The Malcontent (Revels Student Editions)
Published in Paperback by Manchester Univ Pr (2001)
Authors: John Marston and George K. Hunter
Amazon base price: $9.95
Average review score:

A Fun Play!
Malevole, the title character of Marston's masterpiece, has good reason to be a malcontent: he is the disguised, deposed rightful ruler of Genoa. The play is a collection of intrigues, questions as to who knows what about whom, and disguises. It is a great joy to read and one of my favorite pieces of Renaissance literature.

The New Mermaid edition is very nice, with a good introduction, but the language has been modernized more than in most editions.

Martyrdom According to John Chrysostom: "To Live Is Christ, to Die Is Gain"
Published in Hardcover by Edwin Mellen Press (1997)
Author: Gus George Christo
Amazon base price: $109.95
Average review score:

A Phenomenal Works
Gus George Christo, who has dedicated his life to the Christian stance, has meticulously research the writings on martyrdom from St. John Chrysostom, that noble and insightful Pastor of Constantinople who lived around 400 AD. Gus then organized his findings into different chapters which focus on the different meanings that Chrysostom found in, and attributed to, Christian martyrdom. Examples of these would be the meaning and significance of martyrdom by death ("a baptism in blood") or martyrdom by imitation of the sufferings of Christ, to name a few. There is also some very fascinating chapters on the subject of relics (here- the bones or remains of a died martyr or holy person). Gus writes of how these relics carry great powers that can be translated to one who visits the relics and to ward off the powers of evil. The book is very specific and succinct on what Chrysostom wrote or said, and Gus may have effectively intrepreted the sacred philosophy behind Chrysostom's concepts of Christian martyrdom in such a way that makes it both understandable and fascinating for an interested individual to read. However, there is a sort of paradox in the notion of how pain, suffering, and even death can actually be doorways to God, which requires a shift of perception for most of us. But Gus provides plenty of examples and explanations to help us to grasp this radical concept. Although shrewd scholarly effort clearly went into his book, this book is far from being tedious or boring. In fact it is just the opposite- it is very intense reading, when taking into consideration the subject matter, and goes over the topics creatively and somewhat briskly, but very thoroughly. It is just awesome how Gus has compiled and formatted this work to about 200 pages (approximately). Also, the book is presented in consummate style- it has a high-quality, uniquely textured hardcover with an early artwork representation of Chrysostom on the front, and a very nice color picture of Gus himself on the back.

If I have any one reservation, it is the price of this book, which is daunting. My only consolation is that, where else are you going to find a basically complete body of work on Martyrdom According to St. John Chrysostom? Probably nowhere. Also, the high quality and research that went into this book helps. But again, its quite a cost to pay, so I must include this CAVEAT EMPTOR- this book is for hardcore chrysostom fans, and people really, really interested in Christian Martyrdom. Another warning, which echoes a statement I made above, is that the subject matter may be a leap for most people's minds and faith, too comfortable as we may be in this life. Bravo George Gus Christo, you have done a fantastic job with this. Chrysostom would be "stoked" and you have opened my eyes to an incredible realm. -from a reader who has come to believe in the power of light over darkness, unto death. Merci.

Posterity Press hits again!
John Jakes, step aside! Meade's Reprise takes the Civil War Battle of
Gettysburg to a new climax and the Union Army of the Potomac's new commander
to lincolnesque heights. John Merriam has combined historic personalities
with a panoply of fictional characters such as spying slaves and prostitute
nurses to spin an ingenious yarn. What if Meade completely obliterated Lee's forces at Gettysburg? What if, indeed. The answer is detailed, plausible and clever, delivered with a snappy style and enough suspense to keep the pages turning.

Bursting with information!
This book is one of those that rather than elaborate for some thousand pages on just a few gold nuggets, has MANY peices of valuable information, from tuning forks to elements to patterns and more!! This book is done from a semi-scientific approch and the author has done a wonderful job researching! Lots of diagrams and pictures. Very easy to understand and put to practical use.
If You like sound and want to expand it into healing for yourself and others this book could be just what your looking for!

The Mythology of the Wichita
Published in Paperback by Univ of Oklahoma Pr (Trd) (1995)
Authors: George Amos, 1868-1931 Dorsey and Elizabeth A. H. John
Amazon base price: $21.95

A Rich Mythology
The myths of the Wichita are a mythic interpretation of the Place where the present-day city of Wichita stands, but they also are an important link to the world-wide mythologies of ancient times. They both offer an insight into the spiritual meaning of this Place, and have the potential for helping mythographers to understand where Native American myths fit into the larger picture of ancient culture. The ethnographer, Dorsey, has a genuine understanding of the Wichita and of the need to transmit their legends accurately and with a cultural context.

Orwell's London
Published in Hardcover by Schocken Books (1985)
Author: John Thompson
Amazon base price: $14.95
Average review score:

Very useful
It is a shame that this little gem is out of print and so rare or expensive to find. "Orwell's London" is full of photographs of places George Orwell lived, worked and ate in and around London, 115 pictures by my count. They are evenly divided between historical photos of life in London during Orwell's lifetime and ones taken in 1984, when the book was published. The photos are grouped chronologically according to the different phases of Orwell's life and are accompanied by brief biographical sketches that lend context. The final chapter, "No enemy to pleasure", shows restaurants Orwell frequented.

The most useful feature of the book is the addresses given for every place photographed. This is very handy for anyone visiting London who would like to see places where Orwell worked or lived. I made that trip myself in 1999 and can vouch for the accuracy of the references. Of particular interest are the offices of Victor Gollancz, 14 Henrietta St., WC2 (only shown from the inside in this book), Booklover's Corner, South End Green, NW3 (now a pizza shop with an Orwell plaque near the door), and the Senate House, Malet St., WC1 (rumored to be the model for the Ministry of Truth in "1984").

All in all worthwhile, snap this one up if you can find it.
