I loved this book!!
I loved this book, and it is very hard to find a book that I like. This book is probably my favorite book so far, and I am only twelve. I usually like mysteries, but I guess that I like journals too. Also, this book inspired me to write a journal and just wish that it would be as famous as hers. And Anne's dream was to be famous. Now, she is.

A superb collection!
As part of my effort to learn my role as the dentist in the 1955 version of the play at the local junior college, I read some 14 or 15 books by and about Anne Frank and this one capped my study quite nicely. I recommend it as the one to read after "The Definitive Edition" (or the fascinating "Critical Edition", if you're up to that), Willy Lindwer's "The Last Seven Months", Melissa Muller's "Anne Frank: The Biography", Miep Gies' "Anne Frank Remembered", and Eva Schloss' "Eva's Story". It's scholarly, well edited and footnoted, and has a fine bibliography.

A story of courage
Anyone who has read this book or anything else about Anne Frank knows that she was one of the most courageous people to ever have lived. A thirteen-year-old girl who lived out the last two years of her life in hiding but still managed to stay cheerful, even though there were many people around and arguments over little things. Anybody that could spend two years locked in a confined space and not lose their mind is a very brilliant person indeed, and that Anne Frank was. This book tells of Anne Franks life, from her point of view, during the time she and her family, and freinds, lived in 'the secret annex.'

A moving meditation upon an iconic figure
"Dear Anne Frank" is a volume of poems about the young Jewish girl who, after her death during the Nazi Holocaust, became immortalized through the publication of her recovered diary. The author, Marjorie Agosin, is the descendant of European Jews who escaped the Holocaust; Agosin was raised in Chile. This is a bilingual edition, with Agosin's Spanish poems and the English translations on facing pages. Richard Schaaf is the primary translator, with additional translation done by Cola Franzen and Monica Bruno.

The book also includes Agosin's fascinating introductory essay, "Anne Frank or the Landscape Uprooted" (both in Spanish and in English translation). In this essay Agosin draws connections between the Nazi Holocaust and the atrocities committed under certain Latin American dictatorships.

Agosin's poems are somber and lean. Her voice is at times angry, at times compassionate, at times even a little wistful. She explores Anne Frank's role as young woman, as martyr, as writer, and as iconic figure. This is an important volume for those interested in Latin American literature, Holocaust studies, 20th century poetry, or Jewish studies.

Most influential book in my life
This is the most influential book in my life. I am deeply touched by the talent of Anne. You couldn't guess that this diary was writen by a 13 years old girl. The life in the annex was well illustrated. Anne's mind is opened before us by this great diary. However, you couldn't say that this was not writen by a 13 years old girl. The thoughts are what a teenage girls should have. But, very little teenage or even adult can describ his/her feeling and thoughts in such detail. I feel deeply sorry for Anne's suffering. I felt so frighten when I was reading near the end of the diary. I don't want the diary stop there. Why was the annex was discovered??

Delightful and touching charaacters
This book moved me to tears at times -- it tracks two relationships: a young girl in Minnesota and her affair with a dark-skinned musician, and an old couple -- both great characters -- Mattie and Frank, who start out in an old people's home and end up living with the young couple. The writing is excellent, the characters well-drawn. I'd love to see this book as a movie or even a TV series. I give it 5 stars.
