In an earlier review, I called Robert Sabuda a genius. Now I see that that description undervalues him! This book is one of the finest Pop-Up books you will ever read. Sabuda has distilled the story down into its most distinctive scenes, and used some of the most startling and imaginative paper-engineering to bring this magical tale to life. The book kicks off with a real spinning tornado and continues with pages that will have you saying, "Wow!", even if you're alone. The penultimate page is a jaw-dropper!

If you're used to pop-up books with "Pull Here" tabs, then you may be a little disappointed. You enjoy Sabuda's skill with your eyes - his creations explode into life from the flat pages into works of art. Even more astonishing is the fact that he's still found a way of telling this classic tale with words too - the way he's combined the "mini-pages" of text with "mini pop-ups" is truly revolutionary.

It is absolutely captivating, with pop-ups like you've never seen before! The artistry involved in bringing this much loved story to life has impressed everyone we've shown it to.... adults included, many of whom have asked for the details to order their own copies. A word of warning - this book is SO lovely that it's not the kind of thing you'll leave the kids to play with unsupervised!

Also worth noting that the text is a condensed version of the original L Frank Baum story - not the MGM movie version, and this makes it even more exciting for kids who have only seen the movie. Buy this book. Even if you don't have kids - our 3 girls just love it, and so do I!

I first learned about Alex Deford in the ABC made-for-tv movie, and was immediately touched. Having always been a fan of Frank Deford's sports writing, I knew this book could be nothing less than sensational. And I was correct.

Alex Deford was a strong little girl that was stricken with a terrible disease, and eventually taken from this earth way too early. In this book, Deford recalls her inspiring story, as well as giving us a look into his own life. He is straightforward and ultimately candid about the trials and pains that young Alex had to endure. Through her remarkable story, we learn a great deal about her, and it forces us to look upon each of our own inner strengths.

The book flows really well, and Deford does an incredible job of mingling his own story into Alex's. I really enjoyed the way he included other children's letters and personal thoughts, and not correcting their spelling was a great touch.

This book was a joy to read. I thank Mr. Deford for opening my eyes to this horrible disease, and just allowing me to get to know Alex Deford and what she was all about. It was a true pleasure, and I urge all of you to please read this wonderful book.

This book is so poignient, I must have cried at each and every chapter. Frank DeFord does a beautiful job paying tribute to his late daughter and conveying the struggle that cystic fibrosis put his family through. Along with explaining all of the technical aspects of the disease, he really opens up and tells readers exactly what it is like to have and live with a dying child. Throughout his book, I almost felt as though I were right there next to him, sharing his grief and anguish over his charming daughter's illness. This book reaffirmed my belief that childhood diseases must be cured - Alex was a special child who would have grown and done marvelous things in her life had she not been born with a deadly genetic disease. In my opinion, Frank DeFord's book is the finest ever written on cystic fibrosis.

The first time I've read this book I was in the 5th grade. I absolutely adore this book. Alex with such courage and purity was the kindest of kindred spirits. She will always have a place in my heart. I look foward to meeting her in heaven. Alex will always be my hero. I feel for the family but I feel mostly sad for Chris. Like Alex understood he would be all alone without a brother or a sister. For the person who wrote a review on Feb.7 1999 you can get Alex's story from the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation webpage under publications. For all of you out there read the book it will definitely change your life. Thank you Mr. Deford for writing about your courageous little girl. And theank you Alex for just being you.

Frank McCourt's "Angela's Ashes" was a tremendous inside look at a childhood filled with tragedy and its overcoming, in this book he chronicles the greatest single tragedy in the FDNY's history - 343 firemen killed in the line-of-duty during the attacks on New York's World Trade Centers.

The prose is poetic and the pictures are poignant. It is a well crafted tribute to all those who made sacrifices on that day and during the grim days directly after 9/11/01.

I've been a NYC firefighter for over sixteen years (I work in the South Bronx) and the Fire Department is indeed and hopefully always will be a BROTHERHOOD. Firemen routinely refer to each other as "Brothers," as in "brother firemen." If that offends some people that offense is misplaced. There are currently less than thirty active female firefighters in the 10,000 member FDNY. There were no women who responded to the World Trade Centers on the eleventh. That's why there were no female firefighters among the 343 killed...and thank God.

The Fire Service is not a job conducive to the vast majority of women. The job is not just filthy, brutal and dangerous, but given the wide gap in upper body strength between men and women, only a handful of women are up to the rigors of the job. Those women who do get into the FDNY must be prepared to join the "Brotherhood."

Still, the point is that the title here is entirely appropriate, especially in light of those who made the supreme sacrifice that day. This is an excellent book and one well worth reading, especially for those who didn't get a first-hand look at Ground Zero.

This book was an amazing coffee table book that for some reason I was drawn to. I meandered through bookstores looking for a book that would capture all the emotions I felt on Sept 11. In the end, I was always drawn back to this book but did not purchase it at first because I could not read through it without becoming overwhelmed with emotions. If a picture tells a thousand words then this book will leave you speechless.

I have purchased just three books on Sept 11, 2001 and this, by far is the most moving tribute to the brave men who gave their lives in the hopes of saving others. The names scrolled along the bottom of the pages create a constant reminder of the heros who stared death in the face and forged ahead. The pictures are tasteful and center on the brotherhood that was so mortally wounded on that fateful day, rather than on the actual photo's of the event. The only thing I would have liked to have seen was descriptions of where the pictured firehouses are located. All in all, one of the finest tributes to a so easily forgotten about (until you need them) group of people!

Ben has touched my soul with this book. In the chapter on "Reality Checks," he shared the story of my friend, Ed Sample. If you read nothing else, read this chapter. It will help you put things in perspective just as it helped me. Thanks, Ben, for a great book.

I came across Ben Gill as a TEC speaker a number of years ago. He started speaking to TEC groups to share his experience as a founding owner of a Company: how he did it, lessons learned along the way, mistakes made, etc.

Gill is a compelling speaker with down-home charm coupled with pragmatic advice and practical insights. I don't even hold it against him that he is from Dallas. His Company, RSI, became one of the most successful and largest religious fund raising firms in the country. Gill, I believe, literally founded the fund raising industry.

The book is a compilation of anecdotal stories. Each chapter is a story, followed by his insights, followed by questions for the reader to consider. The book is engaging, funny, poignant, touching, gritty, visceral, and philosophical. While it is almost 300 pages, it is any easy read. I found once I started it, I could not put it down.

The Message

While the book offers no theoretical premise, each chapter builds on an experience to build a "plank" into Gill's platform of how to run and grow a successful Company. Each chapter "story" can be a "stand alone module." In fact, it struck me that you could read the book of 30+ chapters in random order, without missing any of the message.

The book is waiting for the business gurus to distill Gill's wisdom into a theoretical premise on the principles of building a great enterprise.

Many of the themes are common to what we have heard in our Group and from our speakers. A few of these include:

1.Absolute integrity of the leadership: sharing the good and the bad news, admitting your mistakes, walking your talk. 2.Attracting the best and the brightest: smart, highly motivated, decisive. Talent is the ultimate differentiation of company performance, in Gill's assessment. But, the best and brightest have to be able to work in a cooperative team environment. 3. The critical role that coaching and mentoring make early in the career of a person. 4.People who are very successful have a higher calling: it's more than about money, it's about making a difference. 5.If you are not a life long learner, then you are dead(and may not know it.)

All in all, this book is well worth reading. In order to get the most from it, it does require you to spend some time with his questions at the end of each chapter. Therefore, I recommend that you read it twice: once straight through as an easy read, and note the chapters of particular significance for yourself. Then, go back and re-read the short list of highest relevance chapters for yourself, working the questions posed at the end of each.

For me, personally, the most compelling chapter is Chapter 16, called "Having Enough." The question posed is "what do you stand for?"(what do you represent). I struggled with that question for a long time. About a decade I evolved to my answer: making a difference every day in people's lives. How? By teaching people to fish.

I read the review written by the CEO who gave this book to his top clients. Then I ordered the book and understood why. Any business person will receive great "take home" value from Gill's book. I have ordered copies for my top clients (about 100) and asked that Gill personalize them. To my surprise he agreeded. Now I see why he was able to grow a great company and I look forward to putting his lessons in practice in my company as well. This one is so filled with great, yet simple to implement, business ideas that it is hard to believe. My word to Gill - write another one fast!

The Kindly Ones is the climax of the series. I'm not going to talk about that part of the story. It's too huge, too--agh! You'll have to find out for yourself. This, the climax, is, of course, the most important thing in the storyline, but if I try to put words on the feeling it gives me I will miserably fail. Instead, I'm going to talk about the little reasons besides that main reason which, for me, make The Kindly Ones the best.

1) The Corinthian is in it: my favorite Sandman character second only to Dream himself. I can't quite say why, but I just love this character. Since The Doll's House I've found him absolutely fascinating, a creation of genius. And when he came back in Brief Lives, I practically jumped for joy. Unfortunately, that was only about three pages plus one panel. But now he's back again, and--yes! --He's a major character! And he's way more interesting in The Kindly Ones than he was in The Doll's House--this is a new Corinthian. Yes!

2) Delirium is in it, my second favorite of the Endless. She always brightens up a story; luckily, she doesn't steal the attention from Dream in this storyline, as she did in Brief Lives (although that was the right thing for that story, and not a drawback). Here, she's searching for her doggie and following her fish.

3) Thessaly's back! Dream's mystery lover from Brief Lives, last seen in A Game of You. I adore this character. (I also like her name very much, as you can tell since I stole it for my handle.) I always found her one of the most intriguing characters in the series, and I still wish I knew more about her...This is one of the great things about Sandman. Everyone finds their own favorite things to hook onto, a favorite issue, favorite character, that might not mean much to someone else, but somehow is really fascinating to you. Some people love Death or Nuala or Hob Gadling or Mervyn; for me, it's The Corinthian and Thessaly, and I love Brief Lives 3 and 9, A Game of You part 3 and 5, Season of Mists Epilogue, and Ramadan, to name a few. (Not to mention all of The Kindly Ones.) And you, no doubt, have your own favorites, or will have, once you read the series. If you haven't, WHAT ARE YOU WAITING FOR?

One other reason why The Kindly Ones is the greatest: Marc Hempel's art. Some people hate it. I love it. I love the way he's managed to capture the look and expression of all the old characters while doing it in such a different, simplified style. I'm really glad that this crucial volume of Sandman was illustrated by someone with such talent, such a particular mood to his work.

I really can't express what _The Kindly Ones_ is in this brief review; read Sandman for yourself and find out. (I can't stress this enough. Read Sandman. Now. If you want me to tell you again, e-mail me and I will rant on and on about it.) However, being the ninth of ten volumes, this is NOT the place to start--go to Preludes and Nocturnes (Book 1) or The Doll's House (2) for that.

This book tells the story of Dream's death. Dream fights his fate, but almost absent-mindedly. He seems resigned to watch that which he knows he could change. This is where his fatal flaw is revealed--his sense of responsibility. Had Desire had this happen to him/her, she would have done everything in her power to stop it. Yet Dream barely wants to, and in the end gives in to the Furies. This book is beautiful, and I have read it perhaps 5 times. Each time something new pops up, something unseen. It is subtle, and it shows the dire consequences of accepting one's fate without action. This is Gaiman at his personal best in the series.

This book is perhaps the most engrossing book I've ever read, with the possible exception of the Gaiman/McKean MASTERPIECE, Mr. Punch. This was the 2nd Sandman book I read, though I have since completed the series, and trust me, though it's amazing on its own, once you recognize the themes and motifs that have been continued throughout the series (The triple Goddess/Kindly Ones theme has been in every single Sandman collection; look it up if you don't believe me.) as well as the insights into the motivations of all the characters, this is nothing short of a masterpeice. I can't possibly say enough good things about this book, or the entire series. Added bonus: for the first time, the art is ALMOST equal to the story. Don't get me wrong, Jill Thomson, Shaun McManus, Mike Dirginberg, etc, did some great work, but up until now that kind of "comic book-y" style has dominated the series, whereas Mark Hempel's smooth lines and more abstract, angular style compliment Gaiman's writing much better, to my mind. Overall, this is, I'll say it again, an AMAZING book. Buy it. Please. For your own sake.

An intimate telling of family and loss, courage and humor, honest confrontations with mortality, a deeply spiritual tone, and chapter titles introducing us to over thirty different birds, this beautifully descriptive and authentic tale leaves us with tears and a search for binoculars and a bird guidebook. Terry Tempest Williams weaves with great detail the heart breaking and life affirming events of the simultaneous devastation of her mother's body and the migratory bird sanctuary that has been her refuge. She skillfully keeps from dramatizing this innately powerful story. Williams had me deeply attached to pages I knew would be increasingly painful to read. Yet, as it became more painful, I would never describe it as depressing. I am struck by the powerful way she honors her mother, their family's reverent yet human journey through a particularly virulent cancer, and the ultimate power of nature, and equally important, humanity's thoughtless interference with nature, to turn one's life into a personal desert that used to be called home. She is a master storyteller and a poweful activist. This must read challenges the reader to enter a world where solutions are not simple, and life is exposed at its most vulnerable while courage and passion abound.

As the Great Salt Lake rose to submerge and destroy the Bear River Migratory Bird Refuge, grief rose and submerged Terry Tempest William's spirit with the destruction of her mother and grandmother by cancer. The gradual regeneration of the Refuge with the subsiding of the lake parallels the regeneration of her spirit and the subsiding of her grief. But the pain and the scars remain and transform. Terry is no longer an accepting trusting Mormon daughter but a searching questioning activist after her tumultuous emotional experience. One wonders if the gifts of awareness and sensitivity are worth the price of the pain endured. The Refuge becomes a sanctuary for the returning birds and Terry's returning spirit. No more moving piece has been written about the folly and ultimate tragedy of human intervention in the environment. From the nuclear testing of the 1950s to the manipulation of the level of the Great Salt Lake, there is much to learn about the long term consquences of our short sighted acts. Everyone should read and reread and pass on this book.

Now that I have read Terry Tempest Williams' excellent book on finding refuge in the areas around the Great Salt Lake, I find I want to visit, to see for myself the stunning landscape and myriad of birdlife. I also find myself drawn to this courageous woman who lets us into this difficult part of her life, as her mother passes into the shadow of cancer. Not for the first time, we learn, and not such a rare occurrence in her family, we discover; a discovery that, for me, evoked anger at the unfairness of exposing human beings to atomic bomb test fallout. There is so much in this book: the detailed descriptions of the birds and their habits, the extraordinary unfolding of the progression of cancer and its effect on the family, the interplay of three women -- grandmother, mother, daughter -- and through it all, the gentle and exquisite writing carried me nearly effortlessly, yet with great strength. I can find no fault with the writing, the evocative images, the revelation of relationships, and the treatment of this undoubtedly amazing place. Thank you, Terry, for writing this book.

Very funny book, frank gives his views on music, beer, rock journalism, televangelists, his own politics('practical conservatism'). You have the biographical stuff when he was a kid, which is very funny (especially the explosives stuff). You then get a history of the original mothers, the freak scene and that stuff. There's a hilarious chapter on frank's dirty lyrics (drool brittania) with some priceless quotes from a court case. Frank talks about his kids a bit, and what he likes to eat. There's some interesting stuff on music,orchestra problems, and music technology. Then Frank talks about more political stuff in the last third of the book. This is hit and miss, alot of this is stuff which was current at the time of writing but it hasn't aged well. (And it isn't that interesting in any case). The pmrc stuff is good, also the televangelism. Non zappa fans can read this and enjoy it, and fz fans definitely need to read this!! Thank you

i had to read "the real frank zappa book" for school, but it certainly wasnt an inconvience. i grew up on frank zappa, having a father as a zappa nut. so i had an inkling of an idea as to what he was all about. a great look into zappa's life, although my dad tells me there is some controversy as to what is true, even in an autobiography. i suppose it's hard to find a credible source on such a wild guy, eh? but anyhow...an extremely good book. quite a jolly laugh, too...

Working at a library has almost no perks. I shelve the travel section so there isn't much stimulation in the way of brain waves(then again, my job is pretty tedious to begin with). However, one day while wondering through a friend's section I found a gem. I found The Real Frank Zappa Book. When their were breaks in my work, I would grab this book and read it feverously. Even with my increasing respect and love for Zappa's work, I still found this a great book. It packs a sharp wit, biting comentary, and overal, is just a good quick read.

The book covers Zappa's origin, his early musical influences, the tough times of M.O.I.(Mothers of Invention), insight as to his musical creation process, and even a indepth look into his battle with the well-known PMRC. The great thing is even with all this retrospect, the man never loses his sense of humor. Sometimes slapstick, sometimes satire, always truthful.

Anyone interested in the man that was Zappa, I highly recommend this book. Those who are interested in becoming a musician, I also recomend this book(his musical insight is very inspiring). In fact, I recomend this book to all. Its just a shame he died before his time. Zappa was a true inovator of music. There will never be another Frank Zappa.

I bought this book for strategies but what I found was that after I read it I had had such a great time that I immediately read it again. Scoblete is a dynamite writer and this book is a masterpiece. It gives you great strategies for playing the casino's games but it also delves into the mind of the gambler like no book of this type has ever done before. His chapter called "A Day in the Life of a Guerrilla Gambler" is worth the price of the book alone. I think that anyone who reads this will agree that the book is special and is one of the handful of truly memorable gambling books published in this century.

Frank Scoblete is the best known and most honored of today's gambling writers. He understands all the games,has a firm grasp of the math behind the casinos' edges and thoroughly understands the proper strategies to employ for each and every casino game. This book should be the first gambling book you read as it explains in detail how the games are played, then goes into how the casino achieves its edge, and, finally, how to employ the correct strategy to either reduce that edge or get the edge for the player.

Since this book covers every game, you might want to pursue other reading when you are done with it. I would recommend that blackjack players get Scoblete's "Best Blackjack" and "Knockout Blackjack" by Fuchs and Vancura; roulette players should get Scoblete's "Spin Roulette Gold"; Caribbean Stud, Three Card Poker and Let It Ride players would do well with Scoblete's excellent book "Bold Card Play"; slot players must read "Break the One-Armed Bandits" by Scoblete and "The Slot Answer Book" by John Growchowski; video poker players should get Scoblete's "Victory at Video Poker"; baccarat players will love Scoblete's "Baccarat Battle Book" and John May's "Baccarat for the Clueless." Craps players must read Scoblete's craps trilogy: "Beat the Craps Out of the Casinos," "The Captain's Craps Revolution," and "Forever Craps."

I have in my library over fifty gambling books. I believe that "Guerrilla Gambling" is the best book ever written on the subject of casino games. However, Scoblete's followup books on individual games are often the best book in their individual categories with few exceptions.

If you have never read a casino games book but you want a firm grounding in the games, Scoblete is the author to read. He is first rate and deserves his position at the top of the gambling hierarchy.

I usually don't like books that cover all the casino games in one volume, so I hesitated to read this one although I like Frank Scoblete's writing. Boy, was I wrong! This book offers some of the best information I have ever read in a gambling book. Scoblete not only tells you how to play dozens of the most popular games in the casino, he also explains what your psychology should be when you play them. The last chapter of the book, called "A Day in the Life of a Guerrilla Gambler," is wonderful and would make a great movie. Scoblete honestly explores what it is like to gamble in a casino -- he makes you live it with him. I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in casino gambling! Order it today.

I love the New King James Version, put out by Thomas Nelson, but I loath Thomas Nelson Bibles. This is how I happened upon the Thompson a few years ago as I was relieved to find a NKJV not made by T.N. I first bought an NKJV in bonded leather. After 2 years of very heavy use, I bought an NKJV in genuine leather, and later a handy size KJV in genuine. All three of these Bibles are wonderful in every way.

The Thompson Study system is very helpful and they've graciously spared us from a myriad of religious cliche and personal opinion. The page layout is smart. The Bible text actually fills the page and all study helps and references are relegated to the side margins. There are so many ways to use the studies and references, I am unable to number them here. The concordance is as extensive as any I've seen. The 14 maps are colorful and very well done. Simply put, it's a complete, Jesus-exalting study Bible designed with excellence.

The construction of these Bibles is equally impressive. The paper is just right--not too thick, not too thin. The print is dark and sharp. Their font is subtil and very appropriate for the Bible, if you ask me. The red words of Jesus are RED. They're not muddy brown; they're not pink; they're bright, deep, beautiful red. They are printed consistantly page to page, not some pages lighter or misprinted, as the Thomas Nelson folks are plagued by.

Now that I own three Thompsons, I feel about them the way a good ol' boy down in the South feels about shotguns. "I have more than I need, but not as many as I want!"

I spent about 2 hours browsing this thing in a bookstore today and it is incredible. Full of historical facts, bibliograpies, topical idex, charts, timelines, background on the books and the authors, explanations of archeological sites and finds (and photographs), an amazing concordance, etc., etc., etc.....

What makes this edition most unique is its chain reference system. If you're the type who will take the time to flip a few pages to find the depth of a passage, this is for you. It gives other scriptural refences to things you might never have thought to put together. It will give you a very complete sense of the overall biblical context of a verse. It pulls easily overlooked concepts from verses and gets to the heart of matters beautifully.

This bible is known for its quality binding. It advertises its specific binding process and gives instructions on how to take care of it. I tear up bibles, but I would be comfortable knowing that this one will last for a long, long time.

It's not *huge* in size (especially for all that's crammed in there!), but it is a study bible and bulkier than your standard reference bible. I would not recommend this for those who aren't specifically willing to take the time and the effort to dig as deep as possible into the context of God's word. But if that's your purpose, go to it and God bless!

For many years, I searched for the "ultimate" Bible. Being an avid New King James Version reader, we don't always have as many resources available as the King James or NIV people. My most useful Bible study tool is many, many cross-references, which I always looked for in NKJV Bibles that had the most. The Thompson Chain has much more than the standard cross-references. The chain references are just that: you go to the alphabetical index to find your subject, (which there are listed around 4,400 different topics) and you go to the first reference, and simply chain through the scripture references. In other words, they are cross-referenced in sequence order! The topics are as detailed as "blue" and as extensive as "God"; these more extensive subjects are then broken down into various sub- topics. Also, in the back of the Bible, the subjects are listed by title, then all the references are given, and the more main ones are chained throughout the scriptures, and some topics' scriptures are written out in the back also! There are also absolutely no commentaries, nor any conclusions drawn in this Bible! I would 100% recommend this Bible (in any version you use) for those of us who love many, many cross references, and believe first and foremost to compare scripture with scripture (1Cor. 2:13) in Bible studies. For those who like this, this Bible has everything!

And I have. Frank used to run a tutorials site which contained a large portion of the content of this book FOR FREE. Many of the techniques for character modeling were outdated years before this book was even published. The section on special effects using spheres is especially disheartening, since trueSpace has had many plugins available for some time that were created for particle effects and other special effects. This is a decent book for a beginner, but to REALLY get to know the program, and if you can get a hold of it, pick up Peter Plantecs' trueSpace2 Bible. Since most of the features in trueSpace2 are in trueSpace 4, you can get that book cheaper and it's written MUCH better, and many of the tutorials in Inside trueSpace4 were written FOR trueSpace 2, you'd be better off

Well, I got to say this is quite an amazing book. My first book I ever purchased! (let alone, off the internet). When I first got started reading this book, and following the tutorials, I didnt really like it, it was much to broad, could have been a little more detail, but after you pick up the basics, you understand why he dosent go into detail. If you get this book, make sure you know the basics of trueSpace. Other than that, the cd was helpful (even though all the demos). Yes I recommend this book if you are a beginner, but not that you never read the user manual. trueSpace is amazing, I have aquired much skill from this book and it was worth my money in the longrun.

I read a many books about modeling and animating with Truespace and this book is tops in my book. The Author uses clear and easy to understand language. It has many tutorials that take you step by step to high end animating and modeling. It even gives you tips on planning. The only advise i can give to you about this book is BUY IT.
