pushed through its ban via the Constitution? Yankees ie the Great Hypocrites of All Time.) It is, however, a thorough and interesting biography and highly recommended.

The story of Vancouver's voyage to the Pacific North West is one of much hardship, persistance and determination. John Naish tells the story of the voyage by cross referencing the journals and diaries of four of the key players in this expedition. Taken individualy the journals are a great read themselves but when used to collaborate or just to fill in blanks it results in a very pleasant read. It takes the reader into the world of 1791-1795 in such a way that we can forget, briefly, what we have today and imagine the world during the times of the French Revolution and the emergence of America as a nation.

Written as a series of lectures by Bennett before Gurdjieff died in 1949, this is an interesting journey into the past as well as yet another lucid account of the essential principles of Gurdjieff's ideas about man from Bennett's pen. Compare this to a later set of Bennett's lectures recently reprinted as "Making a Soul" to see how Bennett's understanding of these themes by the mid-'50's. Then read his "Deeper Man" to see what a rich harvest his understanding had produced by the mid-'70's. Intoxicating stuff!

This book contains excellent choices from the writings of Jonathan Edwards, the first great philosopher in the American colonies, including some of his earliest writings, mostly just philosophical or biological musings. It reflects some interesting developments in the maturation of his thinking. It also has letters to friends, colleagues, and family members. Some of his most well-known sermons are alongside some representative samples of his sermons. Unfortunately, there is room for only excerpts from his longer works, such as The Religious Affections, but that can't be helped in an affordable popular anthology. If you want all of his works, but the complete works from the same publisher. If you just want a representative sample of some of the best works of this great theologian and philosopher, get this.

This book is most helpful to those who have to find information about materials outside their area of expertise. The listing is extremely broad, and unlike other books, does not just focus on engineered or structural materials. The negative side of this breadth is the small amount of information on each material (sometimes only one or two paragraphs). This small amount of information, however, is usually enough to direct a search into a more productive direction. I have benefitted from this book on the last 4 jobs I have held. Definitely worth having.

My professor suggested this book and deemed it the "Bible on Evidence". I bought it and it is. A great book that will clear up many of your questions. If you don't understand what your law professor is saying, this book will make it clearer.

This book is a rather facile account of the murder on Nov. 23, 1849, of Dr. George Parkman, uncle of historian Francis Parkman, by a Harvard professor. This is a famous case, and this book gives all the gruesome details. Boston in 1849 was a small world and many famous persons flit thru the pages of this book: Longfellow, Melville, Charles Sumner, Edward Everett, Oliver Wendell Holmes, etc. As a true crime book I found it objectionable that the author purported to tell us what persons thought, but overall the book is not bad and holds one's interest. A shorter account of the same crime written by the famed crime writer Edmund L. Pearson can be found in the book Crimes That Shocked America, edited by Brant House and published in 1961 by Ace Books, Inc.

Neurology is one of the most difficult courses in medical school. Eponyms that are so many in neurology add a big burden to the already dreadful task of remembering the location of nuclei, the origin and destination of nerve tracks and constellation of syndromes. As medical school progresses, I start to appreciate eponyms which give more humane description of the anatomical structures, the symptoms or the diseases. Koehler and colleagues have done a beautiful book collecting the common neurological eponyms that are categorized into 5 parts: structures and processes, symptoms and signs, reflexes and other tests, syndromes, diseases and defects. The book was edited concisely to cover the origin and detailed description of the eponyms. Although it is not exhaustive of all neurological eponyms, the book serves well in helping to understand the common ones, Babinski's sign, Guillian-Barre' syndrome, Alzheimer's disease, etc. It's entertaining style suits not only for neurological profession but for medical students and other health profession as well.

If you're interested in this sort of thing as I am this book could be of great value however the price is unreal. I have a CD that does much the same for the entire country at a third the price of one state however this book is MUCH more accurate and shows county boundaries that only occured for as little as three days. The CD is also easier to use. That said I'll likely ask for the book as one of those Christmas presents I wouldn't buy for myself.

I have used this book as a support while doing a short course in modelling and simulation, and this book have showed me some very useful tips. The short introductions, and then computer code is a nice way of learning in my opinion. Thanks!
