Teaching the Diary of Ann Frank: An In-Depth Resource for Learning About the Holocaust Through the Writings of Anne Frank

Good but could have been better
This handbook covers more in deopth material on the holocaust than on Anne and her family. This is not necessarily a bad thing because there are tons of books out there on the diary. However, if you are looking for a one stop companion to the diary, this isn't it. You should also be aware that the book is based upon the original Diary of a Young Girl, so the readings don't match and the length of the readings goes from 40-60 pages in the first four to just under 100 pages in the last two. If you use the new diary -- and you should -- then you may want to adjust the readiing assignments. What I did was split the last two in half so there are 8 readings instead of 6. Overall it's well worth the cost, though, because of the supplementary materials. Oh, and most of it's reproducable so that's a huge plus as well!

Outstanding book
I taught the literature of the Holocaust to high school students for 13 years, and I never found a book I valued more as a teaching aid than Susan Moger's Teaching the Diary of Anne Frank. As anyone trying to teach Holocaust literature knows, it is important that students understand how and why the Holocaust occurred as they delve into the literature. Moger's book not only provides the resource material, but it does so succinctly, comprehensively, and creatively. I never taught Anne Frank's diary itself - that was done in our middle school, but I used Moger's book daily to engage students in not only the history of the time, but in the emotional and ethical issues as well. It's no wonder this text won the 1999 Ed Press Award. Soon after I got my first copy, I bought 7 more and gave them to every middle or high school English teacher I knew who was confronting the enormity of teaching the Holocaust. Even though I retired last year, I still get calls from teachers thanking me for this text.

Award Winner 1999 Association of Educational Publishers
As the author of Teaching the Diary of Anne Frank, I am very proud that my book won a Distinguished Achievement Award from the Association of Educational Publishers in 1999.

Unique approach to romance in relationships
I wasn't sure what to expect when I first picked up Romance Recipes for the Soul, but I'm glad I did. It's a cute concept -- entertaining stories about interesting dates with a sort of cookbook theme if you want to try the dates yourselves. The stories were well written vignettes. I like that they ran the gamut of relationships from people wanting to get to know each other to long time married couples wanting to kindle new sparks. I'm looking forward to trying a few of these out with my boyfriend.

Put romance back into your dates
If you are looking for clever ways to impress a date, this book can be your guide to creating a romantic moment to remember!

Somewhat Interesting
Basically this book portrays a biography of a girl that lived in the World War. At first, I thought it was interesting to read about the situation of the Jewish people. Although, Ana Frank depicts every inch of what she sees in a very descriptive manner (considering the age that she had), I expected more contents in regards of the Hollocaust, what happened politically, the war. Ana Frank just described how she feels in all the book about the war. Well, I am not interested in that, although I do admire her because she was calm in despite of what was happening. Afterwards, I did not finish the book and I do not intend to finish it. Instead, I would use the time to read maybe a history book about an autobiography of somebody who lived in a concentration camp. (Maybe that happened after the half of the book, but anyhow)

Diario de Ana Frank by Anne Frank
Excellent book. I teach mostly Hispanic students. We read the English and Spanish version simultaneously. It really helped them understand. I always tell them it only takes one person to change the world, even a little 14 year old German girl. Now they understand.Well written, clearly translated.

Very well written
I thought that this book was very good. Ana (Anne) Frank expresses how she feels and copes with living in the "Secret Annex". It was amazing how she didnt't lose her mind from being stuck in a room all day and not being able to move or make a sound. She confesses every thing in this diary, and is trully a terrific, great book.

What do people see in this story?
I have only one thing to say about this story...I thought it was plain STUPID! What is it with people's obsession's with Anne Frank anyway? Her diary is one of the most BORING stories I have ever read. There is nothing appealing about Anne's story. She focuses only on herself and barely explains any of the characters. Overall, this was an AWFUL book and Anne had no impact on me whatsoever.

A classic work
I have read this book many times, and each time I do so, I am struck that Anne began writing this when she was only 13-years-old. It is as fresh today as it was when I read it the first time about 30 years ago.

I am always struck by those who use Anne's quote about people really being good at heart. . . According to Anne's friend, Lies Gosslar, Anne certainly didn't think people were good at heart after being imprisoned at Aushwitz and Bergen-Belsen. Trying to put a happy face on the Holocaust or give it a positive spin is really more than I can stomach.

sad but uplifting
This is one of the most depressing and yet uplifting stories of all time. I just finished a production of the play and I know that there wasn't a dry eye in the audience at curtain call. Anne's statement that "in spite of everything, people really are good at heart" shows that even close to death, love and hope survive. It's a story that everyone should read; it teaches a lot about life.

There are better books on the market
Although I believe Lynne Franks has good insight for people who want to start their own business, I found it annoying the way that she would name drop and take credit for the success of others. If you are looking for an uplifting book that will help you take the next step toward running your own business, I would recommend, "Building a Business the Buddhist Way : A Practitioner's Guidebook" by Geri Larkin. This book provides the inspiration to take the next step and more practical advise on how to write a business plan and get started.

Good for inspiration, not for technical details
If you are thinking about starting your own business, and need encouragement and motivation to take the plunge, and if you are very visual, than this book could be helpful for you. It offers inspirational advice and is extremely well-designed and fun to look at (one of the reasons I bought the book was to put some of the illustrations on my bulletin board). If you are looking for hard-core information about the steps you will need to take to start your own business (i.e. legal and accounting information) this is not the book for you. Other than a list of organizations at the back, this book contains almost no practical information about the logistics of starting a business. Because the author's previous career was in public relations, there is a bit more information in that part of the book. Having said that however, if you get a headache every time you pick up one of those traditional business "how to" books filled with IRS type forms, this might be the book you need to ease you into the process. I find that it gets me in the mood and gives me the courage to tackle the dry practical books. Just be advised that you will need to purchase another book for the technical information. I would have given the book a higher rating, but I found the frequent mentions of the author's personal achievements to be quite irritating.

And then they came for me
I personally loved this show. i am the video operator for a production of this show at the Laguna playhouse and it has been a wonderful expirence. It is a different kind of theater part of the story being told through video interviews with the two main character Ed and Eva. Eva was one of anne's friends and her mother married otto frank after the war. Ed was anne frank's first boyfriend and their story is told through a seires of viedo interview and live reenactment and their expirences . I highly recommend this play.

Anne Frank a Portrait in Courage

Anne Frank: A Portrait in Courage
Anne Frank: A Portrait in Courage written by Ernst Schnabel is a wonderful story about the Holocaust in the view of 42 witnesses that knew Anne. Through Anne Frank's dreams, diary entries, friends, school, across borders, and through much time, the author finally ends at the death of Anne. This book is not a biography on Anne Frank, for she only left a small trail of character behind for people to discover, but it is rather a book on how she lived. Using these 42 testimonies, we find out how hard it was for the Jewish people to live during these terrible times. This book is a delightful experience for anyone who loves children, courage, freedom, or humanity. This book is anything more than a simple child's diary.

another breath taking book for such an intimate topic
This is another book about Anne Frank that I get the chance to read. Although there are many biographies about this wonderful human being, this book is the closest one that can answer the questions that all Anne Frank fan has. I did for many years just read the Diary over and over but I wanted more! This book is definetly more! It tells you more about the relationship she had with her family and the rest of the people in hiding. This is a girl who could hardly see the light coming from her window and the only green thing that she could think about was a huge chestnut outside the Annex. This book describes this little things that she cherished and that she no longer had....her freedom. She didn't either had freedom of speach inside the Annex due to the critics about her attitude. This book develops more information about why Anne acted like she did and why she had an open opinion about everything. It also gives you a bigger idea of why she didn't like her mother and develops more about her childhood around her family and her friends. I hope all readers that enjoy the Anne Frank writings will enjoy this description about her persona. Is a total different thing to read her diary knowing more about her life and early aspirations. ENJOY!

Valuable for all US Charities and Nonprofits
The Internal Revenue Service has made significant changes to regulations affecting nonprofits, shifting responsibility for compliance from the organization itself to the directors, staffs, and major donors as individuals. Most nonprofit board members and executives are only dimly aware of these changes, and fewer still are prepared with the documentation necessary to address issues of conflict of interest, private inurement, and disqualified persons.

One sentence from the book's introduction sums up the need for action: "The most important aspect of this legislation is that it empowers the IRS to impose punishment on individuals who violate the tax code by levying significant excise taxes initially and then more than quadrupling the penalty amount if remedy is not made to the [nonprofit] organization."

The solution, and the purpose of the book, is also summed up in one sentence in the introduction: "The key to protecting these organizations' officers and other interested parties from excise taxes is proper documentation."

The book is 3-ring bound and well-tabbed for easy reference and for copying of template forms and sheets that are included. In addition, the book ships with a companion PC diskette with forms in Microsoft Word 6.0/Word 95 format that should be usable by most current word processing programs.

This book is a valuable resource for nonprofit executives, consultants, attorneys, and others providing organizational development and counseling to nonprofits and charities.

The book does include examples and references to the health care field, but its content is equally applicable to all nonprofits.

The book's Table of Contents is as follows:

1. Overview of the Intermediate Sanctions Law 2. Establishing an Intermediate Sanctions Review Process 3. Disqualified Persons Determination 4. Diagnostic Review for Disqualified Persons 5. Diagnostic Review for Organization Manager Liability 6. Examining Revenue-Sharing Transactions 7. Rebuttable Presumption of Reasonableness

Appendices

-- Intermediate Sanctions Law -- Excerpt from House Ways and Means Committee Report on Taxpayer Bill of Rights 2 -- Intermediate Sanctions Proposed Regulations -- IRS Model Conflicts of Interest Policy

Anne Frank: A Hidden Life
Published in Unknown Binding by Bt Bound (2001)
Author: Mirjam Pressler
Amazon base price: $16.15
Average review score:

Melissa's was better...
Just have to tell you that - I read this first, found it okay. It IS a great and easy read - full of interest, don't get me wrong - but it's just not 'the best.' - for that check out Melissa's biography. It just REALLY puts you there and is amazing with detail!

The hidden psyche of Anne Frank
In this book the author seems to have magical insight into Anne's hidden thoughts and desires. She also interprets one of Anne's passages to mean that Anne was describing her first orgasm during a petting session with Peter. I read all editions available as well as the newly released "missing pages" and I did not draw this same conclusion. She also believes that Peter did not love Anne. How would she know? I did find interesting little known information about the other members in hiding and do trust facts provided by eyewitnesses (Miep Gies for example)But overall I would recommend Melissa Muller's biography over this book. The biography provides a great deal more detailed facts about Anne's life and does offer a new theory as to who betrayed the Franks. Pressler's book is more like a psychoanalysis of Anne Frank's mind than a detailed account of her life.

Biography & Analysis
If you are looking for a book that is straight biography, then this is not the book for you. There is biographical material, of course, but there are better biographies of Anne out there. This is already a very slight book and Pressler has more on her mind than biography. She is also interested in analyzing Anne's life and, in particular, her relationships with the people she knew.

Pressler is an "expert on the life of Anne Frank" so many of her observations clearly come from a solid basis in research. Much of it seems to be coming from the Critical Edition of Anne's Diary and from Miep Gies' book, Anne Frank Remembered. (These are two excellent books I would read before reading this.) Still, for someone who has already formed an idea about Anne some of Pressler's opinions can be disconcerting, particularly when it comes to her analysis of Anne's sexuality.

This does not mean Pressler's opinions are not worthwhile. For someone truly interested in imagining a full picture of a real person, there is a lot of food for thought in this book whether you end up agreeing with Pressler or not. However, this book goes beyond the simple hero-worship in which Anne's memory usually finds itself.

In my fairly wide reading on the subject of Anne's life, this book is unique in its attempt to understand Anne as a real person beyond the character she creates for herself in the Diary. Since this is an impossible task, all attempts are somehow tinged with futility, especially for someone who never knew Anne in life (unlike Gies and van Maarsen, for example). This casts a pall over this book which Pressler, unlike some highly talented biographers, does not quite have the ability to overcome. However, this book could be very important in opening up the field for a future analysis that may be better.
